CHESTER, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Family and co-workers are demanding justice after a tow truck driver was ambushed while at work in Chester, Pennsylvania.

It happened around midnight Tuesday while 38-year-old Jamie King was working for International Recovery Systems, an automotive repossession company.

Family and co-workers are demanding justice after a Chester, Pennsylvania tow truck driver was ambushed while at work.

In surveillance video obtained by Action News, you can see the alleged gunman pull up, get out of a vehicle and open fire.

King was shot multiple times and remains in critical condition.

His wife, Nicole King, says he was shot in the stomach, chest and head.

There is a bullet in his brain. It caused a lot of swelling and they had to remove most of his skull on the right side of his head," she said.

King was sitting in his tow truck outside of International Recovery Systems, waiting for his next repossession assignment when he got out to lock the gate.

That's when an orange vehicle pulled up, a person got out and reportedly said a few words before opening fire.

"Over the last few years, this job has been increasingly more dangerous due to a lot of things. A lot of desperation out there. No car is worth this nonsense, to be so callous to attempt to take the life of a father and husband. Jamie is a great guy, a loving father and family member. Just to hurt a family over a car is so stupid," said Jeremy Cross, president of International Recovery System.

King tried to get away after being shot but he crashed into the building next door.

"He's got a long road ahead. He's gonna struggle. It's devastating. He's one of the hardest working men I know," said his mother-in-law, Lisa Dicola.

Chester police say they are searching for at least two suspects.

Thought's and Prayers are with this Repo Driver. Seems like this could have happened to anyone. Odd that it didn't involve a specific vehicle and it wasn't a robbery. Of was it a Robbery that went wrong? Repo types don't carry enough cash to be worth it.

Chester police have a person of interest in shooting of tow truck driver

Police also secured a vehicle from the tow lot after the shooting.

Chester Police Commissioner Steve Gretsky said Friday that police have a suspect of interest in the May 3 shooting of a man at an impoundment lot in the city.

Gretsky said the car that was impounded by Gretsky prior to the shooting was from Philadelphia.

Police also secured a vehicle from the tow lot after the shooting. A search warrant is being conducted on that vehicle.

Tow truck driver Jamie King, 38 was waiting for his next assignment inside the impoundment yard at International Recovery Systems just before midnight Tuesday when he was shot multiple times in the head and torso as he was locking the gate.

A surveillance video shows King at the gate when an orange vehicle pulls up and a man gets out from the passenger side, speaks and then shoots King.

King fled to his truck and crashed into a wall trying to escape.

The family has been devastated.

On Wednesday his wife Nicole told a reporter from 6abc.com she doesn’t know how her family will move on.

King has had multiple surgeries at Crozer Chester Medical Center where he was taken after the Tuesday night shooting. Surgeons have had to remove the top of his skull to attempt to reduce swelling.

Gretsky said King is still in critical condition.

“He’s got a long road ahead. He’s gonna struggle. It’s devastating. He’s one of the hardest working men I know, “his mother-in-law, Lisa Dicola told 6abc.

To help defray the thousands of dollars in expected medical bills the family has started a GoFundMe effort and by Friday morning it had raised over $94,000 with one person donating $25,000 for the family.

Friends and colleagues in the towing and recovery industry and motorcyclist riders have been supporting King in his recovery. They have held a number of rallies and drive’s at the hospital to show their support.

“Over the last few years, this job has been increasingly more dangerous due to a lot of things. A lot of desperation out there. No car is worth this nonsense, to be so callous to attempt to take the life of a father and husband. Jamie is a great guy, a loving father and family member. Just to hurt a family over a car is so stupid,” Jeremy Cross, president of International Recovery System said.

They let these criminals out with little or no bond and then wonder why they disappear. Bonds need to be appropriate for the crime and bounty hunters need to have an incentive to round them up. The police are too short staffed now, although sometimes they get lucky on a traffic stop. Cannot seek them out anymore and they may get shot or have to shoot. The law is messed up!
