  1. The Iowa State Patrol conducted an enforcement campaign of the state’s move over law along Highway 218 and I-80 in Johnson County on May 29.

According to a KWWL.com news report, tow trucks were staged on the roadside as part of the enforcement, and police vehicles also parked on the roadside pulled over motorists who failed to slow down and move over.

Sixty-six motorists were issued citations and 16 received warnings.

The report noted that in 2018, the Iowa State Patrol issued 308 citations for violating the law.

Chehadi’s co-workers at Ypsilanti’s Budget and Stadium Towing were among the tow operators and responders who honored him with a “Light Up the Night” procession on Wednesday May 29.

ANN ARBOR, MI – Nader Chehadi will not be forgotten if his colleagues can help it.

One year after his death while servicing a disabled school bus on the side of I-94, Chehadi’s coworkers at Ypsilanti’s Budget and Stadium Towing are honoring him with a “Light up the Night” memorial procession.

It’s set to roll through the streets of Washtenaw County Wednesday, May 29, to remind motorists to watch out for disabled vehicles. The procession is expected to be attended by towing companies throughout southeast Michigan, organizers said.

Accompanied by a police escort, the procession will leave the company’s lot at 876 Railroad St. around 6 p.m. and make its way to the stretch of I-94 near State Street where Chehadi was struck and killed a year ago on May 29.

“We’re hoping to use this sad occasion to memorialize (Chehadi) and remind people to slow down and move over when they see a vehicle on the side of the road,” Amanda Foster, a Budget and Stadium Towing employee, said.

Chehadi, 42, of Ypsilanti, was killed when an SUV crashed into a disabled school bus on the shoulder of eastbound I-94 near State Street in Pittsfield Township.

The driver charged for killing Chehadi, Andre-A Edwards, 26, of Ann Arbor, was bound over for trial following an emotional preliminary examination this week on Thursday, May 23.

She faces 19 felony charges, including murder, associated with the fatal crash.

Understanding the concept of what it takes to run a 24/7/365 towing and recovery business is not easy for many people. The normal day-to-day business aspect is similar to other businesses — employees, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, etc., — but the difference is what else it takes to be in this industry.

Towing companies are on call all the time and our services are needed most often in trying and difficult situations.

I had an employee who told me he was going to start his own towing business. He believed he would contract with a motor club and get “X” amount of calls a day and that would bring in “X” amount of money.

When I asked him who was going to answer the phone when he was out on a call, he said he would. Hmmm … okay. Then I asked him what he thought his profit would be after he paid the truck loan, insurance, fuel and maintenance?

After that, I asked him if he was sick or wanted to go on vacation, who was gong to run the calls? Then came the question: Did you talk this over with your wife? Letting her know you wouldn’t have time to do much of anything as far as family time?

I really didn’t want to discourage him, I just wanted to point that there’s more than just going on calls and collecting payment.

Over the years, I have gotten this attitude from some customers as well. When you advise them of the cost of a service they say, “Wow, I should start a towing company.”

    My response is: “Sold!”

  5. AAA will again be offering its Tow-to-Go safe ride program for the Memorial Day weekend as motorists prepare to hit the road.

AAA says this long holiday weekend will see the second-highest travel volume on record since AAA began tracking holiday travel volumes dating back to 2000, trailing only the bar set in 2005. Overall, an additional 1.5 million more people will take to the nation’s roads, rails and runways compared with last year, a 3.6 percent increase.

AAA notes that this service is not available everywhere and is subject to change without notice.

For the following states, the Memorial Day Tow-to-Go Program is statewide and begins Friday, 5/24 and ends Tuesday, 5/28 at 6 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. In these states, motorists can call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246.

  6. Kenworth is adding the TruckTech+® Remote Diagnostics system as an option for its medium duty conventional trucks.

Fleets and truck operators buying new Kenworth T270, T370, T440 and T470 models equipped with the 6.7-liter PACCAR PX-7 engine, 8.9-liter PACCAR PX-9 engine, or Cummins Westport L9N natural gas engine will be able to order Kenworth TruckTech+® Remote Diagnostics. The system enhances vehicle diagnostics by providing real-time engine health information to fleet managers and Kenworth dealers to help optimize truck uptime and productivity and allows fleets to track the location of the Kenworth trucks.

Kenworth TruckTech+ notifications include continue driving with no action required, keep driving and address the service code during the next service interval, head to a dealer for service, or pull over to prevent possible damage. If the customer needs to take the truck in for service, the system maps out the locations of the three closest repair facilities. The data is sent to a secure web portal where the fleet manager can review the truck’s location, status, identified issue and recommended solution.

If a repair is needed quickly, the data can be sent to the servicing dealer in advance so they can be prepared to work on the truck – saving customers time and money in initial diagnostics. When the truck arrives, the dealer’s service team can move quickly to remedy the problem.”

The Kenworth TruckTech+ option includes a free two-year subscription to the service. Longer term subscription options also are available at a cost.

A Kenworth TruckTech+ video is available on the Kenworth YouTube site and on the TruckTech+ section of Kenworth’s website.

  9. It’s been said that you create a first impression in the first 30 seconds of greeting someone.

At MarketSmart, we believe the same is true for websites. Just as you would critique a potential employee in an interview process, a visitor does the same when visiting your site. You have about 30 seconds to capture their interest.

Here are five tips to make the right impression on your company website:

    1. Be clear about what you do and how you do it differently. If a visitor doesn’t understand what you do and the value of choosing your company, how can they know if they need your service? Featured service “buttons,” usually photos, with brief descriptions, is a common way to highlight what your company offers.

    2. Intuitive navigation. Make navigating your site simple so visitors will know how to find the information they’re looking for.

    3. High quality images. Use large, high-quality photos of your latest equipment. Some visitors may not know the difference between a rotator and a rollback. This is a good way to show them.

    4. Keep it brief. Introduce your company with a welcome statement. It’s a great way to present a brief description of what your company offers. Place the company history on its own page.

    5. Contact info. Be certain your phone number, email and mailing address are clearly visible. The visitor could move on because they can’t find a way to contact you.

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”
