My bed was getting slow to come back in, especially with a heavy load, the cylinder had a slight leak at the shaft seal. It was not a drip, just damp all the time. Everything else was working fine so I felt the pump pressure was good. Decided to take the cylinder out and get it rebuilt after talking to my hydraulic guy, he felt it could be bypassing internally. We thought about testing the pressure but with the cylinder leaking anyway I decided to start there. I had decided to change the pressure line while I had it out. When I removed the line from the control valve I got a small piece of rubber like material come out in my hand. The cylinder was not bypassing but…

I moved this from the TowCanada bit. It seems to be mostly populated by a couple bots. I own a heavy truck and trailer shop, I’ve been thinking about a wrecker as a service truck, to move semi trailers and dead trucks into the shop to be worked on and to occasionally take a truck we can’t fix to dealerships. What’s the minimum wheel lift needed to move empty semi trailers, dead straight trucks and power units with the occasional couple hour haul on the highway? What do you need to know to recommend a spec for a tow truck? Are used wheel lifts available at wrecking yards to build a service body around? thanks

Has anyone used a cable swager tool? I found this on E rigging's website. Tyler Tool 36" Hand Swager. According to the specs I read, the aluminum swages have a 90% capacity rating. I have a couple of cables that had gotten crushed on my drum but I have enough to make up some shorter cables that I can use. I would rather use a swag over regular cable clamps. Any thoughts?? Thanks

Need to put another cable on my rollback, I got another kink in the cable. This is the third one on a year. I use 3/8 steel now but the the first one was fiber core and that one got a kink as well. I am starting to think I am doing something wrong but don't know what. I know a cable has a twist in it, either right hand or left hand, but I don't see how that would affect the way it winds on the drum. The tensioners were replaced after the first cable kinked. They are tight against the cable even when the cable is slack. When I install the cable, I attach it to a car and pull the car up a slight grade to keep tension on it as I wind …

Anybody still have one of these Indy jib booms taking up space in the shop? Maybe laying out back but not too rusty from 20 years ago? This would fit a NoMar 810 or 1010 wrecker. Have cash, thanks for looking. https://tow.photos/images/2020/12/26/imsc0144.jpg

Guys Had a call a couple weeks ago for a 4wd pick up with the front end tore up and missing wheels. I carry skates but I got the impression this one was gonna be a pain to load on the bed and get back off. I had replaced the floors in my snowmobile trailer a while back and I had a couples of pieces of the ski runner protectors left and happened to look at them and the light went off. They are about 10 inched wide, thin but strong and slippery as hell. They worked great, I had a couple of short pieces and some full lengths. I am going to cut the full length ones down to about two feet and carry 10-12 inch pieces. They will come in useful and tak…

Looking for everyone's thoughts and opinions on the most reliable and brightest led lightbar for my carrier. Pylon is mounted to the deck so I need to have a standard wiring cable can't have a serial cable. Looking for something that has the cruise light option and fully loaded with led heads. Seems like a lot of manufacturer's are going away from the cruise light option.

Any downside to the larger tire wheel dollies ? Clearance problems on low cars etc. ? I like the extra capacity, less bearing speed and less tire revolutions per mile, but not if the larger size is an issue on some vehicles.

So I am looking at getting light duty (under 26,000 pound) rolloff. Mostly going to be using it for picking up cars to and from auctions and picking up disabled, not necessarily crashed vehicles. Have mostly narrowed it down to International 4700 series with the DT466E and a 6 or 7 speed. Looked at some Freightliners and Ford 600-800 series with the 5.9 cummins but I am guessing that they would be underpowered, under load while trying to maintain the high Texas highway speeds. Do not get me wrong, I like the cummins and own two of them in pickup trucks. I see a variety of bed lengths from 19 to 25 feet. It seems to me that 19 feet is more than enough for most …

I’ve been kicking around the idea of buying a F550 rollback with the new 7.3 gas. It’s main purpose would be towing cars and light trucks under 8000 pounds. Does anyone ever regret buying a small truck? Or does anybody have experience with the 7.3 gas yet. thanks!

I am looking at upgrading my heavy wrecker have a Holmes 750 that i learned on and I've always been able to get the job done but as i get older something less labor intensive sounds good. Looking at probably 45t or bigger but there are a few 35t that has me interested. Question is what's the pros and cons of these? Main difference I can see is the tilt on the under lift, century has a pivot where the lift attaches to the boom and the jerrdan and vulcan are solid. Why and what are the advantages to the pivot? thanks in advance trying to gather information to make an informed decision and i honestly have no experience with a hydraulic wrecker

Good day My 2010 612, or so Ramsey 234 Hydraulic Winch engages, and normally under load. Releases. If I hold the handle it helps, until the other day. Now it wont stay locked in at all, well- it will spool in. As long as there is no weight on it. Part #4 in diagram shows lock/engagement selector. Clutch I suspect is the culprit as the selector arm moves the drum in and out, as viewed through inspection hole. Anyone think anything else? Kind Regards Jim

I'm stuck in-between a career tow operator and his company owner, both being A-aggressive personalities and having an argument about. "Who has responsibility to check dolly bearings? File this under, "Are you kidding me," I personally think the tower should be hte "hands-on person", as they are the one's using the equipment frequently. It's as simple as giving the visual inspection and the, Rocking Test" (hands on the tires of loaded dollies rocking them back and forth). Because dolly bearings are wear items, it's easy to determine if dolly bearing are bad or need to be services. Besides, how many drivers take time to actually check dolly bearings? …

Theres times when you need to load a rig with a flat on dollies, I have a small rubber triangular chock that I set under the rear dolly cross bar, push the flat on top of the rear cross bar, install front cross bar tight then roll the flat in-between the bars, set up dollies & go. Sometimes that rubber chock/dolly bar slides as Im trying to push the flat up on the rear bar. I'm going to fabricate a spike or steel wedge that will bite the road for loading flats on dollies. Something simple, a piece of angle iron with a tab on the top ramp so it prevents the cross bar from sliding & over the angle. Anyone seen one made before? Ill share when Im done & have perf…

A new to be tow business owner called and asked me what equipment should be on a tow truck or carrier when applying to the highway patrol and law enforcement? The California Highway Patrol is quite specific regarding what basic equipment should be on the truck for tow trucks serving their contract. I find their list quite extensive and specific to law enforcement towing. I recommend towers download the CHP’s, Form 234B, Tow Truck Inspection Guide; Link: https://www.chp.ca.gov/ResearchAndPlanningSectionSite/Documents/Chp234B_052017.pdf The equipment requirements for law enforcement, FSP, highway patrol providers and LE towers is extensive; these re…

I have been looking for a set of dollies for a long time and missed out on a set that was only used three or four times made by Collins for $900. I have basically made up my mind that I'm either going to get a used set for extremely cheap and rebuild them or buy a brand new set. This morning I got a Labor Day Sale email from zips and they have a set of dollies for $1,500. They're made by Collins they have aluminum wheels and aluminum crossbar. I'm going to upgrade them to 5.7 in Wheels which I believe is only $50 extra. Is this a good price or is there a better time to buy? I'm not in a huge rush because I have not installed my wheel lift on my truck yet. I know a few yea…
