Ever pick up a piece of fruit — like a nice, shiny apple — and start thinking about how good it’s going to taste but then you take a big bite only to find it’s so tart it makes your eyes water and you spit it out? Oh, the disappointment.

I think some people are like that piece of fruit. They might look good on the outside, but when they open their mouths you find out what they’re really like on the inside. They have an opinion on everything, without knowing everything. Oh, the disappointment.

They grumble that it took so long for service, and the price. They take their frustrations out on the very person who is helping them. They have no idea what It’s like to be a tow operator working long hours, under stress, in all types of weather conditions. You want to tell them to please don’t say anything until they’ve walked in a tow operator’s shoes (or work boots.)

Every day the towing and recovery industry faces criticism from the motoring public. Many in the motoring public do not take the time to see both the inside and outside of running a 24/7, 365-day business. I think this is part of the problem of why motorists don’t move over or slow down when they see a tow truck and operator on the side of the road. They see only what’s on the outside and think we’re not in the same category as law enforcement, fire and EMTs. They don’t see the inside —that a tow operator is a human being trying to help someone stranded on the side of the road and — like everyone else — he or she wants to go home to their families each night.

The Wisconsin DOT and Traffic Incident Management Enhancement program produced a responder safety video that addresses the importance of safety in and around incident scenes.  Spread the word to the motoring public on how to keep responders safe. Ask them to watch the video at https://youtu.be/U47DReGXVOQ.
