Tow truck driver, 75, killed in rollover crash in WA’s Pilbara

 

The driver was towing a garbage truck when the tragedy unfolded.

A heavy recovery tow truck was hauling a garbage vehicle north on Great Northern Hwy in Marble Bar, 1500km northeast of Perth, when it was steered off the road and rolled just before 10am.

Behind the wheel was a 75-year-old man.

Police confirmed he did not survive the crash and died at the scene.

Authorities are now working to locate witnesses who saw the truck in the moments leading up to the crash.

Two people have been killed on WA roads in the first two weeks of 2024.

Truckie killed in rollover on Great Northern Highway, WA

 

 

A truck driver has been killed in a rollover in the Pilbara region of WA.  

 

The driver was behind the wheel of a heavy recovery tow truck, hauling a garbage vehicle north on the Great Northern Highway in Marble Bar, 1500km northeast of Perth, when the truck veered off the road and rolled just before 10am yesterday, January 9. 

Police confirmed he did not survive the crash and died at the scene. 

Tributes have poured in for the driver, who has been named as 75-year-old Graeme ‘Dusty’ Brown.  

Brown’s employer, Perth-based company Swan Towing Service, announced the tragic news that he had passed away in a post on Facebook.  

 

“Today we have been shattered,” they wrote.  

“It is with immense sadness that we advise of the passing of the one and only Graeme (Dusty) Brown.  

“Dusty was our Newman driver, and he was killed this morning in Marble Bar in a vehicle accident doing the job that he loved. 

“Dusty was a loyal, bloody hard-working driver, nothing was too hard or too much trouble. He was a true Pilbara legend.” 

The company offered their sincere condolences to Brown’s family and everyone who counted him as a friend.  

“Dusty touched the lives of so many in the Pilbara and beyond. RIP Dusty, you will be truly missed by so many,” they added. 

 

Other truck drivers have flooded the comments, describing Brown as a “an absolute gentleman” and a “one-of-a-kind character”.

“Legend of a bloke. Came to our rescue after we spent a long Pilbara night on the side of the road,” wrote James Hislop.  

“He was old school, one of a kind,” said Kristin Mirco. “Fitter than people half his age and loved to drive his trucks.”  

Police in WA are seeking witnesses who saw the truck in the moments leading up to the crash, or anyone with any information which may help with their investigations.
