I probably get 1 or 2 calls a week. I charge them a fair price. And they pay by credit card every time. No problems with them at all.

I have Agero send my calls to my email address. And I retrieve them from my Smartphone. It generally works well. Occasionally, a call doesn't make it to the email box. So I have to track it down. On Labor Day, which was 6 days ago, none of the calls from Agero were in my inbox. I went 'round and 'round with them on Friday. Of course, I talked to dope after dope. Anyway, I discovered that all of the missing calls were in my JUNK MAIL BOX! I have no idea why that is. And I have no way of stopping it. Does anyone out there know how I can prevent my Agero calls from ending up in the junk file? It is only Agero calls that are going to the junk file. Every other message is going to the proper email box like it is supposed to.

One thing that I have caught them at is they are stealing my over-mileage. I have been charging $4.00/mile for over-mileage for a number of years. Obviously, the over-mileage rate is higher than the loaded mileage rate that they currently pay us. A while back, I noticed that I hadn't collected any over-mileage from a customer in several months. It seems like the only time that I collect over-mileage from a customer is when he is paying the over-mileage with cash. If Agero could figure a way for the customer to jam the cash into the phone receiver, we would lose that too. I have had a number of customers complain to me that Agero charged them $4.00/mile for the over-mileage. That's what I charge, but I don't tell them that. On a long tow, I need the higher over-mileage rate to make up for the lower standard rate that they are paying us. About a year ago, I towed a car from a local college here, to a nearby repair shop. It was a minimum loaded mile tow, covered in full by the customer's Progressive Insurance coverage. Her limit was $50.00. The next day, I towed the car back to the college. The motor was blown in the car. She had recently bought the car, before she left home for college. So she wanted it to go back to the local car dealer back home, so they would change the engine under warranty. The next day, I got a call to tow the car from Massachusetts to New Jersey, which is where the woman was from. I asked about coverage. I was told that the call was covered in full, at the standard rate. I asked about over-mileage. I was told that Agero had collected the over-mileage directly from the customer using the customer's credit card over the phone. I was expected to transport the car to New Jersey at the lower standard loaded mile rate, and to return home empty. Like I said, I need the higher $4.00/mile to make up for the lowed standard loaded mile rate. Without the higher over-mile rate, the call is not worth doing. It is not worth starting up the truck for such a low fee. I told Agero to shove the call. I talked to the customer. She confirmed to me that they required her to pay the over-mileage directly to them. So ultimately, it was their intention to steal my over-mileage money all along.A few years ago, I discovered the hard way that they had cut the winching fee by cutting the minimum time from 60 minutes to 30 minutes, resulting in them cutting the fee that they paid us in half. The actual hourly rate is the same. They just cut the billable time in half. I had recovered a car that was accidentally driven down a flight of cement stairs from a higher parking lot to a lower parking lot. When I reconciled the monthly statement, that's when I discovered their fancy accounting. I called to complain. I was told that the rate is the same as before. They just re-wrote the rule of how much of the call they covered, even though my contract with them called for the full fee. They did not notify us about the change, so we did not have the opportunity to charge the customer a co-payment. I have never winched another car out of the mud, or from a snowbank for them again.
And like the rest of you, I have also experienced their refusal to pay for GOAs. They probably pay for 1 out of every 5 submitted, even though I always get the dispatcher's name and extension number.
I have done a couple of SWOOP calls. I knew that there was a connection between Agero and SWOOP because they called me on an Agero outgoing phone line. I have every outgoing Agero line saved and identified. So there's no question. I charged them a higher rate than my Agero rates. And I made them pay by credit card.
And finally, I noticed recently that there is a line on the emailed call sheet that is appears that if there is an overnight storage charge, it is all-inclusive. I called about that. And I was told that they would no longer pay any overnight storage charges. I indicated to them that I no longer offer overnight storage. The dispatcher stated that I am required to provide overnight storage when requested. And I told her that they are required to pay for said storage, when requested.
I do very little for them at night anymore. Most of the night calls are garbage. I get a ton of requests for service that are miles and miles away from my contracted area. Most of the night requests are for out-of-area calls. I am sick of getting awakened at 3:00am to change a flat tire in Portsmouth, NH, Boston, MA, etc. When my part-time night driver left, I haven't had any luck finding a replacement. There isn't enough billable night work to justify paying a guy to be available all night anyway.
I have been with Cross Country/Agero for somewhere between 35 and 40 years. They used to be the best to deal with. Now they are a nightmare for me every day. I love my job because I leave people better off than when I found them. But the administrative crap that I have to deal with is killing me. I will be 66 years old next week. It is my intention to begin collecting Social Security when I turn 67. And I have been planning to continue to work on light duty as long as I can. Agero will put me in the ground before that.

