Grand Prairie PD steps up enforcement of 'move over' law after tow truck driver deaths

The Grand Prairie Police Department is stepping up enforcement of a law that keeps first responders and other safe while working along roadways.

Tow Truck Driver Keith Holt was killed earlier this month while he was working a crash along I-20. A driver hit him and kept going.

FOX4 rode along with GPPD on Wednesday as it kept a watchful eye on tow truck operators working on highways. As one operator worked along a freeway shoulder, an enforcement operation was watching for drivers ignoring the law.

"It is a law, to slow down and move over for stopped emergency vehicles,” said GPPD Sgt. Eric Hanson. That law includes tow trucks, as well. "Slow down to 20 MPH below the posted limit or move over. They don't have to do both, but they have to choose based on their situation what they can do.”

Two tow truck drivers have been killed in recent freeway crashes. One of them, Holt, 46, was struck and killed January 5 by the driver of a white Nissan Altima who kept going. It happened while Holt was hooking up the car of a stranded motorist at I-20 and Great Southwest Parkway.

His 24-year-old son, Keith Holt II, hopes the stepped up enforcement reinforces the law and that the driver is caught.

"That’s a whole life. People are not looking at that. And for you to not stop after something like that happens, it makes it that much worse,” Holt said.

Grand Prairie police are still investigating leads in the case and trying to drive home a message – watch out for those helping on the roads.
