In October, Dustin Smith, AutoSmith owner, purchased the towing company from Dennis and Luci Liljenquist who owned the business since 1981.

“Dennis and Luci had a reputation for providing good service,” said Smith.  “I’d like to build on that reputation.”

Smith grew up in the McGregor area and attended Central Lakes College (CLC) in Brainerd for automotive technician and CLC in Staples to pursue a degree for diesel mechanic technician.

After earning the degrees, Smith worked in the automotive/diesel industry for a time. By January 2007, he was operating AutoSmith, his own repair business. He purchased a building in Ironton in 2012, adding onto it in 2015.  In 2018, AutoSmith expanded to add a shop in McGregor and now has a total of 17 employees.

With the addition of Dennis’ Towing, the company’s many trucks are able to cover the Aitkin, McGregor and Crosby/Ironton area 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Dennis’ Towing, which accepts AAA, can respond to changing tires, opening locked doors, moving stuck vehicles, accident towing and long-distance towing.

“We can haul everything from motorcycles to 18-wheelers,” said TJ Graves, towing manager.

Smith gives credit to his wife, Julie, and sons Oliver, Wyatt and Owen. “Julie has been so supportive of all these endeavors,” he said. He said he is also appreciative of all the support from local businesses.

The phone number for Dennis’ Towing remains the same, 320-684-2825.

“We understand the value of the customers’ dollar,” Smith noted. “We try to make it go as far as we can while combining big business capabilities with a small town feel.”
