  1. UPDATE 04.10.19: Divers Set To Recover Tow Truck, Couple In Sacramento River Friday SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Divers are set to recover the tow truck that plummeted off the Pioneer Bridge into the Sacramento River this Friday. his comes over a week after officials located the truck, but could not safely recover it and the couple presumed to be inside. The truck crashed into the river around 8 p.m. on March 26. CHP South Sacramento said the recovery effort will come from Global Diving and Salvage, with local agencies on the scene. The Bay Area company is expected to leave Thursday morning. According to CHP, the family got power of attorney of Justin’s Towing Wednesday and contracted Global Diving and Salvage to do the recovery through the tow truck company’s insurance. Global Diving and Salvage plans on transporting a barge with the necessary equipment to make a recovery of the vehicle from their Bay Area headquarters tomorrow with the barge arriving sometime in the evening. Officials said the recovery could take up to two days. There is no word on the couple believed to be inside. The family of Shalvinesh and Roselyn Sharma believe their bodies are at the bottom of the Sacramento River, but local crews had not been able safely to locate the truck and couple due to rapid, frigid waters. The water is moving at about four feet per second. Last Monday, a commercial dive team was called in to help with the recovery effort. They used sonar to find the tow truck, pinpointing the location through sound waves. They now believe they have located the truck using sonar technology, but crews have not actually seen or touched the truck. The water was too dangerous for local divers, so Solano County divers came to help on Saturday, but the water was still too dangerous. “Safety is paramount when we’re out here,” said Solano County Sergeant Jackson Harris on Saturday. “We’re not going to cause any further complications by putting our divers into jeopardy.” Police say they believe the truck is halfway across the river and about 39 feet down. Officials say there are two major PG&E pipelines in the water and weather conditions will make the recovery increasingly difficult Resource Link

  3. A couple of members have recently inquired about where the sponsorship funds go. Updating or replacing a desktop or laptop computer is part of those funds generated through the Patron/Sponsor Levels. As System Costs, Marketing, Promotions, Travel and what remains goes towards a salary for maintaining the message board. Yes, I have been compensated for my time. That compensation has been cut in the past couple of years, but like the towing industry we all keep moving forward because we cannot go back. The Tow411 message board was well know for it's time. But times change and as a New Generation enters the industry it is up to us industry veterans to not make way for that New Force. But, to offer them a TowForce of knowledge not found in such abundance any place else. Now I must apologize after months of searching I may have found a new laptop. I just need the funds to purchase it and return this borrowed Macbook. Check it out, I will be adding some reviews. But, as much as I like a Mac they are falling behind the technology. Review: The Huawei Matebook X Pro (2019) is the best laptop I’ve ever used… ever Huawei knocked this one out of the park https://thenextweb.com/plugged/2019/03/19/review-the-huawei-matebook-x-pro-2019-is-the-best-laptop-ive-ever-used-ever/
  4. ‘Largely overlooked’: Report details accelerated death, injury rates among tow-truck workers organtown, WV — Workers in the motor vehicle towing industry face an on-the-job fatality risk nearly 15 times greater than workers in all other industries, according to a recent study from NIOSH. Analyzing data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, NIOSH researchers found that 191 motor vehicle towing workers were killed between 2011 and 2016, resulting in an annual rate of 42.9 deaths per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers. For all other industries, that rate was 2.9 per 100,000 FTEs. Additionally, the annual nonfatal injury rate among motor vehicle towing workers during that same period was 204.2 per 10,000 FTEs – more than double the rate of 98.2 for all industries. Other findings: Motor vehicle incidents were the leading cause of towing industry worker deaths, accounting for 64 percent. Contact with objects and equipment (17 percent) was second. Contact with objects and equipment (34 percent) and overexertion and bodily reaction (32 percent) were the leading causes of nonfatal injuries. Men accounted for 97 percent of the deaths and 94 percent of nonfatal injuries. “Until now, nonfatal injuries and deaths in the motor vehicle towing industry have been largely overlooked,” NIOSH states. “The findings from this study underscore the need for additional research and tailored prevention efforts.” The Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety offers several tips for workers who tow vehicles for roadside assistance. Among them: Survey the area for hazardous conditions, especially near merging lanes or intersections where moving vehicles are nearby. Use sufficient warning lights or pylons around the pickup area. Avoid using flares in case of fuel leaks. Wear high-visibility personal protective clothing. Tow, rather than push, a vehicle whenever possible. Double-check a vehicle after it is rigged. Ensure all cables or connections are secure before driving. RESOURCE LINK

  6. Thanks, matching funds were suppose to end November 15. But the Supporter has extended to offer an additional week. I think we may just make goal by the end of November. Have not had time to get the broken mac on a monitor yet. After Baltimore I will get on that task. Hope to see several of you there.
