TowForce
Eastbound traffic on Highway 46 was reduced to one lane outside of Shandon on Tuesday night after multiple vehicles, including two semi-trucks, hit cows in the road. According to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic incident report page, an incident involving multiple vehicles versus cows was reported in the area of Highway 46 East and Highway 41 around 9:15 p.m. Two semi-trucks, a Toyota Highlander, a Honda CRV, a tow truck and a GMC Yukon were involved in the collision, according to CHP Officer Patrick Seebart. Two cows were then stuck underneath one of the semi-trucks, which needed to be lifted to remove the animals underneath, according to the CHP incident report. One driver was transported to the hospital last night, and three cows were killed by the collisions, Seebart said. One semi-truck and the Toyota Highlander had to be towed from the scene of the crash, according to Seebart. As of last night, the rancher who owned the cows did not know how the cows got onto the road. He told CHP that tall grass growing around the fence could have concealed holes for the cows to pass through, according to Seebart. The cows also could have jumped over the fence, Seebart said. Caltrans tweeted at 11 p.m. that traffic was reduced along the eastbound highway to one lane due to the incident. The highway was fully reopened as of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
