A man has died after his van and a tow truck collided in Sydney's south-west this morning.

Emergency services found the van driver trapped and critically injured at the intersection of Percival and Warren streets at Smithfield at about 6.20am.

He died at the scene a short time later.

The driver of the tow truck has been taken to Westmead Hospital to be checked and undergo mandatory testing.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Christian Holmes extended his condolences to the family of the van driver "in this difficult time".

"The driver of the van sustained critical injuries in this accident and I'm sorry to say, he couldn't be saved," Mr Holmes said.

"This school holiday period there are going to be more people out on the roads and we really urge everyone to take extra care.

"Stay alert, stick to the speed limit and take plenty of breaks.

"The weather of late has been very wet so it's important that everyone drives to the conditions, especially over the next few weeks.

"At the end of the day we want everyone to make it home safely to their loved ones."

Crash Unit Investigators are now examining the scene and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam vision to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
