  1. Thank you to Suburban Towing of Louisville for doing such a fantastic job on the recovery.

    The eyes of the world were watching and you guys performed fast, efficiently and effectively, which makes our entire industry look better to the outside world. Doing things the "Cowboy" way makes for better TV (drama like Highway Through Hell and similar shows) but should that recovery have gone wrong it would have made us all look a little foolish.

  2. This looks pretty accurate to me FWIW, with the following exceptions. I would move Allied up a few and Agero & Urgently down to 16th or worse next to Honk. In my area they consistently call us with ridiculous offers (usually about 25% of our normal rates). $39.00 for a service or tow 30 miles away.

  3. I am having trouble hiring staff and the Mrs is getting overwhelmed with answering the phone 24-7 without any sleep for weeks on end so I wondered if anyone is using a "service" to supplement their own in house dispatching.

    I see Holly's Dispatch Service advertised and spoken with them on the phone. they seemed nice and trustworthy but frankly, 'Turning the keys to the castle' over to someone you don't really know seems overwhelming.

    Please speak of your own experiences; good and bad.

We got a call last month to winch out a u-haul truck and the dispatch company was adamant with my dispatcher that our driver must not reveal the amount of the tow we were charging as they were a 3rd party and marked up our bill a small percentage to cover their own expenses. We've seen this before but had no idea to the degree this had gotten.

    Our driver performed the service and had the customer sign the invoice that showed no pricing on it when the customer gave him some attitude about highway robbery and he should be ashamed of what we charge.

    Knowing our prices are not out of line with industry standards, my driver asked him to explain to which he popped his bank account open on his phone and showed him a $400 charge from the same day to a company called "Roadside".

    They then attempted to get the driver to spill the beans on what we charge and my driver kept his composure stating the computer handles all the charges an he cannot access them unless he is collecting them.

    We were happy to do the service for our stated amount but we feel pretty upset knowing they are marking up out charges 400% to cover their expenses. Made us feel icky to be involved with them.

  6. We had similar (bad) luck with Agero. The dispatchers will tell you anything to get you to take the call. We blocked all their numbers and life has never been better. We had one of their providers pick up a car from our impound last week and tow it 50 miles for peanuts. Glad we took a photo of him wheel lifting the all wheel drive Audi out the gate. Agero called and wanted us to pay for damaging the car ($15k) so we sent the photos of us loading and unloading the car on one of our rollbacks for initial tow, the photo of the tow-out and then told them to pound sand. The owner of the car is furious they used some cut rate tower with no knowledge of how to do the job correctly. We told him to call his insurance and complain to them, they were the ones who used agero. Progressive and State Farm will wake up  one of these days and realize what a debacle they have created for their customer/policyholders.

  7. Some prosecutors offices have a victim compensation fund to take care of those type of things, but only if you were a victim. If you were the suspect of the crime you are likely on your own. Frankly after 9 months you probably don't own your car anymore the impound lot or state does/did.

  8. Just what the world needs right is some ass hat harassing a business owner and the police to make a "funny" video and post it on the internet. I wonder how cute he would have felt if the police locked him up in the pysch ward for 48 hours of observation since he has a mental issue thinking he in a non-human inanimate object such as a tripod.

  9. Driver was loading a 2023 Chevy SUV and not even using the remote, it was located in the door. When he let off the winch control lever it failed to stop and crushed the front end of the SUV into the headache rack before he could get the PTO shut off. $5k in damages to customer vehicle. The rack saved my truck cab. The photo is when the truck was new not after the incident.

     

    We took the module off the truck and the issue went away so I don't think it was a sticking valve or solenoid. It was like the Lodar unit was receiving the signal from some other outside source.

  10. While we are on the drive-line removal subject; Please, everyone take care to make sure there is no torque on the drive-line when you are removing them. A failed transmission or rear differential can result in the drive-line storing a tremendous amount of energy that will result in injury or death when it is unknowingly unleashed. Install a drive-line buddy or similar device if you suspect there is any remaining torque on it. When in doubt pull the axles; its a pain but much safer.

  11. I like how the first thing you looked at was the drive-line. Thinking to yourself: "Thank God its not a Meritor!"

    I hate them too.

     

    Placing cones out next is priority for me. Well done. Proper set up too.

     

    Also I want to commend you for breaking the u-joints bolts loose with a breaker bar or ratchet. I have seen the results of using an impact and the bolts are rounded off making them very difficult to remove.

     

    You had her ready to tow in less than 30 minutes and did everything in a proper fashion. Good Job!

     

    A couple of pointers from an old guy; I like to put my light-bar on the rear of the towed vehicle right after I set up my cones to give more warning to the oncoming traffic. (I have my hazards on and turn on the hazards on the casualty if possible.) I also like to have brakes from my vehicle to the towed unit and safety chains/straps. I realize you may have done that after the video ended or at the exit ramp up the road so don't feel like I'm criticizing you.

    Keep up the good work and stay safe out there. That precious little passenger is counting on you.

     

     

     

    More on the triangles

    Have you ever wondered why most truck drivers set up their orange triangles the wrong way? Why are they consistently doing this wrong?

     

    Place triangle reflector triangles near your vehicle to direct oncoming traffic away from your vehicle.

    • As a rule of thumb, you should put the first warning triangle 10 feet directly behind your vehicle on the side closest to the road.
    • Then place the second warning triangle 100 feet behind your vehicle, lining it up directly in the middle of your car’s position.
    • Finally, put the third warning triangle 300 feet from your car, lined up with the side of your vehicle furthest from the road.

    I am sure there will be operators who run with them on, hopefully when they get that ticket they will stop running with the yellows on the all the time as well.  It is amazing to me how many operators run with the lights on all the time.  It is no wonder the people are desensitized to the yellow's.
