Driver crashes into Alabama State Trooper vehicle stopped along interstate

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WALA) -- An Alabama State Trooper avoided serious injuries Sunday when his patrol car was struck by another vehicle on Interstate 59.

Investigators said the trooper was parked off of the road on I-59 southbound near exit 89 in Tuscaloosa County. Troopers said a passenger vehicle driving southbound left the roadway and crashed into the back of the trooper's car and sideswiped a State Trooper SUV.

A tow truck driver was also struck by the vehicle. Both the trooper and the tow truck driver were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The person driving the passenger vehicle was not injured.

Unfortunately this type of crash highlights why changing the color of lights on a tow truck will be marginally effective at best. Sure, sober drivers will give more respect, but they are only a small part of the problem to begin with. The only way to really protect ourselves at roadside is a crash barrier truck or other similar technology.

I am glad the tower and Trooper are no seriously injured.
