1 In Custody After Shooting Of Tow Truck Operator And Carjacking

One man was taken into custody Friday following an early morning shooting of a tow truck driver and carjacking involving an Infinity Q50.

MIAMI, FL -- One man was taken into custody Friday following an early morning shooting of a tow truck driver and carjacking involving an Infinity Q50 that had been repossessed in northwest Miami-Dade moments earlier.

Detective Lee Cowart of the Miami-Dade Police Department told Patch that the shooting took place around 4 a.m. in a parking lot at 14735 NW 11 Court, which is about a block away from the location where the black Q50 was repossessed.

The tow truck driver, identified as 31-year-old Petr Cherepanov, drove himself to North Shore Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, according to Miami-Dade police. He appeared to have been struck by a bullet fragment.

Cowart said shots rang out of a gray Ford Fusion as the tow truck driver and his assistant were parked in separate vehicles.

The tow truck driver's assistant, identified as 23-year-old Cristian Fernandez, was not injured though his vehicle was also struck.

Cowart said that Miami-Dade police recovered a vehicle matching the description of Ford Fusion but detectives were still trying to determine the man in custody's involvement, if any, with the shooting.

"He's associated with the vehicle in some manner," Cowart explained, noting that the Fusion was recovered at NW 143 Street and 12th Avenue.

"We're still looking for the Infinity," Cowart said.

Police were asking for the public's help in locating the stolen Q50. It has a tag of KGX-E48.
