I use SQUARE, and I have for a long time. I have had very little problem with SQUARE. But lately, I have been getting weird messages from them, making reference to people that have contested charges, etc. Nothing ever came out of those claims. And the dollar amounts that they made reference to didn't match any transactions that I have processed. The problem that I have with SQUARE is I can never talk to a person. I got a message from SQUARE today, contesting something. So I clicked on a button to get more information. Then I got a message from Microsoft Outlook, warning me that it is a bad idea to go any further with that site. I don't know what's go…

This Topic was Originally Created in February of 2005 by: Jim at Preferred Towing & Recovery, Inc. Noblesville, IN We have a ghost in our shop. I have never met him before, but I know his name. All of my employees know his name too. I wouldn’t have known his name, but each one of my employees has told me his name at one time or another. Our ghost’s name is Notme. How do I know that his name is Notme? Well I will tell you. Notme is a very mischievous ghost. He makes messes and looses stuff all the time. Just like last week, the shovel off truck 8 was missing. I asked Jon the driver of truck 8 who lost the shovel. “Notme” he said. I can remember abou…

California law requires anyone doing PPI towing to have a working pay phone in the release area or face legal action. I have been looking and looking and can't for the life of me find anything that isn't old, beat up or just plain stupid expensive. What's everybody else doing to meet this requirement of the law? I'm stuck. Also, we use VOIP internet based phones and can't plug a landline phone into them. I am certainly not getting a landline account at all three yards just for the stupid pay phone so what the heck....

I have done my cost per mile to operate the trucks a couple different ways. I am wondering how you guys calculate your insurance cost per mile. I ended up using my insurance cost per year and divided that by the number of miles I run the trucks on an assumption. I would be interested in how you may calculate yours thanks Tracy

Wondering if anyone has sold their abandoned/wrecked vehicles thru IAA or Copart? Usually sell to the local junkyard but he's not been paying much. Looking for the most profitable way to dispose of vehicles. Thanks

With all of the violence and political uncertaintity that exists, here's a laughable topic that comes from the, "Who Cares", file. A car was lawfully impounded by a police agency and was towed by a large, southern California tow company; one with an outstanding reputation. The tow company recently fell under scrutiny when a vehicle's owner WASN'T provided reasonable comfort, or, access to reasonable comfort in vehicle release areas. The complaint was the result of a vehicle owner coming to the place of business and there was no seating for the vehicle owner's pregnant wife as they waited to pick up their vehicle from impound. While I'm pretty famil…

We are looking to deploy credit card machines to the field with our drivers and want to know what you all have and if you like it or not. We have used the cellular machines from the bank without much success; they are either dead battery or out of service area too often. They are also too expensive to deploy with each driver on call ($400 each) I like the Square Deal thing to plug into the iPads we issue to the drivers but don't know much about them. We use Towbook software so if it integrates into that it would be real nice. Please tell me your thoughts. Mark

Topic Originally Created on Tow411 in September of 2005: What are the response times in your ares for Motor Club Tows? I heard last night that the average time to get a motor club tower to respond in my area is running 2 1/2 hours nearing 3 hours. Last year that was 1 hour, 10 years ago 30 minutes. We are now finding members stranded on our roadways for several hours as they wait out assistance. We do what we can for them as far as getting them to a safer location and informing the club. The families are the one you have to feel for as they have come to expect a certain level of service and they have little concept of why that service is not being delive…

We buy Salvage Freight. Got a call from a Tow truck owner. He had recovered a trailer that had serveral skids of popcorn left on it. It was an overage delivery. The owner of the trailer didn't want it. The tow owner wanted to apply what he would get for it to the storage fees of the trailer parked on his lot. We made the purchase, picked it up. Everyone is Happy. If you have any Salvage, abandoned freight, overages etc... Give us a call 434-610-8815

