A tow truck driver and a police officer rescued a man who was trapped and critically injured in his car that rolled over and caught on fire Friday evening in McHenry.

The McHenry Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 9:30 p.m. Friday for a report of a vehicle rollover with fire in front of the Dunkin’ Donuts, 4502 West Elm Street.

McHenry Police Department Spokesman Patrick Polidori said that a Nissan sedan was traveling eastbound on Route 120 when it rear-ended a second vehicle that was also traveling eastbound. The first vehicle then rolled over and struck a pole in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot.

The sedan caught fire and the male driver was trapped inside. A tow truck driver, with the help of a McHenry police officer, stopped and rescued the man trapped in the vehicle.

The man was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital where a Flight For Life helicopter transferred him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He remains in critical but stable condition.

A male driver from the second vehicle who had been rear-ended by the Nissan was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Critical Accident Investigation Team, which is made of several area police departments, is investigating the crash. Route 120 was reopened eight hours later around 5:30 a.m.
