One person was killed and two people were injured, including a Kentucky State Trooper, on Wednesday in a crash on Interstate 71 in Henry County.

The trooper, Michael "Mickey" Gonterman, was thrown from an overpass bridge and is in critical condition at the University of Louisville Hospital, according to a statement from KSP.

The person who died, who has not been identified, was pinned under the trailer of a box truck. The driver of the box truck was taken to Baptist Health Hospital in La Grange with injuries.

Gonterman was called to the scene on I-71 early Wednesday to help a person corral dogs that were loose on the highway, KSP said.

A vehicle had moved into the left lane and quickly slowed down. To avoid hitting the car, a box truck and a tractor-trailer driving in left lane moved into the right lane. The tractor-trailer hit the box truck, causing it to "jackknife" across both lanes of traffic and overturn on the bridge.

The trooper, who was walking next to the person on the right shoulder of the highway, fell about 30 feet from the bridge. The other person was pinned under the trailer of the box truck and died.
