A proposed change to Mobile’s wrecker service ordinance was tabled by the city council on Tuesday after the director of public safety said there is a criminal investigation into possible price gouging by wrecker companies.

The council tabled the proposal for the time being, as the investigation presses on, according to James Barber, the city’s executive director of public safety.

“It started by looking into allegations of price gouging, and has now turned into a criminal investigation into several companies within the wrecker industry,” Barber said. “It is a criminal investigation at this point. We’ll complete the criminal investigation and come back and prevent this activity from happening again.”

Barber added, “We will come back with a solid ordinance that provides fair fees.”

Barber said the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office is part of the investigation
