Corey Reynolds

HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WTVY) - A Florida teen is dead after he was hit while changing a flat tire on the side of the road, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

It happened on I-10, westbound near mile marker 110, shortly before 8:00 Friday evening.

FHP said in a news release that the pedestrian was parked on the emergency shoulder, changing flat tires to a trailer carrying a boat. The teen was assisting as an employee of unnamed roadside service.

“The driver was traveling west, in the inside westbound lane of I-10, and appears to have traveled off the roadway and onto the rumble strips,” per the release.

The report lists the driver as a 41-year-old woman, from Alford, Fla.

The woman attempted to get the vehicle back on track, causing it to rotate in a clockwise manner as it traveled across both westbound lanes of I-10 and onto the emergency lane.

While entering the emergency lane, the car collided with the teen and the rear of the vehicle he was working on, leaving him deceased.

The Bonifay 18-year-old unnamed in the preliminary investigation report. Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate.

Tomorrow a Mother will bury her 18-year-old son. Corey Reynolds was struck and killed by a careless driver. He enjoyed what he did and went above and beyond to help anyone in need. I’ve listened to stories told of this young man, which brings tears to my eyes.

Tomorrow, Saturday-June 11th, 2022, 10:30am wrecker companies, service trucks, law enforcement and multiple other first responders will attend Corey’s funeral. It’s a sad time yet I believe Corey would be looking down with a smile. If anyone is in the area of Bonifay, FL or wishes to commute from afar, they are welcome. Traffic will be extremely congested due to the large number of trucks attending the service and funeral procession.

May God be with Corey’s family, friends and coworkers during this trying time.

The driver responsible for the 2022 death of 18-year-old Corey Reynolds was sentenced on April 19 in a Holmes County courtroom.

Melisa Dawn Jackson, 42, of Alford, pled guilty to vehicular manslaughter-DUI causing death to human or unborn child, and DUI with property damage.

On June 3, Reynolds was changing a flat tire while working on a roadside service truck crew and was struck and killed on the shoulder of Interstate 10.

Reynolds was standing behind his 2012 Dodge roadside service truck near mile marker 110 assisting with a flat tire on a truck that was pulling a boat.

Jackson was driving a 2012 white Hyundai traveling west on the inside lane and traveled off the roadway and onto the rumble strips. Jackson then oversteered the car back onto the roadway where it began to rotate as it traveled across both westbound lanes of the interstate and into the emergency lane. Jackson’s car then collided with the rear of the pick-up truck, killing Reynolds.

Circuit Judge Russell Roberts handed down a sentence of 10 years in the Florida Department of Corrections with a minimum mandatory four years, five years probation, a permanently suspended driver’s license, and Jackson cannot possess or consume alcohol.
