looking for a 24' rollback on a budget

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

As the title says, i'm looking for a 24' rollback on a budget. Here's the why of it all: I'm currently pulling my excavating equipment with a 1.5 ton pickup and a trailer rated for 15k lbs. I like what I have as it gives me lots of options but the more I mess with trailers, ramps, and electric trailer brakes, the more I'm looking at larger displacement trucks with roll-back beds that can handle my requirements.

I'm not looking for huge GVWR nummbers but I do need a 24' rollback. As little weight as I carry, it will be like driving the thing empty but that will be a huge improvement over stressing the engine and brakes on the 1.5 ton cab and chassis set up I'm running now. In short, (and please correct me if I'm wrong here), I'd rather drive a larger displacement truck with large truck brakes (and without the burden of the trailer) than push my current setup.

Specifically, I want to end up with something that is a manual transmission, I'd like to go with something used but for which parts are still available, and I want it to be Cummins powered. Not particular on what Cummins motor but given budget I'll be looking for an older rig. A Cummins 14L powered truck sounds good for my budget and my requirements but again I'm not set on that engine. I don't have a preference for 'medium' duty or 'heavy' duty truck.

This is all early times research at this stage but I want to have some info before I start going out and road testing trucks, etc. I would appreciate your insights. Thanks

You didnt mention what your excavating equipment weighs.. Keep in mind, Pulling weight on a spec'ed trailer is totally different than carrying it on your back.

Using a truck and trailer gives you the GCVW rating where using a roll back your dealing with Total GVW

PROFESSIONAL TOWING & RECOVERY IS NOT JUST A JOB.. IT IS A LIFESTYLE

I understand. My excavator weighs close to 6,000 lbs and the skid steer is close to 5500. Throw in the occasional implement and extra bucket and I'm at 12-15,000 lbs.

Your probably looking at a 33,000lb truck I would think

That would still be inside of the boundaries of a class 7. You think it's doable to do a 24' (or close) bed inside of 33k?

It would be to close for me.

yeah i guess with a right weighing 15K or so, adding another 15k of load puts it too close to the limit.

Just a few thoughts- (my opinions and thoughts)

1) Deck height - older ones I have been around - 4' give or take a few inches - under 13'6" here to be legal

2) Empty weight - I operated one that was around 19,000 empty on single axle  ( gas engine / steel hd deck)

3)Decking Steel = durable but not super friendly with steel tracks

Wood  - I like better for steel tracks but have broken /cracked had to replace.

4) Air brakes (possible CDL license over 26,000 gvwr here)) cheaper to work on than older hydraulics -