What about Agero's newest policy of collecting the over-mileage directly from the customer by charging their credit card? They charge the customer the $4.00/mile over-mileage rate that I charge. They try to keep the higher rate, and tell us that the job is covered in full at the regular lower rate. Every time that I catch them doing that, I tell them to take the call and shove it. That is them stealing from us.
-
Good posts. But you have missed a lot. Over a year ago, I discovered that they were cheating me out of my over-mileage. They collect over-mileage directly from the customer, using their credit card over the phone. They charge the $4.00/mile for over-mileage like I do. But they try to get me to do the whole call at their much lower basic mileage rate. Last summer, I had an Agero call at a local college. The client was Progressive. And the customer had a $50 limit. I towed the car to a local repair shop one day. And I towed the car back to the college the next day. The motor was blown. The girl had purchased the car a couple of weeks earlier. So I got called to tow the car to New Jersey. I asked how much coverage she had. I was told that the call was covered in full at the basic rate. I pointed out to the dispatcher that the customer had only $50 coverage for the previous 2 tows. The dispatcher told me that the customer was charged for all of the over-mileage on her credit card by Agero. And I would be expected to perform the whole call at the lower, basic rate. I told her that I could not afford to perform the call so cheap, and that I needed the $4.00/mile over-mileage rate to make the call feasible. She basically said "tough shit". So I told her to take the call and shove it. This has happened repeatedly. I collected $112 of over-mileage for first time in 6 months yesterday. Must be an oversight on their part.
Now on to the automated dispatching system. All things considered, it's not too bad. But the customers on the road absolutely hate it. Customers ask me what their alternatives are. The only alternative is AAA.
Another issue is their mapping software. Apparently, it is fairly new. And they are suffering glitches. I am having a problem with it's accuracy. Let's say that there is a disabled car on I-93 in Andover. So the dispatcher asks the customer what his location is. The customer says "I-93 north, @ exit 45, Andover". That's a specific location. But Agero's software will seek the closest surface street, which in this case could be River Road, Old River Road, Shattuck Road, or Federal Street. All streets are within a tenth of an air mile of the actual location on I-93. So I get the call emailed to me, stating that the call is at 300 Federal Street. I go to Federal Street, and I can't find the car. I call the customer. And the customer says that he is on I-93 northbound. And the customer also says that the dispatcher argued with him, stating that the customer was mistaken about his location. Their software is incapable of listing a highway location.
I'll add to this post later on. Duty calls.

Here's a little story, slightly off-topic. I just got a call from EVERSOURCE, which is a gas and electric company. The voice told me that my electricity will be turned off in 30 minutes, unless I "pay up". The only problem is, we don't have EVERSOURCE in my area. (They have EVERSOURCE in the Boston area, and in New Hampshire.) We get our electricity from National Grid. And our gas from the world famous Columbia Gas Company. (And both bills are current.) But the kicker is, the voice from EVERSOURCE is the same voice as the Agero Automated Dispatching System, aka Jackie! I guess that Jackie is moonlighting on Agero, LOL!

I finally figured out why I accidentally give huge ETAs. So I am holding the phone in my hand. I always have the phone on speaker, so I can hear it better. The voice asks me for an ETA. We'll say that I punched in 60 minutes. I need to wait for the voice to acknowledge my ETA, before I put the phone up to my ear. If I put the phone up to my ear too soon, my ear comes in contact with other numbers on the screen, and I end up with an ETA of 60789 minutes. And there is no way of editing what you punched in. So the remedy is to hold the phone in your hand on speaker, until you get the PO number. Then hang up.

