Professional Standards: PTAO pushing standardized towing regulations in Ontario

Thessalon, Ontario — The Provincial Towing Association of Ontario (PTAO) has confirmed details of an accreditation program for towers and tow operators in Ontario, the province’s first standardized towing regulation.

Earlier this year, the PTAO board agreed to establish an accreditation program for towers and tow operators across Ontario. A series of recommendations were made in September 2020, after an open panel discussion with government officials and educational tow truck training company representatives.

“I have been in the towing industry for over 30 years and I cannot tell you how impactful it will be to establish an industry standard through our Accreditation Program for existing towers and tow operators, as well as for those entering the towing industry,” Said PTAO president, Mark Graves.

“Ultimately, we are looking to the provincial government to legislate the province-wide standards needed and to mandate the compliance necessary to regulate the towing industry.”

At the time of writing, Ontario has legislation regulating the distribution of towing licenses. It does not have professional accreditation for towers and tow operators.
