Ting noise at takeoff

Okay my Ford dealership is still scratching their head. So I am hoping someone might have ran across this problem. My 2014 F550 makes a “ting” noise when you start moving both forward and reverse. They have had the truck in 3 times and have everything check or replaced in the entire drive shaft. I guess their next step they want to do is replace the entire driveshaft. Anyone run across this? I would like to have my truck problem free before winter starts it only has 58K. The noise started around 50k.and had a driveshaft replaced about 40K.

There was a service bulletin for some of the lighter duty rear wheel drive fords some time back which was supposedly resolved by placing a heavy grease in the splines of the yoke underneath the boot. Sounds like possibly a universal joint. Request that the dealership use the chassis ears and then test drive the vehicle. Was driveshaft balanced? I would also check to ensure that the correct universal joints were installed.

 

 Could be coming from the pumpkin also.

 

I really have a hard time trusting technicians today.  Just because you go to the dealership, it does not ensure that you are getting top notch work.

 

Ford does not require ASE certifications, they certify their people internally.

You know our '15 550 does the same thing. I could only guess it's in the driveshaft by the sound. But with 104k in here and no change in the noise not to worried about it. I do wonder what is causing it maybe the splines (no idea what that section is called that allows for suspension travel) in the last section could be my first guess.

I would confirm torque on the pinion nut & the trans/transfer case output yoke nut, one of those may be loose enough for the yoke to rock in the splines causing that noise which will transfer throughout the driveshaft & make it difficult to pinpoint source by ear..

It's a strange tink noise has done it ever since day one on the truck. Would think of the torque was not enough after 100k something should of went. But a good idea to check.

My 2001 F550 had done the same thing since new, thought it was just normal until I did the clutch at 50,000 miles & found the transfer case output yoke had play, torqued the nut to spec with loc tight & all is good.

Two things I do not have is a manual or a transfer case in this 550. But not a bad idea to check the output on the trans or the pinion on the diff.

The dealer should be able to print you a copy of the spec and or measurement for both from the workshop manual. If they can not fix the problem, request that they contact a field service representative. They also have a hotline where they can contact the engineers at Ford.

Once I have a slow day and the truck sits I'll be sure to look into it Mike. Im usually the main driver in it. But only hear the tinks when going from reverse to drive mostly in a situation where a hill is involved (needing torque) or a heavy foot is implied between forward and reverse.

I will definitely ask about the bulletin but imagine they should have referenced it already. Supposedly Ford rep is already involved. He is contacting Fleet Pride to see about another drive shaft. One thing that struck them as odd was the drive shaft was placed in opposite of stock. Is that common?

Lazy and lack of pride in ones work are very common. Please clarify opposite of stock? You need to request to speak to the field service engineer personally. They can give you a call. Ford also has a technical support hotline that the shop foreman can call to speak with an engineer to assist in resolving the issue.

Sounds like you are getting the run around .

Why was the driveshaft changed originally? If the noise was not there prior to the original repair that's where I would start, especially if the shaft was installed backwards, which is what I think you mean when you say opposite from stock.

I finally took my truck to another dealership in town after the first decided to stop calling me back. The noise is now gone, but I still am not completely satisfied. They put an permatex sleeve retainer to driveshaft front section yoke behind carrier support bearing. They say noise was caused by yoke shifting on splines. My Ford tech plus a reputable driveline shop says a heavy grease not an adhesive should have been used. The would not cover under warranty since it was upfitted. Even though it was Ford approved or at least that is what I was told. Oh and if the noise comes back then it would need to be sent out for driveshaft repair. Hoping the adhesive they applied does not cause future issues. 🙁

There was a campaign on some of the lighter duty vehicles that was using a gooey white grease like substance as a remedy for noise. It was squeezed into the sleeve. The kit also contained new clamps. Did you ever request that a field service engineer be consulted?

That makes sense it's in the splines just how the nature of the ting is. Funny enough after commenting on this thread some time ago it has stopped dramatically. I am the sole driver of this truck to so I know how I drive her.

It's like she can read my mind after all the miles we have had together....tear....

They just did it. Didn't consult me on using an adhesive for repair. I am going to the Ohio Show this week so maybe I can speak with a Ford rep there for answers. The Ford dealer doesn't give me a straight answer when I ask them if it is Ford policy to put adhesive on a drive shaft. Starting to wonder if I should explore my truck options. I have been Ford for the last 13 years maybe its time for a change.

No need to abandon on just this IMO. I would not abandon the chassis on just a small ting noise. I have 110k on the 15' I run. It has made that noise since day one with no change in sound or performance. At times it would go away I may not be listening for it when I do not hear it. The splines will always have a little play especially now a days when stuff is made with such tight tolerances.

Until I see many driveshafts blowing up or splines being stripped on a mass scale like the 6.0 and 6.4 disaster I have no reason to change chassis.

That is VERY true. It seems that Ford finally has gotten it right with the 6.7. They just need to figure out how to get people to stop putting DEF in the fuel cell.
