  1. The driver of a Florida State Farm roadside assistance tow truck and a stranded motorist were involved in a crash on the Howard Franklin Bridge that joins St. Petersburg to Tampa.

Attempting to avoid a collision with a tractor-trailer, another vehicle swerved onto the bridge shoulder and struck the State Farm truck, which then struck the disabled vehicle. Both vehicles erupted into flames.

Lopez and a passenger in the disabled vehicle have been hospitalized with serious injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer did not stop at the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol asks anyone with information to call 813-559-1800.

  9. I haven’t gotten anything done on my to do list today. Frustration has set in and I just want to go home. Not sure who or what to blame so I am blaming it on the weather, which is in the 90s with humidity so high you just sit and sweat. If you’re in a state where this weather is common, remember I live in Wisconsin, and most Wisconsin towers will tell you they can’t work in this heat for more than a day or two.

To tell you the truth, I’m not even working outside. I’m in an air-conditioned office and feel a little guilty sending my employees out to work in this heat. I don’t blame them for giving me “the look” when I let them know I have a call for them. If I think I’m having a bad day, so are they.

When a motorist’s vehicle breaks down he or she is definitely having a bad day and sometimes even though we show up to help them, the tow operator gets the third degree about not only that the customer’s vehicle is down, but all the other problems customers are facing in their world — late for work, one of the kids is sick, etc.

I was once advised that when frustration sets in to step away from my desk, close my eyes and take a few deep breaths. Okay, I followed that suggestion and while I feel a bit better, I think I’ll go and get that Dilly Bar I have in the freezer. Nothing like chocolate and ice cream to create a better mood in the summer time … and that too I’m blaming on the weather.

  15. How often have you seen someone just gushing over a baby? Saying things like, “Oh, he’s so cute,” or “He looks just like his dad.”

Then, when they reach their teenage years, what a different story — the eye-rolling parents with looks of exasperation because they don’t know what to do about the mood swings, defiance, and the where did my loving, little boy go? Then, as if overnight, they grow up to be adults and at 18 graduate high school and leave home.

I’m on a scholarship committee that directs scholarships to students from families in the towing and recovery industry. I thought my “job” would be easy, but I found it definitely is not.

The hardest part of the process was when reviewing applications and the applicant didn’t complete or send in all of the requirements. It broke my heart to see that happen. Writing a letter to inform the applicant of that was very hard for me to do.

The good news is, all of the applicants proved to be wonderful, young adults who not only come from great towing families but excel in their studies and are involved in their communities, sports, clubs and churches — some while holding down jobs.

To read their letters to the committee was heart-warming. To me, their goals and dreams were a reminder of the hope all of them bring to make our world a better place. It made me wonder why we always hear about the bad things young people do, and why we don’t give more shout-outs to these great students? They really are the cream of the crop, and the promise of some awesome, future leaders.

While not all children want to be involved in the towing and recovery industry, let’s encourage and support them in whatever they want to do or be. I know you’re raising some great kids — keep up the good work.
