The Unofficial 2019 C4500/C5500 Silverado 4500/5500 Watch Tread

Recommended Posts

Ok... My first thread on the new board and I wanted to make it something memorable. So I decided I wanted an (un?) official watch party on GM's return to the medium duty market with what insiders are saying will be the Silverado 4500/5500 line.  Currently it looks like at least 2 trucks have been built, one regular cab and one crew cab.

I personally hope GM does something about the grille.

On a side note: I'll add pictures when I get that figured out...

I saw this at the Work Truck Show in Indy this week and I will work on getting the image up soon. I will say it sure does not resemble any 4500/HD I would have envisioned.

I guess you could say they "did something" with the grille!  It actually doesn't look bad overall.  I wish they could make the effort to replace the old 3500HD though with a nice GVWR on a heavy duty chassis but with "light truck" height and ingress/egress, the original point of the 1991-2002 3500HD's.

Interesting to me that they went with the old-style Kodiak/Topkick flavor using a regular truck size cab with a taller front end, vs. the Chevy Express/GMC Savana van body of the ones just before they bailed out of the medium duty market.

I'm happy to see 4wd is going to be available... But disappointed with no GMC offering, but I had heard that from the get go a year or so ago.

Wow, I was really looking forward to GM doing something great. But now finding out they joined with Navstar (the worst in the trucking industry) I have my doubts. I have 4 Internationals 2009 to 2012 and they are constantly in the shop. In the last 6 months I’ve spent $20,000 for a new 6.4 engine that only had 75k miles, and another one it was $4,800 for the braking computer. I’ll let others “suckers” be the guinea pigs before I think of buying one."

Going through that ordering sheet seems there will be 19500 GVWR on the 5500HD and higher on the 6500HD.  I see 25 gallon front and 40 gallon rear tanks, but I bet that rear tank is gone for a carrier with wheel lift install.  Everything gets the same 6.6L Duramax engine, but they have several different 6-speed Allison automatics.  I'm kinda bummed there's no gas option.  I'd love a 6.0 Vortec3 gasser with a manual transmission in a 5500HD rollback.

Guess I'll have to stick to buying up clean 96-02 3500HD's with 454 and 496 engines.

It sure is hard to beat 'em.  This new generation truck is no replacement for them anyway; it's just the new Topkick/Kodiak.  Can't go all the places a 3500HD can go.
