She is a medical doctor who had worked for Caprisa (the Centre for the Aids Programme in South Africa). In October, the couple gave up their jobs in Durban and moved to Midrand, north of Joburg, where they had jobs in the pharmaceutical industry. However, tragedy stuck on Thursday a day after the couple had welcomed in th…

As South Africa's on-going (towing) turf wars continue, another tow business owner was gunned down outside his home Sunday just before midnight. the location of the shooting was the site of the shooting homicide of this guy's business partner last year. The victim in this shooting, Kalvin Periasamy, was said to have been involved in the 2016 murder of tower Enver Ramsamy. This is the 19th shooting/homicide involving tow truck drivers and tow business owners I've recorded in 10-years. The South African government still hasn't gained any hold to control the violence that is reportedly gang related. They obviously take their business and competition seriously there. R …

I have sad news to report from the South African Cape where a 38-year-old tow truck driver from, Algoa Towing and Recovery, was killed in a hit and run around 3AM this morning. It was reported that the tow truck driver was on the side of the road taking photos of the accident for insurance purposes when a small pickup truck struck him and then fled the scene. Christine and I send our prayers and sympathy to the tower’s family and to Algoa Towing. R. https://www.dispatchlive.co.za/news/2019-05-25-tow-truck-driver-killed-in-hit-and-run/

If you follow international news, its been reported that 5x tow truck drivers, in Durban, South Africa, were shot yesterday as they stood in the parking lot of an urban gas station early yesterday when a drive-by shooting killed one on-scene and another died at an area hospital . Three other tow truck drivers were also hit by gunfire and they are in serious condition. A motive is not readily known, however Durban has been a hotbed of violence against and toward tow truck operators who have battled each other in past years over alleged turf wars. It was also said that one of the deceased was a well-known tow boss (unconfirmed). Here's a link to a news story ... scroll down…

A well-known insurance firm has accused a Newcastle tow truck company of “unscrupulous business practices and borderline blackmail tactics” to secure undue payments. The case highlights the problems being experienced with many towing companies that the Weekend Witness has reported about recently. In papers before the Pietermaritzburg high court this week, Santam alleged that Atlas Towing’s refusal to release a vehicle was unreasonable and “tantamount to extortion”. Santam said it tried to reason with Atlas and when that failed it got its attorney involved, but that also proved useless. The only option afterwards was to turn to the court…
