ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- State Police have confirmed with WENY News a trooper was involved in a four-vehicle accident on Interstate 86 Monday afternoon.

The accident happened around 2:45 p.m. about 1.5 miles West of Exit 56.

According to Sgt. Stubbe with the NYSP Troop E, a trooper was traveling Eastbound in the left lane headed to a burglary in progress.

A 4-wheel passenger box van was traveling the same direction in the right lane and attempted to transfer to the left lane.

The trooper then engaged his breaks to avoid an accident, and attempted to change to the right lane to avoid the van.

That's when Sgt. Stubbe says the van moved back into the right lane, striking the trooper's car.

The collision caused the police car to spin out and strike a disabled vehicle on the side of the road, which was unoccupied.

Police say the disabled vehicle was being towed due to a flat tire and there was also a tow truck on the side of the road.

That disabled vehicle then struck the tow truck, which was also unoccupied at the time.

Sgt. Stubbe tells WENY News, the driver of the disabled vehicle and the driver of the tow truck were on the side of the road at the time of the police car accident and had to jump over the guard rail to avoid harm's way.

There were no injuries reported.

Following the chain reaction, the driver's side door of the police car was pinned against the tow truck and the trooper had to exit the vehicle through the passenger side door.

The van did stop following the accident and police say there are no charges at this time.

The trooper was not injured.

Police say an investigation into the accident is going.
