  1. Get paid from Uhaul, but kudo's to you for helping a vet. At lest you made the effort to make sure he had a place to lay his head. It means more than a simple thank you for your service, to take time out of your day to help a vet. Thank you
  2. There will always be the ones that will undercut and you are right there seems to be an infinite supply of them, but there seems to be a new trend that tries to pretend they are a local provider when actually they are in other states or countries.
  3. I tried to look into these companies and meet dead end, I assume they are middlemen and/ or are dummy companies.
  4. Is anyone else experiencing a flood of towing companies when you google search "towing near me" ? I am in a small town in Ohio, and I know all the players in my county, most on a first name basis. But when I do this search I am getting ads/listings for "Buds Towing or Howards Towing or Premier, whose addresses are either non existent or at an apartment complex, but no wreckers or rollbacks around ( or seen, small town) Their phone numbers may or may not be local and are indeed answered and dispatchers try to separate the customer from the credit card. If the reviews are to be believed, sometimes the service is provided, but long arrivals and large charges are the complaints. Is this the next step in internet 3rd party towing, remote call center gets paid then tries to local tower to do call at lowest price and if unsuccessful just ignores customer.
  5. I can attest to 17 names of tow operators in 2023. Probably more that were not reported or counted but even at 17, that is too many. NTSB #s of 23, make towers a 75% of that number. Surely their numbers must be off.
  6. The 1 in 6 stats was for 2018, 2019 or 2020 I think either way it was when someone finally took notice.I am just glad to see the number going down, I will be happy when it is zero.
  7. Well I stand corrected, if the least you have sold a running car for is $1200 ( for a rotted out quarter million mile dodge) then you missed your calling, you should be a used car salesman. you headlined this post "seeking advice" i expressed my opinion/advice, I gave it even though it seems you dont really need it, your mind is made up, and rightfully so...if you are satisfied with your business model then good for you, take on the apartment complexes ppi towing there is money to be made in it.
  8. it works for you then thats great. If you have figured out how to make money off abandoned vehicles then you have done what most towers cannot. Abandoned vehicles take up time, space, resources and finances. It does cost to tow them, unless your or your employee work for free. It does cost you to store them, unless you don't pay property tax, lot insurance, or maintenance on the property . It does costs you to gain title, unless you have cracked the code to getting people to willfully and prudently give up title. It does cost to dispose of them, unless you relish the experience of towing the vehicle(again) to the scrap yard. After all that, the few you can resale (avg $1200 as you state) it still costs to make keys, unless again the keys are lucky enough to be there. and the time and energy and parts to get them clean, running well and advertised and dealing with buyers should also be taken into consideration. PPIs and Abandoned vehicle are not worth the hassle, in my opinion.
  9. I used to do PPI towing and patrolled properties, but ,as you said the rates for such work are not worth it, add to that the requirements you must meet according to the ordinance and the penalties (financial) for not meeting or allegedly not meeting I opted out. add to that ,as you state, towing abandoned vehicles at your cost and storing them 60+ days at no cost it just doesn't make sense to me.
  10. 1.Caller should not have identified race with police unless asked by police specifically , had no bearing on issue at hand. Not racist in my opinion, but not necessary 2. Dispatcher ( I presume) should not enter in defensive conversation ie " i have many black friends..." this just continues down that course and sounds defensive 3. Customer is upset about fees, this does happen, sounds like the tow company is charging fee for missed appointment as well as current one, not extrordinary in itself, even though she (mom) admits to making appointment . Proof of ownership cannot be determined via phone so one must "believe" them when they say so. BUT,maybe dropping one of the appointment fees ( even though it is justified) may de escalate the problem. 4. Dispatcher does and should listen to the customers story ,it allows him to vent, after , as he does in video, explain policy and fees, and if customer is still adamant, let the police explain their options.
  11. Best way to get a front wheel drive car pulled forward in a space out and to the truck. Properly lubed and taken care of they will last quite awhile
  12. Been using Collins for over 35 years, wore out a couple, but there is no better.
