  1. So you're saying that this may not be the best time to ask for some sort of a rate increase to take the sharp edge off the almost daily fuel cost increases?  I just paid $6.05.9 per gallon for diesel fuel.  That's three increases in fuel price totaling over a dollar this week alone.  Something has to give.

  6. Just about every year, a bill will get filed in the Massachusetts legislature that, if passed, would require towing companies to accept credit cards for payment of towing and storage.  The problem is, there are no provisions that we can take to protect ourselves against fraud.  I agree with a previous poster.  If you get burned by someone with a contested credit card transaction, you shouldn't be required to take that scumbag's credit card again.  My personal policy is that anyone who burns me in any way will get no service from me ever again for life.

That guy who fraudulently burned me for $1365 worth of damage that didn't happen while attempting to unlock his Porsche last August will never get another bite of the apple from me.  And a few years ago, my service truck blew a power steering line, rendering the truck very difficult to drive.  So I returned to the shop, moved most of my equipment from the service truck to my own personal pickup truck, so I could service the last two road service calls I had.  I arrived at the customer's house.  He started ranting and raving that my pickup truck did not have a name on it.  In my haste to get back out on the road, I neglected to put my magnetic signs on my truck.  He asked me 5 times "what do you have to say for yourself?"  After the fifth time, I told him that the service truck broke down, and I rushed to get another truck on the road to complete my calls.  He said that I had no excuse to fail to put signs on the truck.  I changed the tire, and went on my way.  When I attempted to submit the invoice, I discovered that the P/O no longer existed.  When I inquired to dispatch, I was told that the customer complained because my truck had no name on it (which is illegal, technically).  And he wanted me punished.  So they canceled the call, and I was paid nothing.  About 2 months later, I got another flat tire call at the same address.  I told dispatch that I was unavailable for service.  They called back 2 more times, pleading with me to help the guy.  I said I wasn't available.  Finally the guy called me himself to remind me that he lived in my area, and I was obliged to service him.  I told him that I can refuse to service anyone at any time for any reason.  He disagreed with that.  He asked why I wouldn't service him.  I told him that maybe he shouldn't have filed a complaint about the lack of lettering on my truck.  As complaints go, that one was pretty lame.  And that was the last that I heard from him.  I get very few customer complaints.  This one surprised me.

As for me, in my own private life, I rarely complain about anything.  If I got a lousy meal in a restaurant, more than likely, I would just pay the bill and be on my way.  I probably would not go back.  But I wouldn't make a stink.  A couple of years ago, I got a bad haircut from Great Clips.  I have been going to Great Clips for years, and I have always been satisfied.  I did not tip the stylist who gave me the bad haircut.  The next time that I went in, that stylist tried to get me to let her cut my hair again.  I told her that I would wait for the next stylist.  And I also told her that I wouldn't let her cut my lawn.  The next time I went in there, the other stylists told me that she had been fired because of numerous customer complaints.

  7. I'm curious.  What credit card was it?  The reason that I ask that years ago, we towed a guys car for snow removal four times over a period of a couple of weeks.  The guy was a moron.  How many times would you have to get towed before you got it through your thick head that you couldn't park there?  I was in the habit of accepting credit cards for police tows.  I never had a problem with that because I would make a color copy of the driver's license and both sides of the credit card on the same sheet.  That was never legal.  But it was the only way that I would accept plastic for police tows.  Otherwise- cash only.  But this customer used American Express.  AMEX is a big advocate for their customers- the card holders.  And AMEX does not give a rat's ass for any merchant.  I was notified that all 4 transactions had been denied.  It took over 4 months of corresponding back and forth with AMEX.  In the end, I had to get a copy of the city parking ordinance, showing that there was no parking on that street during the winter, and send it to them.  After 4 months, I finally collected the money from AMEX for all 4 tows.  AND I NEVER ACCEPTED THE AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD FOR ANYTHING EVER AGAIN. I never had any issues with MasterCard, VISA, or the Discover card.  But the people who run AMEX are scumbags.

  8. When Swoop got up and running a couple of years ago, and we were working out the rates, they priced a fuel delivery call the same as a jump start, a flat tire, and a lockout.  When I asked about who pays for the fuel, I was told that the cost of fuel was all-inclusive in the call.  In other words, I was expected to provide fuel to the customer at no cost when it was appropriate.  But they would not pay me for that fuel.  The last conversation that I had about it changed nothing.  So I make all Swoop customers pay for the fuel.

