Truckee tow truck drivers spring into action (CA)
Turbo4whl replied to TowForce's topic in Industry Headlines
Here is more, trains too. -
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission always had a couple wreckers like that for tunnel retrievals. You could turn it around in a two lane tunnel. For years they were running Cracker Jack cabs with screaming Jimmy green leakers!

TowForce February Membership Aniversaries
Turbo4whl replied to TowForce's topic in Tow411 Main Street
I'm still here. Back in the late 1960's Pop had a shop and two wreckers. A 1960 Ford F500 and a 1959 Ford F250 and I towed with both . Out of high school I started working for the electric co. on their fleet as a mechanics helper. They were using this 1959 Mack with a Holmes 750. Moving up they remounted the 750 on a 1971 Autocar. That is the truck I towed a lot with. (still looking for a picture of it) Years later I was working in the machine shop rebuilding hydraulic components and running the lathes and milling machines. More recently I found for sale a Holmes 330, very similar to the Holmes 220 that was on Pop's 1959 F250. So I started the quest for the correct truck to receive this bed accessory. So here it is, the day I brought it home on the back of my hobby wrecker: This 1956 Chevy 3800 is the perfect truck for the 1955 Holmes 330. Work in progress, will provide this old man a classic ride to the local car shows. -
Wes sells on Ebay. He has a listing for a '73 440. Ask him if this will cover your 1982 HP-440. Link: Holmes 440

Rare Find, 1953 White 3000 Holmes 750 Antique Tow Truck
Turbo4whl replied to TowForce's topic in Vintage Equipment
Wow, that brings back memories. When I started working for the Electric Co. they still had a few of those old Autocars. Cab high service body with a roof mounted A frame hoist for setting utility poles. Bed mounted Braden CL winch PTO powered from one of the two chassis transmissions. Oh, yes I am that old. -
Anybody still have one of these Indy jib booms taking up space in the shop? Maybe laying out back but not too rusty from 20 years ago? This would fit a NoMar 810 or 1010 wrecker. Have cash, thanks for looking. https://tow.photos/images/2020/12/26/imsc0144.jpg

Still here in Pennsylvania. -
Southeast Pennsylvania Hit and Run On Tuesday an Able Brothers Towing Operator was struck on Route 1. Some how he only ended up with 2 broken ribs, broken wrist and lots of pain and bruises. Many X-rays did not show any more breaks. Dave is in my prayers he heals okay. The attack vehicle never stopped.

Would you take this into a Riot Zone for a Tow?
Turbo4whl replied to TowZone's topic in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
That is beautiful artwork! Put some street tires on it and run it as my daily back and forth to work. Maybe that would keep the rice burners from cutting me off. The creator is very talented. -
Rear end and transmission for 72' C30 with Holmes 480
Turbo4whl replied to Sam Atkinson's topic in Vintage Equipment
Information you should know about PTO's and transmissions is that they are matched to each other. Yes many transmissions have the same mounting for the PTO but the PTO drive gear needs to match the different trans. Also the assembly arrangement can be different form one trans to the next. There are many different model PTO's as well. If you want to keep the boom operational with a PTO, a later model GM 5 speed would work. Look for one that has a PTO already mated. There would also be clutch modifications needed to use the 5 speed. -
Well after 50+ years, Hess finally has a medium/heavy wrecker truck.
-
I assume you found their site for information? http://www.truhitch.com/ I work on a fleet of utility equipment. When any of our heaver units requires a tow, such as our IH Paystar 5000 mounted with a 170 foot reach Bronto Skyreach, the towing contractor always arrives with their Tru-Hitch. The all wheel drive Paystar is very top heavy an just makes scale.

I would guess this one is out of your enjoyment range as well. I spotted it and though I'd post for everyone's viewing pleasure.

Was someone looking for one of these? Not mine and not cheap. https://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/d/rocky-point-vintage-tow-truck/6870166987.html

So I found the truck to mount the Holmes 330 on. 1956 3800 (1 ton). Like the old Holmes unit this truck needs work too, but it is very original.
-
Yes, I did buy two sheets from wiswilburn. Neither had a picture of the crank handle. I was hoping to make the crank look like an original.
-
Thank you for the information. Do you have any printed literature on the 330? Now all I have to do is find a period correct truck to install it in.

The previous owner power sanded or brushed the paint off the ID plate. If the bottom most number is the serial number, very hard to read is: VT2-717 Can you date this unit from the serial number?
