Wrecker driver killed while clearing accident debris in Conroe

A wrecker driver was killed Tuesday when he was struck by a van while removing debris from a previous car accident on FM 3083 in Conroe, police said.

Stanley Schultz, 55, was taken to Conroe Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The van hit Schultz shortly after 7 p.m. in the 100 block of North FM 3083 as police were clearing another car accident in the same location.

Patrol cars partially blocked the eastbound lane of traffic and Schultz apparently crossed the road into the westbound lane of traffic to pick up debris. That's when the 2000 Chrysler van traveling east on FM 3083 hit him, police said.

The van apparently passed to the left of the marked patrol cars and the driver did not see Schultz in time to try to avoid hitting him, investigators said. Schultz also was not wearing a reflective safety vest as required by state law, they said.

Alcohol did not appear to be a contributing factor, but speed and other factors are still being investigated, police said.

The van driver and her 10-year-old passenger were not hurt. She was released at the scene pending the outcome of the investigation.

I thought it was kind of sorry to imply that it was his fault for not wearing a reflective vest. They didn't say if he was wearing an ANSI II shirt, which is allowed in daytime operation, but regardless people around here do not slow down for accidents and this is the result. Granted he should have been wearing his vest, but the story makes it seems like since he didn't it is his fault.

That is one thing I like about my area. When you are loading or cleaning the roadway, 99% of the time and officer is standing beside you watching traffic to ensure no one runs you over.
