  1. A little off-topic, but related.  When the corona-virus got going around St. Patrick's Day, I immediately stopped taking passengers in the truck.  And I have gone all this time with little or no issues with anybody because of it.  The reason for no passengers is that there is no way that you can maintain six feet between the driver and the passenger.  Anyone who wants to argue with me about that is arguing with the wrong guy.  I tested positive for the corona- virus.  I paid the price.  And I was quarantined to my house for 5 weeks.  I do not know who I caught it from.  But it is a possibility that I caught it from a passenger.  Luckily, my wife didn't catch it from me.  From the start, I thought that I was careful.  I started wearing a mask right away.  Back then, no one had masks for sale.  For a few weeks, I wore an auto body respirator.  I felt like a dork.  But that respirator was more effective than the crappy paper ones that we can buy today.  I could have picked up the virus inside a customer's car, or car trunk while changing a tire.

Anyway, I got into it with a customer about no ride in the truck last week.  He stood on his soapbox and preached to me that ultimately, we are obliged to take passengers, no matter what.  No exceptions.  I pointed out to him that the current climate with the pandemic justifies making a change of that "obligation" to protect us, the drivers.  To me, a ride has always been a courtesy we extended to the customer, and never an obligation to the customer on our part.  (By the way, I have been wanting to end passengers riding with me for years.  Consider the practice ENDED.)  So, eliminating passengers is about the only concession that we get to protect ourselves.  Most workers at grocery stores got a raise in their pay, commonly called "hazard pay".   And even with that, store employees and restaurant workers are charged with enforcing face mask requirements, which is way above their pay grade.  No easy task, considering how people can be assholes.  But the hazard pay that grocery store workers get is more than we got from the motor clubs.  We got nothing, as usual.

Another ongoing issue is the fact that I haven't changed a flat tire on the highway in about 7 years.  I tell the motor clubs that it is a tow only.  Occasionally they go along with me, and I tow the car.  Most of the time, the dispatcher HANGS UP ON ME.  One day I told a dispatcher that on average, a tow operator got hit and killed once every 6 days.  The dispatcher said that she felt that it was a good ratio.  I can pull up to the car with the flat tire, drive it up on the bed, throw a couple of straps on it, and get the heck out of there.  Then I will pull over to a safer spot, and tie down the car properly.  I insist that I will go home safe at the end of every day.

As for the comment that hanging up on a dispatcher will not get us any traction, that is correct.  It won't.  But it is just about impossible to talk to a human being at any motor club, never mind get any kind of a raise.  I'm sure some idiot towed that Lamborghini for the same low, low price as he regularly tows VW Jettas.  It doesn't make it right.

  2. One day last week, I got a call from Swoop, wanting me to tow a Lamborghini.  The dispatcher said that first, I will need to fax over my certificate of insurance, proving that I have a $300,000 limit to cover that car.  So I asked her, how much are they going to pay me to tow that car.  Special handling and special insurance coverage translates to a special tow fee, right?.  Her answer was "Ahhhhhhhhh, well no, just the regular fee.  So I asked her if they intend to pay me the same fee to tow a Lamborghini, as they pay me to tow a VW Jetta.  Her answer:  YES.  Needless to say, I hung up on her.  These people are MORONS.  I get no thrill to drive down the road with a Lamborghini on the back of the truck.  I get my thrill when I am well paid for my work.  And that ain't happening.

  7. Old Tow, at 83, you are at the highest level of danger.  We quarantined my mother, who will be 93 on Saturday, since the beginning of March.  I hadn't come in contact with her until 2 weeks ago.  We couldn't take any chances.  Be safe.

  8. I am starting to get the hang of Swoop.  Actual Swoop calls are processed differently than Agero calls.  Same rates.  Just different processing.  Swoop sends out all kinds of calls that I can't do, mostly way out of my area.  I got a Swoop request at 6 o'clock this morning to change a flat tire in Salisbury, MA.  Salisbury is way out of my regular service area.  They indicated on the message that they were going to pay me $41 and change to do the call.  I don't know how they justify the "change".  Are they paying us by the inch now?  They are going to have to pay me more than that to get me to go to Salisbury.  So I clicked "rejected"  Then you go to another screen.  There is a list of reasons why the call was rejected.  I clicked "out of area".  I save all of the rejected calls in a separate email file.  I will soon have enough rejected call sheets to wallpaper my kitchen.  No matter what they claim, these rejected calls are held against me.  When you go on that page with the red and green pie charts, the chart on the lower left tells you how many calls you rejected, and how much money it represents.  I's an outrageous number.  There is no way I rejected that many local calls.  I get a lot of requests to go to Portsmouth, NH, which is over 40 miles away.  Also, Exeter, NH, Chester, NH, Ipswich, MA, etc.  The out of area requests are worse than ever.  At least during the day, I am awake.  These out of area calls at 2:00am are suck.

