Tow truck driver rescues man trapped under bus after crash

The crash happened late Thursday night at 35th and Capitol

MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee tow truck driver rescued a man trapped under a Milwaukee County bus after a crash.

Tony Evans, a tow truck driver for Always Towing, was driving along Capitol Avenue just before midnight Friday, when he saw a speeding car run the red light at 35th Street and slam into a Milwaukee County bus.

Milwaukee County Transit officials said in a press conference Friday that the driver of the car was going 100mph at the time of the crash.

"All I seen was a boom and the bus spin around in the air," Evans said. "I jumped into rescue mode."

Evans got out of his tow truck and ran to the scene of the crash.

"Tow truck drivers, I'm the one that comes to the scene afterwards. But this time I just happened to be here when it happened, and that was just horrific," Evans said.

Evans said he helped pull a woman out of the car, then noticed a man trapped under the bus.

"I grabbed the tow truck, put it on the back of the bus, lifted the bus up off of the guy, then pulled him out from under the bus," Evans said.

Now recovering in the hospital, the man called Evans to thank him.

"He said he just wanted to talk to me and give me a hug and thank me for saving his life," he said.

The area near the bus stop was littered with debris after the crash Thursday. Now, all that is replaced with a memorial remembering the person who died. Family members identified the man as Brandon Lewis.

"I would've tried to help him, but he was pinned," Evans said.

Evans is left wishing he could've done more, but glad he was able to step in.

"I don't feel like no hero or nothing like that, its just something that anyone would have did at that time seeing all that tragedy," Evans said.

On Monday, Evans is planning on visiting the man he saved from under the bus, in the hospital to wish him a quick recovery.
