Gainesville, FL - A wrecker operator at a disabled tractor-trailer on Interstate 10 in Suwannee County was killed after being struck by and dragged underneath an out-of-control tractor-trailer Sunday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Wayne Alan Young, 41, of Live Oak, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, about two miles north of Live Oak. Young and Donald Jay Ross, 39, of Live Oak, were working on the disabled truck in the center median.

The driver of the moving tractor-trailer, Paul C. Moyer, 48, of Tallahassee, told investigators he was traveling east on I-10 when he lost control after being unable to adjust to the slowing traffic near the disabled truck. FHP said the tractor-trailer entered the median and struck both Young and Ross, who was thrown to the ground. Young was dragged underneath the vehicle across the median and the westbound lanes, officials said.

An FHP report said charges are pending.

On Jan. 1 Florida towman, Wayne Allen Young Sr., 41, may have saved a life when he discovered a young woman on Interstate 10 whose car had wrecked and trapped her for some time without anyone discovering her. When Stephanie Downour was found by Young, he helped her from her car, held her hand and prayed with the young woman (who was in excruciating pain) while they awaited an ambulance that would take her to have her very serious injuries treated. Last week Downour put a thank you in the Suwannee Democrat that called Young an "unforgotten hero." Young was so proud, he showed it to everyone.

Wayne Young died Sunday morning, the victim of a freak accident when he and a fellow wrecker driver were run over by a semi-truck in the median of I-10. 1-23-04