  13. I stopped doing ppi towing in 2016 just before the PUCO got involved and set new rules and rates, the 5 year review of these rules and rates is coming due in May 2023. I was wondering if any Ohio tower has been asked for input or if anyone knows if or when or how these changes will be instituted. I have added below the rule in question Rule 4901:2-24-03 | Fees for Towing and Storage. Ohio Administrative Code / 4901:2 / Chapter 4901:2-24 | Rates for Towing, Storage, and Retrieval of Motor Vehicles Effective: June 8, 2018 Promulgated Under: 119.03 PDF: Download Authenticated PDF (A) The maximum fees that may be charged relative to the towing of motor vehicles shall be the following: (1) If a motor vehicle has a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating less than ten thousand one pounds, any fee for the removal of the motor vehicle charged by a towing service pursuant to sections 4513.60 and 4513.601 of the Revised Code shall not exceed the reasonable cost of complying with the requirements of those sections, but in no instance shall the fee exceed one hundred twenty-nine dollars. (2) If a motor vehicle has a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating greater than or equal to ten thousand one pounds, any fee for the removal of the vehicle charged by a towing service pursuant to sections 4513.60 and 4513.601 of the Revised Code shall not exceed the reasonable cost of complying with the requirements of those sections, but in no instance shall the fee exceed two hundred sixteen dollars. (2) If a motor vehicle has a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating greater than or equal to ten thousand one pounds, any fee for the storage of the vehicle charged by a towing service pursuant to sections 4513.60 and 4513.601 of the Revised Code shall not exceed the reasonable cost of complying with the requirements of those sections, but in no instance shall the fee exceed twenty-nine dollars per day. 14. I am looking to send a couple drivers for training, looking for wreckmaster in Ohio but nothing scheduled for the rest of the year. Is there anyone else interested this year in sponsoring a class? Or any other suggestions for other classes, in Ohio? I am in SE Ohio (Athens Towing) but anywhere inOhio would be okay.
  15. no charges against the driver who struck him just because they were not impaired or speeding is ridiculous , if it was a officer, trooper or construction worker the driver would be charged with vehicular manslaughter. How many of us must perish before something of substance is done to stop these tragedies.
  16. I do not know if this is allowed, if not remove or relocate. I am in search of a low clearance (6' 4" ) short wheel base (60 cab to axle) wrecker. I have tried all the usual outlets to try to find and have come up empty. If any one has one please post pics, or if any one knows of one, please advise. I would prefer autoload but traditional wheel lift is okay.
  17. How much, equipment installed, soup to nuts... on say f35 superduty ?
  18. TowZone., When you're right you're right, I too am a big proponent of training, both in house and academic. I am not aware of a substantial economic advantage of association membership in advanced training courses or seminars, mostly a minute discount vs membership fee to get it. I send my guys to wreckmaster, after a year in service, at my expense. I actively search for any safety seminars near me or online and make that available as well. I am old school but not hard headed and an open to suggestions or advise from outside source, such as this site, or my drivers, or other professionals.
  19. You are correct, it does work both ways, or is supposed to. I joined my state association the very week I started my company, I initiated meetings among my competitors in my area and convinced most of them to join. I was nominated and elected into a leadership role for my area, and attended state association meetings regularly. For 10 years I attended, contributed, and voiced opinions, all to no benefit. My state association was more interested in the voices and opinions of the "Big Boys" companies established in major metro areas, or ones with dozens of trucks in their fleet, or the ones that specialized in heavy tows. They had little use for the voices of the majority of their membership, the mom & pop companies, the two to four truck operations, or ones in rural areas with older equipment, little use but for our membership dollars It has been 10 years since I stopped being a "member", most of the people I convinced to join also have fled the union, for many of the same reasons I suspect. Times may have changed and maybe administration of the association may have changed, but my experience of being treated less than equal or taken for granted has not.
  20. I have been using collins dollys for over 25 years, they have continued to improve their line, making them lighter, safer, durable. I have only used itd dollies once, (a buddies truck) and was not impressed. Will be continuing to use collins dollies, and their self loading mounts.
  21. just for my own curiosity, what are you getting per tow for copart,(

if you can answer without breaking confidentiality)

    1. CNGTOWING

      CNGTOWING

Hey, Mel. The pay varies for each vehicle by location. I won’t get too specific with the numbers but I utilize CoPart as an additional source of revenue. I have various service provider contracts, in addition to my own customer call volume. My goal is to building a monthly revenue of $16-$20k.
