A Stroll To Old St Louis...Powerstroke Swap

Recommended Posts

Friday morning @ 3 am, one of our good customers broke down in central Missouri pulling his car trailer. We made a few calls & had a fellow towing company get out to him right a way and got them (had his dog as well) to a service facility. He got back on the road later that day but had a problem again in St. Louis, 950 miles away. So Eddie loaded up the customer's other vehicle which was at our shop being serviced & towed it out there so they could get their trailer home. He is towing the disabled truck to our shop.

No it doesn't happen often. Most of "Long Distance" work is 100-200 miles...although when it's Long Island NY it feels like more. Most people don't want to pay the prime and we aren't the kind of company to work cheap like transport guys & what not. But if it's a customer of ours, we will go the distance needed to solve the problem. This customer never even asked for a price...just wanted to come home. We will work it out.

I told him I would try to get the sling bar closer to the truck but I guess it had a hitch there in the way. This truck has a goofy air ride hitch set up on it. I also would of put more weight on the straps but I always did tell them to load the chains on heavy stuff. This truck can wheel lift it from either end but my opinion was it won't get any lighter on the truck then if it was slung. He wanted to rock it coming home and it always feels better when you got weight on the steer...especially if you run in to weather.

Ask 10 tow truck drivers how to Short Chain and 9 will look at you as though you were speaking a foreign language. How I don't blame them for lacking a towing knowledge basic skill. Most operate rollbacks or auto-loads without a sling. However, just because my auto-load does not have a sling I do have a tow bar option. Though I actually prefer to use the stinger as a tow bar cause it takes far less time to set up. Then again mine are all really short distance tows.

Guess I am just an Old Wrecker Driver!

The MPL40 sure does handle things well on the sling.  I don't use the sling often, and many times I have our guys annoyed with the sling in the way for visability.  But, I have the sling on both of our MPL40s, because when you need it, its there.   I was in the same situation with this Dodge 3500 diesel, as it could have gone on the wheel lift.  I was taking it about 110 miles out to Chambersburg.  It made for a much nicer ride.  I don't have a ton of experience with the sling, an I really should pull it down and practice more with it.  But, I was taught by my dads uncle years ago.  He had been towing since 1965.

This truck had been stolen an involved in a police chase, where it became stuck far out in a field.  We recovered it for the PD an then it sat in the yard while State Farm argued over who was paying the charges.