Just for fun ... consider the following incident. Below is a new link of an incident where a van hits a tree in-front of a Michigan residence and literally is cut in two pieces. You arrive in a carrier and are skilled enough to load both pieces. Both pieces need to be strategically positioned on the carrier and tied down. Obvioulsy, the process is lengthy. Keeping in-mind that technically there's only one vehicle, one license plate and one VIN, how would you price this work to include cleanup and total time on scene? R. So tonight, Agero contacted my company and ask if we could do a winch out of a stuck vehicle in the forest. Agero was told that we could use our off road recovery equipment but we charge different rates for this service then the contracted rates with Agero. Agero contacted the customer and let them know our hourly rates and told the customer they would have to pay the difference that Agero wont cover. The customer agreed. We drove 2 1/2 hrs to do this job and the customer knew how long it would take us to get there and even asked us to stop and get them water. We get to the entrance of the Forest and called the customer and found out they called out another off road rec…

from the Blog of Geri Roskopf: I received this in an email from a fellow tow lady and I had to chuckle. Those of you who are dispatchers will certainly know where we’re coming from. No disrespect to the agent from the motor club – we’ve all been there, and you can’t make this stuff up. Motor club: Hi, this is ____ from (motor club), can you help me with a tow from a repair shop to Hwy 1? Me: What is the address on Hwy 1? Motor club: It says US Hwy 1. Me: To quote the call, I will need to know the address where the vehicle is to be taken. Motor club: Well, she said she wanted it taken home. (Keep…

From Geri Roskopf's Blog: I read an article titled “Balancing Act,” which referenced the economic growth in a neighboring county where the goal is to mix new development with the county’s history and agriculture. It’s like a balancing act of having fast-paced growth while not losing what attracted people to the area in the first place. When I saw the article’s title I thought of acrobats, jugglers, tightrope walkers and gymnasts who are all proficient at doing balancing acts as they perform. I also thought of what I do every day at my tow company. I certainly do a balancing act managing employees, customers, vendors, dispatching, book work, fa…

Does anybody have figures relating to how many small tow companies are in America that let's say have a couple trucks and a couple drivers that basically operate 8:00 am - 5:00 pm and after hours owner answers phone and see which one of his guys can do a tow at night or on the weekend versus companies that have 3 manned shifts and dispatchers around the clock?

Just for fun ... consider that ... employees are hard to find and harder to keep. Exceptional employees are few and far between. If your company is lucky enough to employee an exceptional employee, what do you do to reward their actions? R.

A Tow411 Topic which began in 2008: Sara Said: Hi Everyone I'm working on changing the law in Nebraska so that the tow and storage lien includes personal property in towed vehicles. Of course, we would release anything that is medically necessary, children's car seats, keys, purses, etc. From everyone that I have spoken to, the rate that vehicles are picked up has gone up dramatically once they hold personal property for payment of tow and storage fees. I would appreciate any info, from any state about how your laws work. Thanks unknown member said: California, We have no lien on personal property. Must release property to owner. We d…

It could be a Driver, a Dispatcher, A Mechanic etc. How long do you attempt to work on them in hopes of turning them around? At what point has it been too long and is there a dollar on productivity, damages or both that make the decision to send them on their way progress. Is it always dealt with in the same manner and do you consider that manner to be professional or just "You're Fired". Sometimes, we have found that it's just the drama and mental stress. The employee is actually a very good in all other regards. They just can't seem to leave the drama at home and even that they can't control. We have that, gave this guy a chance and the drama at home is effe…

Tow411 Topic Created by Orcas Tow in June of 2006: I am going through a poor period of impounding, seems like lately I am only getting called by the PD for wrecked junkers that are not being claimed, most others have AAA which we are not part of. I am having to eat the tow/disposal, looking for ammo before I walk away from PD impounds all together, what percentage of your PD impounds are unclaimed/unpaid, thanks.Hello from sunny (when its not raining) Orcas Island timjohn said: I would venture to say that 30-40% of the impounds we do go unclaimed. It is one of the reasons we do not do a lot of police towing. Getting rid of junkers is a real…

Art of Dispatching - Advisor Article - Part 2 of 4 by FTI Groups (from 2006) Just wanted to share Part 2 of this article from the Advisor that is currently arriign in member mailboxes. THE ART OF DISPATCHING - Part 2 of 4 MOTIVATION Compliment your driver staff. It will motivate them to perform. Yes, I wrote “your” driver staff. The old adage “if you live by the sword, you will die by the sword” could be rewritten for the dispatcher. The dispatcher’s version would read “if you live by the driver, you will die by the driver”, and believe me, a dispatcher lives by his drivers. In other words, the dispatcher is so dependent on the driver staff for the su…