  7. Back then you felt safe because there were fewer vehicles, fewer distractions, fewer impaired drivers. Well, the fewer impaired drivers had more to do with fewer vehicles and fewer narcotics. If you recall when the strobe lights came out they were great in the urban areas and not so great in the rural areas. Drivers can determine easier where the light is coming from with a mechanical beacon. But they look crappy on a modern truck, Bubble Gum Lights belong on vintage tow trucks. For many years we have had the option of installing strobe type beacons. Now they are becoming common with integrated traffic advisor lights. Most companies are now adding more lower lights with a separate switch to turn off the upper lights which blind traffic and distract from the beacon. Even having strobes on the sides of the bed is possible now though most companies do not invest in the safety these additional lights provide. Even worse companies with road service vehicles often have the least lighting. These type vehicles with one small or half beacon should NEVER be working on the interstate though we see it all the time. Are Road Service Personnel less valued then the Tow Truck Operator. It does not make sense to save money sending out a road service unit (small pickup, van, even a car) and put a budget low cost light on it. Those lights should never be allowed to service other vehicles on roadways above 45 mph. Sorry to once again I strayed from the original topic, but these are my concerns and rants.
  8. Time is ticking down and this effort to raise the funds needed to replace a laptop is falling short. Please Help...
  9. I brought the tow lights into the discussion because it seems a percentage of tow operators substitute the beacons for the tow lights. Then thee are the rollbacks that run the beacons with a vehicle on the bed. No Tow Light Needed... No Beacon Needed yet it is On anyway... My answer is always Boss says when loaded run the beacon.
  10. I have heard a tow truck driver and even a few owners say that a motor club mainly AAA has told them when to run the beacon. But, I find that very difficult to believe and doubt that it is anywhere in writing. You will find that those states that have laws dictating when the beacons should be used, are citing very old laws. The industry has been using wireless light bars for years now. I feel this really falls back on the state associations as they should be in a position to fight to change these laws which are out of date. Often those who wrote the laws are gone and those who enforce them can not explain them.
  11. Not half way to goal, there has to be more members that can support this community with a new Patron or Sponsor Status. The matching funds up to $1000 are being offered thru November 15th. Thank you for your participation on the New Force in the Towing and Recovery Industry. Do not forget to add your Motor Club Ranking to the survey or send it in by mail.
  12. Technically, it is not the screen. it is the connection between the keypad and the screen. The cost of repair could be higher then the value of the unit. At that, I need to clean off the unit before sending it out to be repaired. Thanks
  13. Thanks Don, I'll send out an invoice next week. Working on getting a temp solution together as I don't want to just run out and put a new laptop on charge. We are nearly halfway to our goal thanks to New Patrons and a Sponsor. Only 6 weeks remaining to reach the $1000 matching funds. Oh, I know we should all have a backup plan for our personal laptop. At one time, I had a desktop as well but didn't use it much. Think I will be going back to it more.
  14. Louwo, I am working on doing that, but as stated it defeats the purpose on the laptop and I am on the move much of the time. Thanks John aka mushspeed, hoping to replace the Macbook Pro. But, at worst I go back to a regular PC for awhile. Any help is appreciated, hopefully I start getting invoices out soon. Towing has been very busy as of late. Anyone else busy?
