  1. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two people were arrested after one of them allegedly pointed a gun at a tow truck driver in Colorado Springs Wednesday evening, and police say another driver reported a similar incident a few days earlier.

Police said around 10:30 p.m., they got a call about a man pointing a rifle at a tow truck driver on Half Turn Road, which is just south of Academy Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway. The suspect was driving a silver Chrysler sedan, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found the car in a nearby apartment parking lot. Four people were inside the car at the time, and two of them were arrested on suspicion of various weapons-related offenses.

Police said they also found two handguns and a rifle inside the car.

Police said another driver from the same tow truck company reported a similar incident a few days earlier. Anyone else who has been a victim of a similar crime is asked to report it to police at 719-444-7000.

  2. Sister: Tow truck driver towed killer’s car 3 years ago

Patrick Sanford was gunned down while moving vehicles at an apartment complex in Hillsboro

HILLSBORO, Ore. (KOIN) — A family is in mourning after a tow truck driver was shot and killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex where he was called to remove some vehicles.

Erin Fitzgerald was driving to work on Thursday morning when she received news that her brother, Patrick Sanford, had been shot. Hillsboro police said Sanford was one of two tow truck drivers tasked with moving vehicles parked at the apartment complex on SE 44th Avenue to the street a short distance away so that crews could restripe the parking lot.

But a tenant got into a disagreement with Sanford. It led to yelling, followed by gunfire.

Fitzgerald told KOIN 6 News her brother, who had owned his tow truck business for nearly 20 years, was just doing his job.

“He saw the man come out and get angry and bang on the tow truck,” she said. “And then the man went away and everybody thought he was leaving. And then he came back with the gun after Patrick got in his truck and walked up to the truck and shot him.”

Fitzgerald said her brother was shot three times in the chest.

Police arrested 42-year-old Matthew McAdoo the same day. He faces 2nd-degree murder charges.

“Apparently, this man knew my brother as a guy who towed his car away three years ago and he came out yelling at Patrick that he had damaged the alignment on his car three years ago. And that’s why he shot him,” Fitzgerald said. “I don’t know somebody like that. I sure hope they can find a way to find some kind of peace with themselves. You’ve gotta be such an incredibly angry person to do something like that.”

Fitzgerald said her brother’s longtime friend and employee, Shane, was there.

“Shane ran screaming over to the truck calling Patrick’s name but when he got to the truck, he said Patrick was already gone. He said ‘I don’t know if I’ll ever get that out of my head,'” she recalled.

Sanford leaves behind his new wife and his 15-year-old son.

McAdoo was booked into the Washington County Jail without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 25.

  3. Law Enforcement Officials are seeing an increase in drivers failing to move over and slow down when they see flashing emergency lights.

RESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) -Law Enforcement Officials are seeing an increase in drivers failing to move over and slow down when they see flashing emergency lights.

Recently a volunteer firefighter in Washington County was seriously injured after being by a car while extinguishing a vehicle fire.

Officer Tyler Seeley of Presque Isle Police says that it’s important for people to move over so everyone is safe while they’re on scene.

“Just the importance is wanna protect either the police, the fire, the EMS that are on scene, the tow truck drivers that come out. I mean they’re right in the middle of the road just like us so everyone wants to get home at the end of the day and at the same time I mean if you’re driving through fast it could hurt you and at the end of the day the driver has to get home at the end of the day too.”

Officer Seeley adds that the fine for someone not moving over is $355. He adds that if you can’t move over, stop or drive by at slow, prudent speed and proceed with caution.

  4. Driver dies after crashing into tow truck on I-5

SAN DIEGO – A male driver died Friday night after crashing his car into a tow truck that had pulled to the side of Interstate 5 to assist another driver.

The crash was reported at 8:10 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near the Main Street exit by Barrio Logan. PORTLAND (WGME) -- Emergency responders are seeing a drastic increase in the number of drivers failing to follow Maine's "move over" law.

There have been a lot of close calls in recent weeks, and the Bureau of Highway Safety is asking you to take responsibility when you get behind the wheel.

First responders, law enforcement, Maine DOT and tow truck operators risk their lives every day responding to calls.

“What we’re seeing is people just completely ignoring it and not moving over and they have all the space in the world to do so,” Road Assist Services Operations Manager Kyle Snyder said.

  6. Impairment looked at as possible cause for collision that seriously injured tow truck driver

CALGARY -- Calgary Police Service is looking at whether impairment was the cause of a crash that sent a tow truck driver to hospital in serious condition and any witnesses are asked to come forward.

A tow truck was parked in the southbound lane of 11th Street N.E. in the Skyline East Industrial Park about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday and the driver had gotten out to recover a broken down vehicle.

A black 2017 Subaru Legacy, driven by a 28-year-old man, was headed south on 11th Street N.E., and collided with the tow truck, pinning the driver between the vehicles.

The tow truck driver was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition and was listed in stable condition Thursday morning.

The driver of the Subaru was treated at the scene by EMS and transported to hospital for precautionary reasons.

Police are looking at driver impairment as a possible factor and anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have seen the Subaru leading up to the collision, is asked to contact investigators at 403-266-1234.

"Tow truck drivers and emergency workers deserve safe working conditions while they get you the help you need, when you need it. As a driver, it is your duty to ensure the safety of those around you while on the road. Slow down, move over, watch out for us and each other," said Sgt. Colin Foster of the CPS traffic section.

  8. Police say three drivers without proper licences showed up to Highway 9 tractor-trailer crash

Caledon OPP laid 15 charges against tow truck drivers who showed up at the scene of a crash on May 31 without being asked and without proper licensing.

