TowNews
A 77-year-old woman was killed Thursday morning when she was hit by a tow truck. Betty Pack Newton and her husband were traveling down U.S. 74 near Main Street in Mooresboro at about 11:15 a.m. when their car broke down. Living about half a mile away, Newton got out of her car with the intention of walking home or getting help. Her husband was still in the driver's seat when she stepped onto the four-lane highway and was struck by a tow truck that was traveling east on U.S. 74. The speed limit is 55 mph in that section of road, and the truck driver wasn’t able to avoid the collision, according to Trooper B.D. Theis with the N.C. Highway Patrol. “He did everything he could to try to avoid her, but he couldn’t stop fast enough,” he said. No charges have been filed in the incident.
