I have blocked an given light to several of these service trucks over the years. My question is, why do tow companies put such few warning lights on their service vehicles. They have 1/3rd or 1 half size light bars or full size older style light bars. Few have strobes on the corner. It's the Pay, vehicle and lights equal about what the motor club is paying for a service call. If that is the case then we're all doomed. At minimum the Hazardous situation they are cause will catch up to them and I'll sadly be sending out yet another tower down. This was the First in our Safety discussion series. Tow truck driver killed while assisting stranded driver near Port Perry Ontario Provincial Police say a tow truck driver was killed following a collision near Port Perry this morning. The crash occurred on Highway 12 between Scugog Line 2 and Scugog Line 3. “Early reports indicate that there was a tow truck that was there assisting a stranded motorist, a motorist who either lost control or hit the ditch,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said Thursday. “The tow truck driver was on scene. Another motorist apparently came into a collision with this person.” The tow truck driver subsequently died from injuries he sustained in the collision. Police have not released any details about the victim or confirmed if any charges will be laid in connection with the deadly crash. Schmidt advised motorists to be cautious around emergency vehicles, particularly in poor weather conditions. “Anytime you are driving in conditions that are less than ideal… slow down, drive to the conditions,” Schmidt said. “When you see flashing lights… slow down, move over, give them space. "We've got to have people slowing down, driving to the conditions and watching out when you see those amber lights on a tow truck or emergency lights off of a police car, fire truck or ambulance. Slow down as you approach." No further information has been released regarding the circumstances of the collision. The Greater Toronto Area was hit with its first snowfall on Thursday, which may have resulted in icy or slippery driving conditions. Unfortunately a young driver lost control of their car and slammed into the accident scene striking Todd and killing him instantly. Todd was 56 yrs old and was well known in the Scugog and Bowmanville area for driving taxi and working with Rays Towing. He most recently resided in Oshawa with his Mother. We need to stop changing tires on interstates and turnpikes. We need motor clubs to start dispatching these calls as "Tows". Want to help us change the industry? Why support TOW FIRST…It is estimated there are between 40 and 60 tow truck operators killed each year while performing road services and most occur on the side of the highway. How many more towers are injured but go unreported is unknown. In nearly every case, high-speed traffic is the primary factor for a tower dying. Even when the tower takes every step necessary to protect the breakdown location, they have no control of the approaching vehicles. The other drivers may be on their phone, texting, drunk, or doing anything other than paying attention to the road ahead. What do we want to accomplish with the TOW FIRST campaign? 1. Get towers to stop changing flat tires on the side of interstates and other high-speed highways. 2. Raise every tower’s level of awareness of the dangers of working next to a high-speed highway. 3. Have all towing company owners adopt the policy of towing vehicles to a safe location before changing a flat tire. We need your participation in the TOW FIRST campaign...and your families’. We need you to help spread the word on Facebook, Twitter and any other media available. We can save lives by stopping this single, most time consuming roadside service. We find them stopped in the travel lane constantly, they become a little agitated when told to either drive it to safety or if it is a rear flat we will tow it on the flat. If it is a dollie then it has to go to the lot. Every now and then they will have driven it to the point it was shredded. Passing at least one exit and a few pull offs, they stop in the traveled portion of the roadway. If you know what it is going to take to change this speak up. Same with companies allowing their drivers to change tires along these same roadways. Roadways similar to where other drivers have lost their lives. Either intentional or unintentional I have to wonder why their drivers are placed in harms way. Tow First was a Good Program, Motor Clubs were beginning to recognize the dangers. I would hope such a Legacy has not been totally forgotten with Dave passing.

Salina Wrecker Driver Killed in Crash A Salina man was killed in a crash late Tuesday afternoon on the Kansas Turnpike in southern Kansas. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 32-year-old Jacob Palmer was driving a 2014 Western Star Wrecker. The wrecker rolled into a ditch along the southbound lanes. According to the agency, Palmer was killed in the crash. The crash happened at 4:12 Tuesday afternoon, on the Kansas Turnpike in the area of mile marker 25 in Sumner County. RESOURCE LINK

There isn't an agency associated with Pulse Point in my area. It does appear to be a useful tool to alert you to numerous situations. Though it's primary purpose seems to be to Alert a qualified user trained in CPR to respond to a person in possible need of CPR nearby. After more than 3 years I would think that it would be in every large community. I'll likely uninstall it since it isn't going to work here.

These days because the driver pool is so small employers often find they must deal with such staffing and scheduling issues differently. 30 years ago 90 percent of drivers worked 24/7 rarely if ever called in sick. 20 years ago 60% drivers worked 24/7 and had every other weekend off. 10 years ago 40% of drivers had every other night off and every other weekend. Today drivers want every night off and only one weekend a month. I suppose if the driver pool was larger this my be possible. But either way the bitching about not making enough money continues. You would the hours you make the money, that is true in every industry. What does the the past couple of generations not understand about that concept. Oh right they were taught they were owed a living by ????

While this is SAD, they guy obviously thought it was worth more than it was. A Base 1970 isn't worth what a 1968 or 69 would be even though they look similar. Likely had quite a bit of Rust and Bondo with a 318 engine. Worth maybe $400. What do Mopar Guys Think?

I'm going to need to give this some serious thought. Did the Camera Escalate the situation and contribute to the death. Now I am not suggesting that the driver shares responsibility for his death. I would never suggest that since none os us know how we would react to each and every situation. While I am thankful that an image the murderer was captured. Was an exit strategy not a better option. I know that many are not going to agree, but I treat every individual I encounter with caution. Until I have assessed the situation, my guard is up though they may not be aware of it. Mental Health is a greater concern and if you have ever had a customer lose it at the scene or in the truck you will understand. This person which may have been an illegal certainly did not want their picture taken anymore than a person on the run. I do not know how to address this in an article at this point or if that message would even reach those who may find themselves in this situation. But, it is something that needs to be researched as the number of such society encounters increase.

Dave, while I do agree with you. I have found that it is difficult in some markets to hit the ground running and succeed without some Motor Club work in your profile. This is work that the established companies in those market have often shed. While more than half of all new towing companies fail within the first 3 years. Those who have a plan have more success even with the motor clubs in their mix. Starting out they may have as much as 80% of their business from Motor Clubs. While at the end of 3 years unless they are say AAA preferred and only conduct AAA service calls. The Motor Club portion of their business will have dropped to nearly 50%. If the company has chased their tail, I mean worked their tails off and make it past 3 years the road should make it possible to chose only profitable calls. Getting into any business is an investment, anyone that thinks they are going to show a serious profit or any profit the first year getting into the wrong industry. Those kind of start ups are rare, I know plenty of companies with 3 or more years that are still struggling to hold on even with fewer employees and no replacement trucks. The ability to maintain, add on or replace equipment after 3 years is key. Also, congrats on Winning the TowMate TM-FLUX Wireless Tow Light this week.

I actually have two of them. One with the shoulder mount, however on my belt I always have it. Might get another belt clip and add one to the other side. I dunno, some have suggested it. I think it would look silly, but if silly saves my life I am game....

I have a total of 7 Hockey Puck Style Electronic Flares. I have gotten hit by them a couple of times. They used to get run over more often then they do now, but then since I got the Guardian Angel with a Belt Clip. I do not put them out unless the recovery is going to take enough time to justify them.