Speaking of fuel, what are you all doing to cope with the rising cost of fuel?  I raised the fee that I charge people who request road service and tows and pay for the service themselves.  I went up an added $20 per call across the board.  I had not gone up on my cash call prices in several years.  I fear that the price of fuel is not done going up.  Anytime that I have approached a motor club about coming up with some extra coinage to take the edge off of higher fuel prices, I have been told to get lost.  For now, I think that will decline to send a truck a long distance for any motor club without a fuel surcharge.

Due to the accident damage to my fuel tank, I only put 15 gallons at a time in the tank of my flatbed.  The fuel tank got hit while back.  Despite the huge dent, it does not leak.  It was half full when it got hit.  And I do not fill it to the neck, for fear that it might leak.  I have a new tank, and all the other parts I need.  It is too tight to do a job like that inside the garage.  I will change the tank outside when it gets a little warmer.  A few days ago, I put in 15 gallons.  The next day, I put in 15 more gallons.  The price of fuel went up 40 cents a gallon overnight.  I expect that diesel fuel will cost over $5.00 a gallon by next week.

  11. This is not a gripe.  I just want to make you chuckle!  I have carried the same 5 gallon gas can in my service truck for several years.  I have always carried $5.00 worth of gasoline in it.  The reason that I carry only $5.00 worth of gas is there are so many people that run out of gas, because they have no money.  And their motor club coverage doesn't cover the gas.  I can't bring myself to just drive away and leave them there.  So I give them the gas.  Anyway, $5.00 worth of gasoline in a 5 gallon can looks like spit.  When I take out the can, the customer can see how much gas there is in the translucent can.  And their reaction is always "That's it?  That's all I get for $5?  So I'm going to get a smaller can.  It's all about the optics!

  12. I have never done a payout for any motor club.  Agero has asked.  Nations Safe Drivers has asked.  QuestX has asked.  And the answer is always no.  Although I deal with Agero every day, I don't trust them.  I always think back to the day years ago when the ERS Motor Club went belly up unexpectedly.  I did a lot of business with them.  They were my highest paying motor club.  I billed them regularly, and they always paid me on time.  Until one day they didn't.  In the end, I think that they beat me out of about a grand.  We were notified of their bankruptcy.  But we were unsecured creditors.  So there was no money left to pay us.

Any time that Agero wanted me to do a call out of my area, they would offer extra money.  When I consented, I billed them the higher price.  And when I reconciled my statement the following week, I discovered that the extra money was scraped away.  When I complained about that, I was told that the extra payment was never properly approved, and the extra payment was denied.  And there was nothing that could be done.  They did that to me two or three times.  So I never agreed to handle an out-of-area call for them again.  Agero cheating us out of money is just a sport to them.  I try never to put myself in a position that they can cheat me anymore.  I have had situations that I was to pick up a secondary tow at a tow company.  The call sheet indicated that the charges were already paid.  I always call the tow company to verify that the charges have been paid before I go there.  So one day, the tow company said that the charges were not paid.  I called Agero to address that.  I was told to pay the charges myself, and they would reimburse me.  I refused.  And I declined to handle the call.  I am suspicious that they refused to pay the charges with their credit card like they said that they did, and like they always do.  Just remember that if the day ever comes that Agero goes belly-up, you will never see a dime of any money that you have paid out.  If I did payouts, I estimate that I would have about 5 grand in the pipeline at all times.  Maybe a check would drop out of the pipeline every business day.  But there would always be 5 grand in the pipeline.  I do not want to be Agero's line of credit.  I used to have a line of credit at a bank years ago.  I paid interest every month on any money that I was using.  My use of the bank's money wasn't free.

