A rapid series of car crashes along the Gulf Freeway in Southeast Houston left one man dead and another man in critical condition Saturday morning, police said.

It started around 1:45 a.m with a hit and run crash on the Gulf Freeway, near the Cullen exit. The car that was hit stayed on the highway and was involved in a second accident. Soon after, a tow truck arrived to remove the vehicles from the freeway.

Then, a third car speeding down the roadway slammed into the back of the tow truck and swerved into another lane, hitting the two drivers who had been standing outside their vehicles exchanging information, police said.

The car hit the men so hard they flew into the HOV lane. One man died at the scene and another man was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, according to officials.

Following the accident, officials closed the southbound lanes near the Cullen exit. They reopened around 6 a.m.

Houston Police said they will conduct an investigation to determine if intoxication was a factor in the crash. If so, the driver could face intoxication manslaughter charges.

"That vehicle did stop, however that person, we’re taking him to JPC on suspicion of DWI,” said Sgt. David Rose with the Houston Police Department

No Further Details are available at this time.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A man accused of driving while intoxicated has been charged in connection with a deadly crash on the Gulf Freeway.

Lupe Longoria, 27, was arrested following the early Saturday morning crash.

Houston police say two drivers were on the Gulf Freeway exchanging information after a fender bender. Police say Longoria was reportedly speeding when he lost control and slammed his vehicle into the two men who were talking to a wrecker driver, sending one of them flying into the HOV lane.

Police say one of the men died at the scene and the other one was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to court documents, Longoria received a $100 bond.

We went ahead and posted this as the initial report was that the Truck Truck Operator and the Driver of the vehicle which was struck by a Hit and Run Driver were struck. The Video in the News Story states the drivers were exchanging information. However, if the first vehicle was a Hit & Run vehicle that would be inaccurate. We will work to get details as they become available.

I know we have a few members in a area of Texas, please update us on the status of the Tow Truck Operator in this tragic accident created by not only another Hit & Run by now a DUI Driver. Are Thoughts are with everyone involved in this tragic incident today.

This story was very confusing, since we have not heard any reports of either a Tow Truck Driver being injured or a Tow Truck Damaged. At this point all we can do is speculate using the details in the story. First Car is struck and that vehicle left the scene, a Second Vehicle Struck the First Vehicle and then the Tow Truck showed up. At which point the Tow Truck was struck and the Drivers of the First & Second Vehicles were struck by the Third Vehicle. Now were I was confused is there is a Fourth Vehicle and that is the Vehicle that Left the Scene. But, Why didn't the News story mention the Tow Truck Driver and Why have we not heard anything about this accident involving a Stationary Tow Truck?

The news article was poorly written. Through the years, I've found that Texas and Canada are really slow to release information regarding the deceased until they are well into the investigation. But, from the news video, I'm hoping that the person being loaded into the ambulance is the tow operator based on the look of his pants ... not to downplay the seriousness of him being struck, but the very fact that he is was not killed. It's nearing the holidays where these kinds of incidents are going to happen more frequently. We certainly don't need to add any more numbers to our count.    R.
