Before we get to the story, lets review the history of this light bar.

In 2013 this was the design shown:

And here is a Story about New York State Police testing vertical light bars on cruisers

NEW YORK (WHEC) — The New York State Police recently modified the light bars on the top of their police cruisers.

The cruisers already had horizontal light bars that sat on top of them, but the new lights bars sit horizontally and vertically.

The goal is to make the emergency vehicles more noticeable, especially from a distance, so that drivers have extra time to move over, and obey the state’s “Move Over” law.

"It's incredibly dangerous on the side of the roadway and most of the people don't have any idea because they've never been on the side of the road and if they have it's only been for moments,” Trooper Mark O’Donnell said. “But the police officers, the fireman, the EMS people, it's their 8 to 12-hour shift is in the roadway or on the side of the road so give us a break."

For now, the New York State Police are testing the light bars to see if they make a difference.

The State Police couldn’t tell News10NBC how long they’re planning on studying the impact of the new light bars, or how much they’ll cost.

Once the study is completed, News10NBC will report the results.
