One man injured after loaded tow truck crashes into pickup on Nieman Road in Shawnee (KS)

One man was injured when his pickup truck was T-boned by a loaded tow truck on Nieman Road at 49th Street on Tuesday afternoon. The tow truck was hauling two vehicles damaged in an earlier crash when it was involved in this crash. Shawnee Police, Fire and Johnson County Med-Act were called to the crash at 2:25 p.m. The fire department reported significant damage to the pickup truck and that the driver was trapped inside. Johnson County Med-Act transported a man in his early 70s to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. Virgel T. Fakes, 84, of Jetmore, Kansas, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 at the Hodgeman County Health Center. Virgel Fakes was owner of Fakes Garage, Welding service and Towing service for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Protestant Faith, Mason and Odd Fellows Lodges. He also served as mayor and city councilman for 20 years. He is survived by his wife Betty; son Dale; daughter Virginia Carrington; brothers Herman and Clearnce; sisters Bertie Simpson and Odessa Smith; and one grandson.

A 25-year-old Salina man is accused of ramming his car into a tow truck several times after a confrontation over texting and driving. The incident happened at around 1 p.m. Tuesday. The 41-year-old tow truck driver told police that he and the suspect, Steven Viar, were heading north on Ohio Street and Viar's Kia was swerving into his lane and nearly hit his truck.