Meanwhile, I continue to decline to carry passengers in the truck.  I was out of work for 5 weeks, quarantined in my house, because I caught the corona virus.  That's 5 weeks with practically no revenue.  There is no way that I will take a chance of getting that again.  I always wear my mask.  I wash my hands constantly.  And I wear latex gloves.  I was doing that right from the beginning.  But I got the virus anyway.  I had some work done on the flatbed.  The exhaust pipe that connects the manifold to the muffler had a hole in it.  It was loud.  And the cab was filling up with hot exhaust.  In order to change that pipe, we had to remove the "doghouse cover" to access the pipe.  And we had to remove the passenger seat so the mechanic had some place to lay.  I still haven't put the seat back.  I am having it cleaned, before I put it back.  Maybe I won't put it back.  Maybe a refrigerator will be more useful, LOL!

  11. Still alive in MA, despite the fact that I had 5 weeks off, quarantined to my house, chained to the radiator.  I felt fine during that entire ordeal.  I had no symptoms.  But the 5th retest finally set me free.  Five weeks is a long time to take in very little revenue.  I ate a lot of soup, Spaghetti-O-s, and cold cereal!  And my tee shirt size is still 2XL.

  13. Strangely enough, the passenger seat of my flatbed is out of the cab.  Not for the purpose of keeping customers out.  But because we had to change the exhaust pipe that comes off of the back of the engine.  And the only easy way to change that pipe is to remove the doghouse cover and the seat.  I am going to get the seat cleaned, while it's out.

As far as COVID-19 is concerned, I tested positive for the virus at the beginning of May.  And I was quarantined to my house for 5 weeks.  That's 5 weeks of virtually no revenue.  If you think that I am going to take an unnecessary chance of catching that again, you'd be wrong.  I do not know where I caught the virus.  It could have anywhere.  It could have been at the grocery store, touching the gas pump nozzle at the filling station, etc.  I don't know anyone else personally who had the virus.  I stopped taking passengers early on.  I wear latex gloves.  And I stepped up hand washing and sanitizing early on too.  I followed the rules.  But I caught it anyway.  I could have caught it just about anywhere.  NO PASSENGERS IN MY TRUCK ANYMORE!

  14. Despite all the efforts on my part to be safe, I tested positive for the Corona-Virus.  I was quarantined in my house for 5 weeks.  I ended the practice of carrying passengers in the truck right at the beginning.  I have worn a mask and latex gloves from right from the beginning.  And I still caught it.  Yet my wife always tested negative, thank God.  I'm good now, and I have been back to work for a week.  But I have never been so broke.   It will take a long time to get caught up.  So today, I wear my mask every minute that I am outside my house. I use gloves and hand sanitizer.  I do not want to catch that again.

  15. I talked to a woman from the Swoop Provider Advocate Group on Friday.  Fancy name.  Sounds official.  I explained to her a couple of problems that I have been having, namely how do I submit invoices?  She said that she would send me some information and a video to watch.  She sent nothing.  I still can't figure out how to submit invoices.  If the deadline for weekly submissions is still Sunday night at midnight, then I will miss that deadline.  I went 5 weeks out of work with zero revenue.  And the three weeks prior to that were the deadest weeks that I have ever experienced in the 38 years that I have been in business.  Until they help me get this stupid platform up and running, as far as I'm concerned, they are suspended.  When they get this mess straightened out, I'll resume handling calls.

  16. I have always wanted to end the practice of carrying passengers in the tow truck.  But it's tough to initiate, unless we have help- in this case, the Corona-Virus.  I have had a few people- FAT PEOPLE- who would have fallen out of the truck if I hadn't been there to break their fall.  I have also been kicking around the idea of mounting a couple of cameras inside the cab, aimed at the passengers and at me.  I am done hauling passengers.  I have a deal with UBER and LIFT.  I don't haul passengers, and they don't tow cars.  And that's how it is going to stay.  I will never allow a customer to ride in the cab with me again.

I have been out of work sick for 5 weeks.  I have determined that if being quarantined in my house for 5 weeks is anything like retirement, retirement is not for me!  Today is my second day back.  I am trying.  But I just can't get the hang of the Swoop platform. I have never dealt with such garbage.  I went on my email last Friday.  And I discovered 26 Swoop calls that had been dispatched to me without my knowledge.  I opened up each call and read it.  A little more than half the calls were WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY out of my area,  So what has changed?  That's been happening for years.  I have been trying to get in touch with the woman who set up my account.  So far, I only get voice mail.  Anybody else having better luck with this than me?
