lot of tension on that rope.....think he went over the working load limit..........

better look again didnt even squat the truck no more tension than pulling it out of the ditch or towing it on a sling,i think people have gotten spoiled by medium duty trucks,up till about 10 years ago people were using holmes 440s,non hydraulic trucks on lighter chassis than this 450 doing the same job,if you do it safely and dont overstress the truck as this particular recovery did not you can do it not much sense in having equipment if your scared of it,obviously the job was done proffesionally without fail by this truck as many others and its still in one piece with over 350,000 miles on it,just sold it for a 1,000 dollars over what i payed five and a half years ago truck still runs drives and looks like new proud new owner absolutely loves it,

thats a nice old ford,,,,,,, the new trucks are nice but the old workhorses are just that workhorses. Them winches dont know when to stop they want to work. Them winches some snatch blocks scotch blocks and common sense,, well forget about it anything can be done. My new chassis will be here second week of december an f-450 and my plans are to put a holmes 500 on that chassis. It may not sound normal but it will be one heck of a truck when done.

Danny back in the day (1971) my boss had a Ford F-500 with a Holmes 500 Town & Country. We used it to winch almost anything out of anything. looking back I feel sorry for that truck, but we never broke the wrecker. The wire rope a couple of times and even a chain. We had no training, no experience, but a good wrecker, so we survived. A modern truck with a Holmes wrecker will be an exceptional piece of equipment.

Hello Don, Yes them holmes 500's are awesome units. I think it will look sharp on one of them new style super dutys. The one I have is a 1971 holmes 500 big drum unit. The town and countrys are nice strange looking at first it looks like someone screwed up when building them but they are great units. I will probably have the only truck like it of its kind when its done, I think I will call it Half Vintage.

hey David...........whats squatting got to do with it..i see a single cable with what I'm guessing is a 8000# winch and a cable with a working load limit of around 3200# pulling a full size pick up maybe weighs in at around 6000# through the woods with a single line, no snatch block?......oh.....yeah.....like the stretch ya put on the rope when ya lifted the boom rather than let the winch do the work......but bottom line is you got it...good job.....now go change your rope....cause I'm sure you did others like that and i would hate to see you when the rope finally quits........

Leo, your on the right track, that is a singlr line that is by far past its limit. The only good thing is it was progagly older cable which Im sure the steel back then was alot better.

As for the older trucks, I have built two & sold them both. I liked having my 03 KW t300 w/ Holmes 600xl on it with Zacklift Z303 we made it all hyd.. That truck is the only truck in the area that would scale & was a workhorse. I am going to make another one as soon as soon as I find a good 600

I remember doing many a recoveries years ago with a one ton,,,but I sure don't miss them, inadiquate brakes, overloaded chassis, under geared, tire eating twin I beam front suspension, gas sucking big block motors, hard to keep cool,,,,,,,,,,,,,no I guess I really don't miss them,,,I remember when we got our first International medium duty ,,,also once we went to medium duties we have never owned another single line wrecker,,,,,nobody wanted to run the one tons anymore.Like my Grandpa always told Dad"You can handle big and small with a heavy unit,,,but you can only handle small with a light duty unit"On the recovery ,,Yes I would have put a block in it,but each to his own,,,that was sure putting that line to the test ,,,but we all have done it at one time or another(if we are honest about it). I appreciate you posting the old jobs,I like to see different ones.Don'tafraid to take a little critisism because on this board we all do 679.gif,,,696.gif Take care,Ed

Hey Scott, your right them 480s are nice trucks. There is a guy here in CT called me other morning. He has 2 wreckers for sale one is a 1980 k30 chevy with 480 and he tells me truck is mint like new. Have no idea have never seen the truck one owner one driver. I think that would be a great toy for you. The other truck was a 1973 f-750 holmes 600, that one I may go check out.

#1 ITS A 12,000 LB RAMSEY WINCH.GOOD GUESSING #2 THE SNATCHBLOCK WAS IN THE WOODS ATTACHED TO A TREE TO ROLL THE TRUCK BACK OVER SO THE SNATCHBLOCK WAS IN USE UP TO THIS POINT,AND AS FAR AS THE BOOM BEING ALL THE WAY UP I WAS LIFTING THE TRUCK OVER ALL THE OTHER STUMPS + DEBRIS THROUGHOUT THE WOODS SO NOT TO PULL AGAINST IT BUT TO PULL OVER TOP LESSINING THE WORKLOAD OF THE WINCH BUT YOU WERE NOT THERE SO ITS EASY TO SIT BACK +%+%% AND MAKE USUMPTIONS,YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT USUMPTIONS,THAT IS WHY I DONT JUDGE ANYBODYS WORK PERFORMED ON THIS SITE ,I ALWAYS THOUGHT THIS SITE WAS JUST TO SHOW WORK PERFORMED BY DIFFERENT COMPANYS,A LITTLE FUNFOR EVERYONE TO LOOK AT DIFFERENT THINGS DONE BUT APPARENTLY ITS A PLACE FOR SOME PEOPLE TO SCRUTINIZE OTHER PEOPLES WORK INSTEAD, I APOLOGIZE FOR TAKING THE WEBSITE THE WRONG WAY,IVE BEEN DOING THIS SINCE I WAS A KID I GREW UP IN THE FRONT SEAT OF A TOW TRUCK I AM VERY PROUD OF WHAT I DO AND MY CAPABILITIES TO DO SO AND JUST WANTED TO SHARE THAT WITH OTHER PEOPLE ON THIS SITE,NOT BE SECOND GUESSED ON HOW I PERFORMED THE JOB AND WITH WHAT I USED TO DO SO

If you post on this board you better be ready for opinions, nobody is trying to be rude just trying to insure some safer points for others, you do see some shady things on here from time to time and it is usually do to lack of training,,never be afraid or to stubborn to absorb information,,,you may get some use from it.I also was raised in this business but I also have learned quite a bit of useful knowledge from this site,,,there are lots of tricks to this trade,,,no offense but if you ever think your to good to learn,,its only because your to stubborn to listen,,,Nobody knows everything,,,,and in this industry we all can use safer and better ways of doing things. When fellers comment take what you can from it and let the rest roll off your shoulders, nobody means to shame you.Glad to see you on the board.Take care,Ed 659.gif

And if we can help save one person's life by our responses or our scrutiny then it's all good .
We all look at other peoples work and might have done it different ,Maybe even in ways we never thought of .
Education comes in many forms ,and this scrutiny is great because you have a million years experience here (and that's just that damn Hillbilly Riggs alone) to draw from .AND we hate seeing these Damn Tower Down notices .So chill and learn ,if ya got something to teach do it too .
Stay safe