  15. So, I got nearly 3 years out of this one and the screen went out. Time for a new one, problem is I am strapped for cash as I have focused on regenerating the message board. In fact I have devoted so much time to bring the community back from near disaster I have not invoiced Patrons & Sponsors on a timely basis. Making sure the community was back on track has been my main concern. Generating funds to keep it going has taken a back seat. Now, I am forced to ask for help. I have a Supporter that has pledged to match funds up to $1000.00 in order to get a new Macbook Pro. I need to raise these funds in the next 45 days. So, the way that has been done in the past is ask for new Patrons a Sponsors. Being a supporter is not a requirement, those who have chosen to provide such support are recognized by either a Patron or Sponsor Bar under their screen name. I addition they are noted in the sidebar. To join our supporter program visit our store which is still being updated at https://www.towforce.net/subscriptions/ Silver Sponsor Never followed thru Patron III mushspeed TACTOWBOSS Sub Total - $150.00 Total Matched - $300.00 GOAL $2500.00

It was about 4:00 am when I arrived in Gatlinburg with passengers and vehicle at one of the passengers residence. It was a 90 mile tow, and father was thanking me and holding cash asking how much his bill was. I told him it was AAA+ and under the 100 mile coverage and he did not owe any additional charges. He said yes he did and it was worth a lot to get those kids and car home and handed me all the money in his hand. I just put it in my shirt pocket, thanked him and headed home. When I checked my pocket, there were 3 hundred dollar bills, it was the best tip I have ever received. Westlake Towing said: A 50.00 dollar tip, couple from out of town ran over something in the road late at night and ruined a tire. I knew that I didn't have that size in stock and spare was flat, so loaded the car up on the carrier and on the way to the shop stopped at the local Wal-Mart and a manager open the closed auto center and got the tire needed, I had the customer purchase the tire, took the car back to the shop and mounted the new tire repaired the spare and sent them on the way, charged for the time to get the tire, the labor, and the tow, pricey bill once totaled up. They were happy with the service, paid the bill left me with a generous tip and continued their trip. nbacdon said: i got a 10lb lobster for a tow just a few miles down the road. I was shocked been doing this now 4 1/2 years and not once did someone say thank you to me I handed her the money and told her no one has ever said those words to me and I thanked her call me crazy but those words mean a lot when its raining and its 20 degrees outside. Than 2 weeks later a card and yup you guessed it she sent me a card with the money she tried to give me. Till this day I still have that card and she will request me to come tow her car for her. I have had money, food, even toys got a car once for a tip but till this day I remember the first person who said Thank you to me. john fenshaw said: i got a 500.00 tip after recovering a loaded dump that they were able to drive away. he told me because i went the extra mile to not do any damage to his mini wheeler it was well worth it to him. also i got a 300.00 tip for towing and fixxing a motor home on a holiday weekend plus an artical in a hot rod magizine saying what a good service he recieved down south and because of a tower he was able to make his family reunion. but i think the best tips are repeat business!!! We picked up a Gentleman with a Mercedes who we ended up taking into Los Angeles. I usually made it a practice of dropping Her off on the way out of town. I explained to the Gentleman what I was going to do but He insisted it wasn't a bother to Him and we had quite a nice conversation on the way during which time we discussed our pending nuptuals. He asked if we'd made our plans stating that he could marry us. Turned out He was a very high level Federal Judge. I was following His directions where we eventually ended up in Beverly Hills at His residence. He said I could drop his car on the street in front but I said i'd be glad to back it up into his drive so it'd be safer. After I un-hooked He paid me and added a $50.00 Bill to the charge and then said wait... He came out of the House carrying a Magnum of Champagne. He also gave us his business card, confirming what he'd said about the marriage offer. He also was nice enough to send a congratulatory letter to the Boss. The owner owned many high end cars and i have been towing for this shop for 5 years. Its 25 miles from our base. A driver accidently gave me $100 over what i charged him to pull out his T/T which i didnt notice till the morning. so i called him and offered to send it to him. he said just for calling and noticing the mistake to keep it as a tip. last night i pulled out a good customers conversion van that she had slid in between a mail box and a tree. because of the conversion with the ground effects i could not get directly to the frame to pull it side ways. in the process of winching it side ways i snaped off the lower valance. After i said i would take care of it in the morning she gave me a $20 tip. THAT made me feel better. unknown member said: in the late 90's I stoped for a disable after dark. mid to late 30's mother and young kid offered my help. so she used my cell to phone her husband to deside were to go. so she had me tow it to there home 15 miles away gave them a good price.a week later show me a letter he recieve in the mail, it was her thanking me