AAA will again be offering its Tow-to-Go safe ride program for the Memorial Day weekend as motorists prepare to hit the road.

AAA says this long holiday weekend will see the second-highest travel volume on record since AAA began tracking holiday travel volumes dating back to 2000, trailing only the bar set in 2005. Overall, an additional 1.5 million more people will take to the nation’s roads, rails and runways compared with last year, a 3.6 percent increase.

AAA notes that this service is not available everywhere and is subject to change without notice.

For the following states, the Memorial Day Tow-to-Go Program is statewide and begins Friday, 5/24 and ends Tuesday, 5/28 at 6 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. In these states, motorists can call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246.

I participated in the T.O.W.E.D. program several years. It's all about marketing and the program itself is flawed badly. It's worthiness just does not equal the negative aspects of dealing with drunks. Tow Truck Operators rarely deal with intoxicated persons in relation to a tow and are not properly trained to do so. But, yet they are thrown out there to provide this public service. I have numerous stories about these type of tows which went wrong. may companies no longer offer the service as the marketing value has depleted. Any thought's

I recall a young tow operator (back east) who was beaten within an inch of his life during one those freebie tows when the drunk motorist went ballistic .. no thanks

Even though we have been a AAA service provider for over 20 years, we have never been dispatched by them for a "Tipsy Tow."

We did once provide a tow (discounted, but not free) for a man who had been at a local music festival with his grandson and decided that he had had too much to drink to be safe on the road. It was probably a good decision on more than one level, not only was he thinking about a safe trip home for himself and his grandson, but the Troopers were patrolling the single road out of the community where the festival was held and had already impound three other vehicles that day.

Back when I was with a light duty company that was a AAA provider, we did Tipsy Tow. We would get bombarded with calls during those days and it worked pretty well. The biggest issue that we encountered was that people were given a free tow of 5 miles or less home or to a hotel. Even though the dispatchers were very good at telling them the details, how rationally do drunk people think? Many people would get mad if we charged the extra mileage to get them home even though we discussed the options before hooking the vehicle. We only had 1 time when someone puked in one of our trucks so I guess that's a bit of luck. I usually ended up getting some good tips from those nights.