I had a call last night.  I think that the guy hit a huge pothole.  He broke the lower ball joint on the left front, the tire was jammed up into the fender.  And the car plowed into a snowbank.  The guy didn't want me to haul the car on the flatbed because he feared that the tire would damage the fender more than it was already damaged, which was a real possibility.  He wanted a wrecker.  Currently I only operate flatbeds.  So I told him that I would call dispatch and have them send someone else out with a wheel-lift. I called the Agero Vendor Hotline.  After 45 minutes of rotting on hold, I told the customer that I was unable to talk to dispatch.  And I suggested that he try calling himself.  It has been my experience that the customers get answered faster than we do.  So I left.  Finally, someone picked up the phone, after I rotted on hold for 56 minutes.  I explained the situation to the dispatcher.  She promised me that she would send someone out with a wheel-lift.  So I called the customer back, and told her that they finally answered me, and I set up the second tow.  The woman thanked me.  She said that she called USAA back herself, and they answered right away.  They also said that they would send a wheel-lift.  Evidently, no one sent anything.  I assume that the customer got sick of waiting, and went home.  The car was left sticking out in the road (it was a side street with no traffic), so the police towed it.  They are very difficult to communicate with.  They just don't care about their client's customers.  And they sure as hell don't care about us.

  14. I have never had so many requests to handle calls all over New Hampshire, and even in Maine.  I've had requests as far south as Provincetown, MA, which is at the very tip of the Cape, in case you don't know.  And as far west as Northhampton, MA.  It sucks that I field dozens of phone calls from them every day.  But I can realistically perform 8-10 calls, if I'm lucky.

Welcome to the 2022 NASCAR / IndyCar Racing Schedules and Results. All times posted are Eastern Time. As they say on TV, consult your local listings for the time and channel in your area. This information is obtained weekly from NASCAR.com, FOXSPORTS.com, Motorsport.com, WeatherTechRacing.com,  IndyCar Series.com, NBC Sports.com, and Jayski's.com.

Just to keep all the FOXs straight, when I make reference to the FOX Network, I am referring to the channel that they broadcast most of the Cup series races on, which is the same channel that they broadcast "The Simpsons", "911", & "911 Lone Star", etc. on.  The FOX Network is an over-the-air broadcast television network channel.  And then there are (FS1) and (FS2), acronyms for FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2, both of which are cable-only sports channels.  During the first half of the NASCAR season, all of the Xfinity races, some of the Cup series races, and the entire season of the Camping World Truck Series, will be broadcast on FS1.  Some practices and qualifying could appear on FS2.  And then you also have the FOX Sports App.  Got it?

And to keep the various NBC channels straight, when I make reference to the NBC Network, I am referring to the channel that you watch the "Today Show", "The Voice", "Chicago PD", "Chicago Fire", and "Saturday Night Live" on.  Most NBC Network affiliated channels are-over-the-air broadcast television stations.  As previously reported, the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) has ceased to operate, as of 12/31/2021.  In July, during the second half of the NASCAR season, NASCAR Cup series races and Xfinity series races will be broadcast on The USA Network channel, CNBC, The Peacock Streaming channel, as well as the NBC Network.  Copy that?

The 60th running of the 24 Hours of Rolex at Daytona will begin on January 29, 2022.  Here's the television broadcasting schedule.  Pay attention.  It's complicated.  On air coverage for Rolex will begin on Saturday, January 29th, at 1:30pm on the NBC Network.  Broadcast coverage moves to Peacock @ 2:30pm.  Then, broadcast coverage moves to the USA Network channel @ 4:00pm.  At 7:00pm, the broadcast coverage moves back to Peacock.  At 10:00pm, the broadcast coverage moves back to the USA Network channel.  At 3:00am on Sunday morning, the coverage moves back to Peacock again.  At 6:00am, the coverage moves back to the USA Network channel.  And at 12:00noon, the coverage returns to the NBC Network, with coverage concluding at 2:00pm.  Happy Motoring!

This year, The Busch Light Clash will be held at The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, in Los Angeles, CA.  The Coliseum has been transformed from green grass to asphalt pavement.

The 64th running of the Daytona 500 will be on Sunday, 02/20/2022, @ 2:30pm, on the FOX Network and the FOX Sports App.

And in the world of Horse Racing......THE 2022 TRIPLE CROWN:

The 148th Running of the Kentucky Derby will take place on 05/07/2022.

The 147th Running of The Preakness Stakes will take place on 05/21/2022.

The 154th Running of The Belmont Stakes will take place on 06/11/2022.

The 106th Running of The Indianapolis 500 will be on Sunday, 05/29/2022.  Television coverage starts @ 11:00am- on the NBC Network, The NBC Sports App, and streaming on Peacock- @ The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Speedway, IN.

