Chisholms are one of Scotland's oldest established and highly respected towing companies ... Specialising in a lot of off road work ... this was done a few years ago... That tanker was on a very narrow track delivering to a remote farm and slipped down a steep bank onto its side.... quite awkward to resrain....bit of a harsh landing but the load had been pumped off....so little risk of it going the other way . It was a long time ago when I started this restoration and because we had so many other things going on and always something more important to do .....And it was put in the waiting room ( so to speak)..... I almost gave up and nearly cut it up at one stage ....I knew the historic importance of this iconic truck so ....persistance prevailed and finally we got it done I have added a photograph which is already posted on this site ....just to demonstrate where we are now ...I shall post some more pics when I have all the finishing touches done ...my Sincere thanks go to Bill Ludwig , Richard Kauff , Billy from Pendell Towing , Kramers Towing , The Autocar Historic Society , and lastly but not least , all the Tow 411 members for their kind comments and encouragement to see the project through.. We are well advanced in the job now, We have had to make both front mud shields out of new 1/8th plate because the originals had gone very rusty and when we took the front end off we discovered quite a lot of accident damage on the drivers side and it had been badly repaired. We ended up making a whole new sub frame assembly, the end of the frame rail was cracked and twisted. Anyway we have now repaired all of that and it is taking shape nicely. I am unsure exactly how the truck got into the UK but i understand it was in the early 90s and it had changed hands a couple of times before I got hold of it....... The English weather had done its work and it was looking a bit sad and quite a few damaged bits and pieces. You are absolutely correct, it is a real handful getting it round corners, But....that's all the fun of it?? KYLE..........Thanks a bunch for turning up that pic it is Coooool. Used holmes 600 & 750 for years and they are still good winching tools. I have a technical question for the group - when winching with a twin boom - do you split the booms and go straight from the masthead? I was always schooled not to winch from the booms in case they are over strained and bent. The reason for this is that it encourages the weight to transfer down through the A frame to the back axles. However i've seen images of fairly heavy duty winches on this site - examples such as 6 wheel tipper in florida buried up to the diff being pulled out by two lines two to one but rigged going out from the ends of the booms - it seemed to go fine but I'm curious what the opinions are to these techniques. Mark...........there are very few Holmes 850 in the UK about three to my knowledge, However, there are quite a few in exsistence Stateside, the power of the 850 is Awesome!!! almost unstoppable if is set up and rigged properly. there are a lot of folk who still swear by them and are reluctant to use anything else. there has been quite a bit of very interesting discussion recently elsewhere in this forum ( I dont know how to post the link) I think it is in "Equipment" somewhere, but cant find it right now. some for the twin booms and some for the big hydraulics, opinion is divided, but well worth the read.Be Safe, Be Lucky. I have been a member of Tow 411 now Towforce for over 13 years ( I think ) and it is without doubt the most informative forum for the towing industry in existence... I have met a lot of very knowledgeable folks and truly very welcoming families and seen many innovative ideas and solutions ...... with the advent of social media some things have changed ( I am not sure for the better !! ) This forum is an excellent learning tool and information exchange and cannot be allowed to founder .... Ed.... that is a nice job throughout ….something to really get your teeth into...and the profit is sweet !! Shame they totalled the 5th wheeler I guess it must have weighed about 12 ….14000 lbs….that looks like another nice big repair job as well we ran our own bodyshop for many years and did a lot of very big work ….sometimes the odd job tried my patience and had the occasional battle with insurance cos over supplementarys but normally if you kept them informed at every move they were ok ... in the UK …..several insurance companies have their own approved repairer network and occasionally we were approached to join the networks guaranteeing large volumes of continuous work and fast track payment ……...but they wanted us to do free tows....free storage.... discount on all parts and paint materials.... and work for a stupidly low labour rate ……..sorry, No Thanks !! we remained independant. This is a tragic incident .... I am not sure who passed away yet ....but that area around Burnham is notorious for vehicles getting stuck on the beach with numerous hidden soft sand pools and very fast incoming tides..... The local towing companies are very experienced and well equipped to deal with these incidents .... Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family , friends and co workers .... John.

Rod....You have a very versatile truck there with a good payload .....The Hiab crane is very popular in Europe and is highly rated, they make the job so much easier. It looks reeeeal cold there ....be safe there... John.

The Tractor unit has a 32 tonne meter crane fitted.... the crane is manufactured by Palfinger in Germany. 4 hydraulic push outs and 3 manual extensions... when fully extended it can put a ton on the tail of the trailer... 4 hydraulic out riggers... Palfinger manufacture some of the best truck loading cranes in Europe, there are several other very good cranes available and we had had several different types in our fleet... The Palfingers are very responsive and the controls precise ... the ones we had were virtually trouble free. A couple of pictures without the trailer. John.

Excellent.....here is a guy who knows how to get the best out of what he has got and the Holmes trees around him.... that looks like a 6 cube drum.... if it was loaded the gross weight would be about 26 tons about 57000 lbs I always worry about pine trees because normally the root mass doesn't go too deep.....by sharing the load off between several reduced the risk of uprooting any. This is a job we did for the Air Investigation Branch a while back.... It was important to preserve as much of the airframe as possible for detailed examination in to the cause of plane going out of control just after take off... After carefully removing the remainder of the wings it was an easy lift onto the trailer. Knuckle booms are very popular in Europe and very versatile.