This is the final FOX Network broadcast of the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Race of the 2019 season.
Sadly, it is the final appearance of Darrell Waltrip in the FOX broadcast booth. Darrell has been with NASCAR on FOX since 2001, when FOX began covering NASCAR. Coincidentally, FOX began broadcasting NASCAR races on the day that Dale Earnhardt died. Best wishes to Darrell Waltrip on your retirement. I will miss you! Boogity, Boogity, Boogity! Let's go racing boys!
I am usually sad when the FOX Sports' portion of the NASCAR season ends. But not this year. After the Daytona 500, FOX cut Chris Myers and the Hollywood Hotel from the broadcast. Chris did not lose his job, as he serves FOX Sports in many capacities, like baseball, football, boxing, etc. And they have been utilizing a lot more drivers as announcers in the Xfinity series. Basically, they are running the whole broadcast on the cheap. I fear that Mike Joy could be the next to go. I hope not. He is the heart and soul of that place.

I noticed a change in the information that appears on the printed Agero call sheet that concerns me. When you get to the line that says "Coverage Details", the next line tells you what the coverage is, "in full, $50, etc". There is a line below where the call limit that says :"Additional Info. Included: Storage Cost". I don't know what that's supposed to mean. But if they think that the storage cost is all inclusive now, and they are not going to pay a storage fee anymore, they have an awakening coming.
I don't store very many cars for them anyway. But even so, I have had a couple of claims over the past few of years of damage while the car was in my yard. In both cases, a mechanic at the car dealership fessed up, and I was cleared. If we are liable for something, then there has to be a fee. So if that little message means that we have to store for free, no more storage for them. I'll do the same with storage, that I did with winching. When they changed the rules, resulting in a 50% cut in the winching fee, I never winched another car again for them, to this very day.

This incarnation of the automated dispatch isn't too bad. But it has it's issues. If you are talking to a customer on the phone, and your caller ID says that the Agero Automated is calling, and if you click over to it, you can't click back. You can't put Automated on hold. You will lose the Automated call. On the other hand, if you leave your customer hanging on hold too long, you will lose that call. Seems like you're doomed, one way or the other. The best thing to do is ignore the Automated when you are on the other line with another customer. In about 3 or 4 minutes, a live dispatcher will call you with the same call that you ignored earlier.
The Automated voice does not identify as Agero. The voice just goes right into the call. And as someone else said, you have to click for more information to get the whole story.
This morning, I got an automated call with a woman's voice. And that call originated from Honolulu, HI. Whereas, the calls with the man's voice originate from Chelsea, MA. I had no idea that Agero had a call center in Hawaii.
Then we have the automated system with a woman's voice that cancels calls. However, that automated system does not give you a GOA. And you don't talk to it. You still have to chase them down for that.
Another issue that I have had is when I answer my Smartphone on the road while I'm driving, I really should pull over right away. But I usually don't. Sometimes after the voice asks for the ETA, when I go to press the numbers, and I simultaneously hit a pothole, my finger slides across the keyboard of the phone. The result was an ETA of 25,678 minutes! Needless to say, I didn't end up with that call. That was last week. I think that it has happened to me 3 times.
And finally, as long as I have your attention, it is time for Agero to stop making recommendations to out of town customers, as to where they can take their car for repairs. Their list was compiled during the Clinton Administration. And it hasn't been updated since. And they swear that their data is state-of-the-art, despite the fact that I can prove otherwise. Most of the time, the shop that Agero has selected for the customer has moved, or is out of business. Agero should leave it up to us to refer an out of town customer to the proper repair shop. We know where the good shops are. And who to avoid. But Agero is so afraid that a repair shop might slip the tow truck driver a twenty dollar bill for the referral. There's nothing wrong with that practice. But I have always avoided it. I don't want to end up beholding to any shop.
My favorite call like that was a call on I-93 in Andover, a few years back. I was told to take it to a shop in Wilmington. I knew that the shop wasn't there anymore, and I told Agero that. But they wouldn't listen, and demanded that I take the car where I was told to take it. So I did. I parked the car in front of the overhead door. And I took the key and put it through the mail slot. The "For Rent" sign was clearly showing in the window. But I did what I was told, like the good little indentured servant that I am. The next day, Agero called, claiming that I had towed the car to the wrong shop. I had the printed sheet clearly stating the exact destination. Agero demanded that I go back and tow the car to another shop. I refused. First of all, someone is going to have to contact the building owner to come and open the door to retrieve the key. And besides, the car isn't in my area anymore. And Agero wanted the car to be towed the second time FREE. That's didn't happen. Not my problem. I told them that the destination provided was wrong. But they wouldn't listen.