and letting my boss know how helpful I was. that was just the first now I'm pretty good at get compliments. unknown member said: Heard a police call on scanner about 10:30 pm one night, A 36 ft motor home about to roll over embankment into a pond, was not our call but near our rotation area and I was nearby and had some free time so I went over in my pickup to check it out & watch. When I arrived the other operator was having difficulty and almost lost RV a couple of times so I offered my assistance @ no charge of course, he was a young guy and not very experienced, did I mention it was New years eve? poor young fellow was only one working at his company that night and he couldn't call for any help or advice, no one else would answer, so he was happy for the assistance, after 3 hrs we got RV recovered and with no Damage. Owner walked up and asked what he owed I assumed he meant to the other Tower so I told the younger fella to take care of the bill & we could talk some more after, but when the owner asked what he owed me I said no charge and with a big grin. Said it was fun and I couldn't think of a better way to ring in the New Year! He gave me a funny look and handed me a tip and I said as I always do "you don't have to do that" his reply was "I know that but I want to" he had handed me a stack of bills probably all $1 bills, when I got back to my pickup to drive home I looked at it, $620.00!!! I still feel kind of bad but I guess If his RV had rolled into the pond he would have lost more. By the way the other companies bill was only $475.00 And that young fellow well he is older now and manages that company guess who he calls when they need an extra truck or 2! I parked my truck behind him providing him cover from traffic and asked if i can be of service, he asked if i can loosen the bolts for him. took all of 3 mins and the spare was on and he was on his way. He asked how much do i owe you sunny? i told him no charge, I was off the clock and just wanted to go home myself. He hands me a handful of money and drives away. She sent us a $50 gift card to a restaurant we had talked about, t-shirts and even a dog toy for our English Bulldog puppy that had rode with us. This was in addition to a cash tip that she had given the night of the tow and FOP cards that she had given each of us in our name for if we should happen to get pulled over (although I never did get to use mine). I couldn't believe all that she had done, just for something that was normal for us. I ended up sending her a Thank You card back for the care package that was sent. The police spotted the stolen truck and gave chase but the Customer now a Subject wrecked the truck with his vehicle on the back. I assume the vehicle was registered to him, if not that is another issue. Personally, I rarely ever transport anyone and never from an accident scene. Be aware, your not a taxi. Would the police put the majority of these individuals in their front seat. Why are we still doing this when the dangers continue to increase? It's like changing tires on the side of the road. Why?
  20. Brian, nice unit as pictured. Not a fan of international, never have been and likely never will be. So, I would want another chassis manufacturer. Though I know a high percentage of medium duty units out there use the international chassis.
  21. I have received more negative comments from towers who seem to have lost Faith. They point out they are in Fact Atheist, though these are not members here they contacted me through FB Groups I have posted this new poem on. So, I felt this Quote by Charles Krauthammer 1950-2018: “Faith is something that one has or doesn't have; one doesn't construct it. The one thing I do believe is that of all the possible views of God, atheism is the least plausible. The idea that there's no meaning or purpose or origin--that the Universe is as it always was, is to me entirely implausible for reasons of physics, apart from faith. Because if you reason back to first causes, and if you’re an atheist, you get to a logical contradiction.” Agree or Disagree Charles Krauthammer was a well spoken man of much reason who could at least make you think. If you have lost your Faith, the quote above will make you think. For those who testify on a daily basis, the above quote makes you think. If a man such as this can find logic that there has to be more to this life. Then you are a Believer and you have Hope. The poem which started this topic is heartfelt and from the prospective of a long time tower. I get questioned on my time in a wrecker on a constant basis. many do not realize in addition to the numerous hours spent working on this community. The Only Active Message Board in the Towing & Recovery Industry, I am in a Tow Truck more than 50 hours a week. Now to some of you that run 60, 70, 80 hours or more a week that is nothing. However, combine that with another 30 to 40 hours a week maintaining and promoting the Towing Information Network. I will keep working on other poems and maybe one day I will be able to release them. As for quotes, I do not believe I have said anything that has made a significant difference in the industry. When I am gone, I did not do this to be thought of or known as one of the Legends of the Industry. I am simply fine with being a foot soldier for the Lord. There are plenty in the industry now that have the ability to do great things. I only ask that once you have done something, you start on something else. The Greatest didn't just do the one thing they are best know for, it is a combination of many attributes. Once again, I'll be at the wall in September. Will you be there?