SRX Racing returns in 2022 for Season 2 on The CBS Television Network- and streaming on Paramount+.

Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) and CBS Sports have announced the 2022 schedule and tracks for the six-race, short-track series returning to prime time Saturday nights this summer for the second season on CBS starting Saturday, June 18 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola. Races will air on six consecutive Saturday nights at 8:00 PM, ET on CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+ throughout the summer of 2022.

Four new venues takes their place on the calendar for the series’ second season. After opening at Five Flags Speedway, the series will head to South Boston Speedway in South Boston, VA, then return to Stafford Motor Speedway where the series launched last season. The back half of the series will feature a return to the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway before a stop at  I-55 Raceway then the final and championship race from Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio on July 23.

“We had a great first year and now we’re looking to build off that momentum going into 2022 with a selection of tracks that blends old and new,” said SRX co-founder Tony Stewart.

“All the tracks last year delivered great energy, but we’re looking to spread that wealth a little bit this year. Stafford and Nashville are back, and they’re going to be joined by four new tracks – Pevely and Sharon for guys like me who love the dirt, and Five Flags and South Boston, two of the most prestigious pavement tracks around. We’ll hit some different areas of the country and deliver SRX to fans who might not have been able to see us in person last year.”

  17. I logged all Agero calls for a week.  I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish.  Meanwhile tonight, I received a call that is the furthest away from my base in Massachusetts, ever.  I forget the name of the town.  But it was in Michigan.  The call was dispatched to me as being in Andover, MA.  The name of the street was Nob Hill Circle.  There is a Nob Hill Circle off of Lowell Street in Andover, MA.  There is a house on that street that I service frequently.  The woman called me to ask about the call.  Imagine my surprise when she told me that she was in Michigan.  Imagine her surprise too!  She has been sitting broken down all day, unable to get service.  Don't tell me that the company isn't broken.

  18. In an addendum to the top of this thread, I always say that I get a lot of needless calls that are way out of my area.  I had a lot yesterday.  So today, I decided to write down every call that they gave me, and whether I handled the call or not.  From approximately 7:30am to 7:30pm, I fielded 37 calls from them.  Of the 37 calls, there were 3 calls that I received that were in my contracted service area.  And I handled them.  Plus there was another call in my service area that I gave an ETA for that they felt was too long.  They declined to give me that call.  At that time, I was handling 2 calls from another motor club.  Of the 37 calls, to the north, there was one in Eliot, ME., one in Exeter, NH, one in Durham, NH, one in Wilton, NH, several in Milford, NH, and other misc calls within a 50 mile radius.  To the south, there was a call in Milton, MA, which is just south of Boston. Another in Brookline, MA, just west of Boston.  Basically, the calls that i received were within a 50 mile radius of Lawrence, with about 1/3 of that area in the Atlantic Ocean.

I have complained about the needless calls before.  And I was always told to just refuse the call, and tell the dispatcher that the call was out of my area.  But during the night, every needless call wakes me up for nothing.  They don't have a problem with that.  But I do.

I think that I will continue this call log to tomorrow.  And tomorrow I'm getting my booster shot for Covid.

  19. I have a master plan.  I started in this business in July of 1972.  My father bought the first tow truck in that month.  It was a brand new 1972 Ford F-350 wrecker, which cost $5900.  I worked for him with the shop name on the doors for 10 years.  Right after I got married, in 1982, he transferred the towing rights to me because I wanted to do police towing.  And he wasn't interested in that.  And Tower Hill Towing was born.  So I am beginning my 50th year working on the road.  My 50th winter.  And Tower Hill Towing will be 40 years old in 2022.  My wife has been pressuring me to retire.  Although I am not in favor of that, I would like to slow down a bit.  But after getting sick last December, when my type 2 diabetes went off the rails, I feel a lot better these days.  And I'd like to keep working.  But I need to get rid of Agero.  There are more cons than pros dealing with them.  I keep thinking that I have hit bottom with them.  But yet we keep digging deeper.  I don't understand how they stay in business.  If their clients (car manufacturers, insurance companies, etc.) had any idea how badly they treat their client's customers, by letting them sit on the side of the road for hours, while they search for someone to help them, they would flush them down the toilet in a heartbeat.

Monday morning, I got an Agero call to tow a car from I-495 in Lawrence, to a residential address in Lawrence.  Basically a minimum mileage tow.  I couldn't find the car on the highway.  So I called the member.  The member didn't know where she was.  There was a state trooper present.  So she put him on the phone.  He told me that she was on the side of I-495 southbound in Westford- 18 miles away from Lawrence.  And WAY out of my area.  The trooper pleaded with me to come and get her because if I didn't, he would have to have a state wrecker tow it.  He wasn't about to start the waiting process for Agero all over again.  So I agreed to go.  I picked up the car, the member already had a ride waiting, and I brought the car to a shop in Lawrence.  I called the vendor hotline to give them the correct mileages.  I tried three times Monday, and three times Tuesday.  Rotting on hold on the vendor hotline for 45+ minutes at a time really SUCKS.  Finally tonight, the third time today, I got someone to answer. The dispatcher said that he would have to get the changes approved.  I rotted on hold for another 34 minutes, only to be told that they won't approve the extra mileage.  So they win again.  And the moral of the story is, I will never compromise with them again.  If the same call was to come in tomorrow, and it ended up in Westford, or any other far away town, the answer will be NO.

Next topic.  In another thread, I told you that back in August, I had damaged a Porsche trying to unlock it.  Even though I covered all surfaces that I would come in contact with duct tape, the tape wore through, and I put a slight scratch on the black plastic filler piece between the front and back door.  I expected to have to replace that piece, although the scratch was so slight that it wasn't worth bothering with.  I expected to pay a couple hundred bucks to replace that filler piece.  That turned into a $1300 damage claim.  Agero took it upon themselves to take that $1300 out of my check, without asking or telling me, rather than let me notify the insurance company.  If it was a couple of hundred bucks, I would have preferred to pay out of my pocket.  But $1300?  That's a bit much to swallow.  I honestly think that they didn't want an insurance company to scrutinize a $1300 damage claim for lockout damage.  That would have sent red flags popping up.  And there would have been a full investigation from the insurance company.  specially if I was contesting the claim, which I do.  And I had a big fight with the damage claims person on the phone.  When I contested his right to debit my check, he told me that when I signed my contract, I agreed that Agero could debit my check for any reason at any time.  I don't agree with that.  I think that's bullshit.  One thing that I have always contested is if you read the paperwork that they send you when you have a damage claim, they always say that they want the claim to be settled within 48 hours.  When you turn the matter over to your insurance company, it takes a few days for the claim to get assigned to an adjuster, and the adjuster to inspect the vehicle.  Agero does not want that.  But that's too bad.  It is what it is.  So why do they require a million dollar policy, if they won't let me utilize it?  They clearly screwed me here.  I always hoped that I could wind down my association with them in my twilight years, and just do road service.  But that seems unlikely now.

And finally, we all get a lot of calls that we cannot do.  Calls that are miles, and even states away from our contracted areas.  But I have never had so many requests to do calls that are out of my area, as I get now.  Far more than calls that I can do.  I stopped answering the phone during the night because the vast majority of these calls are in New Hampshire and Maine.  And I keep getting awakened for nothing.  Can you imagine traveling 50 miles to Kittery, Maine from Lawrence to do an out of gas call?  Is there anybody else besides me that doesn't trust them to pay us properly?  I only did a couple of calls for them today.  But I fielded almost 2 dozen phone calls from them that were way out of my area.  That company is broken.  I hope that they wake up and fix it before it is too late.

It will suck when I retire.  What will I complain about? LOL!

  20. The worst part about that $1300 claim is the damage claims person at Agero refused to let me notify my insurance company about the incident.  He said that they were going to take the money out of my checks, which they did, whether I liked it or not.  After forcing me to increase my limit to $1 million, they refused to let me use it.  The guy said that I signed a contract.  And it specifically states that Agero can take money out of my check any time they want to.  I signed no such agreement.  No one likes to make a claim against their insurance.  If it was a couple hundred bucks, I would prefer to pay out of my pocket.  But $1300 is lot to eat.

Meanwhile Stubborn66, when you do a lockout, always cover the surfaces that your tools will come in contact with duct tape.  I always do that, and I did that in the case described above.  But I worked it much longer than usual.  And the tool wore through the duct tape, making a tiny scratch on the filler trim piece.  Don't be afraid to use multiple layers of tape.  Duct tape is cheap.