Tow trucks are bound by a variety of rules, both provincial and municipal,” police said in a news release.

Police said the crash was on May 31 on Highway 9 near Heart Lake Road. A tractor-trailer partially drove into a ditch, blocking most of the roadway.

An officer came across the scene minutes after the collision and arranged road closures and began the process of clearing the highway with tow trucks that arrived on scene.

While this process was underway, three tow trucks proceeded past the waiting traffic and parked close to the collision scene, police said.

Police investigated and allege that none of the three tow trucks held a valid Town of Caledon tow truck licence, and only one of the drivers held a Town of Caledon tow truck operator's licence.

The charges were laid under both the Highway Traffic Act and the Town of Caledon By-Law.

“They must hold a (commercial vehicle operator's registration), be properly licensed and equipped, be operated by a licensed driver, hold a local tow licence, and cannot attend the scene of a collision unless summoned by police,” police said.

Back in January, 42-year-old David Rios was relaxing at his mom’s house when he got a call from his dispatcher at Chappelle’s Towing in Vancouver.

There was a family with a flat tire on the shoulder of Interstate 5. Rios remembers: “Four kids, one adult ... on the freeway in a 2016 Cadillac Escalade. She did not know how to change a tire.”

He was about to put her SUV on his flatbed to take it off the freeway and change the time somewhere safe when a passing vehicle plowed into him.

“I’m pinned between two cars. I don’t know what’s happening,” Rios said. “But I’m feeling the hottest burning sensation. In my mind, it’s not real, it felt like a movie. And I’m being pushed across the ground.”

These days, his buddies are reluctant to ask what happened. They don’t want to pry. He says he can’t get the memories out of his head. They come in flashes: It’s loud. He’s angry about being hit, confused because he can’t seem to stand up and exasperated that cars continue rushing by.

Someone takes a belt and ties it around what’s left of his leg.

Today, he doesn’t handle loud noises well.

“It’s the boom,” he said, “the impact.”

But Rios wants to tell his story, because he wants drivers to slow down and pay attention when they pass a tow truck.

    CAN061621BB.JPG.2f788c7a4a2eacddc7c5cd46bd3f8b28.JPG

Five months later, state police are still investigating the crash, and Rios is adjusting to life with a prosthetic leg, relearning how to do basic things like driving and playing with his son. “Mentally, physically, emotionally, ... I’m dealing with it,” he said.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the risk of dying as a tow truck driver is 15 times higher than in other dangerous private industry jobs, such as welding and construction. And most states, including Oregon and Washington, require drivers to move over and slow down when they see a tow truck. But many people don’t, despite the threat of a $140 ticket.

“You get some people that are just in a hurry, texting and driving, not paying attention. Putting make-up on,” said driver Dan Carroll, who also works for Chappelle’s Towing in Vancouver.

Tow truck drivers say they with death and injury on a regular basis, whether it’s the motorists they’re dealing with, a pedestrian or someone in the tight-knit driver community. It’s an ever-present fact made more tangible by the location of their offices, usually on the side of a highway with traffic speeding by at 60, 70, 80 miles an hour.

On a recent ride-along, OPB parked on the side of Washington State Route 14 with Carroll to see how motorists react. A quick and unscientific count showed that less than half the drivers moved over during 20 minutes at the side of the road. Carroll thinks that’s because drivers just don’t regard him as an emergency worker.

“I’ve gotten into arguments with friends. They don’t think so, they say no because we’re not police, paramedics or fire trucks, I’m assuming maybe because we don’t have blue lights,” he said.

“But there are times when we get called first, before police or anyone else, and we get to the scene first. So I would consider us first responders.”

Legally, tow truck drivers are not considered first responders. But they are “emergency” responders — meaning they’re allowed to drive along the hard shoulder to get to an accident, and drivers must slow down and move over as they pass.

Carroll likes helping people, and he earned $70,000 last year. But the job is hard and dangerous, and it comes with a 12-hour day, five days a week, plus the expectation that he’ll jump out of bed anytime someone needs towing off the freeway nearby.

Carroll takes precautions, like wearing a safety vest and lighting flares when he pulls over. He’s cautious about using the flashing lights on his truck.

“People driving by go, ‘Oh, pretty lights!’ And they swerve into it,” he said.

Vancouver’s tow truck drivers have been particularly hit hard over the last six months. In addition to David Rios losing a leg, driver Arthur Anderson and two others were killed in April near Castle Rock. In December, Chris Amedio of Garza’s Auto Repair, caught a passing car striking the side of his truck on an in-cab video.

“I just got hit!” he screams on the tape.

He’s OK now, but thinks he could have died if he hadn’t jumped at the last moment.

“Towing fatalities are at the top of the list followed by firefighters, police officers and EMTs,” said Kelly Just, with AAA Washington.

She’s working with the Washington State Patrol and the Washington Department of Transportation on a new educational campaign called “Slow Down, Move Over.” She thinks the COVID-19 pandemic has made driving more dangerous with more speeding and distracted drivers.

“It’s the emptier roads,” she said. “Nobody was driving, so people thought, let’s see how fast we can go.”

A person wearing sunglasses stands next to a tow truck which has a vehicle lifted onto its flat bed.

Back in the tow truck, Carroll works quickly to pick-up an illegally parked car at an apartment complex. His head stays on a swivel as he keeps an eye out for the owner. He thinks this part of the job, enforcing parking rules and laws, is one reason people don’t slow down for tow trucks.

“We have a love hate relationship with the customers,” he said. “They hate us until they need us.”

Carroll’s buddy, Rios, is learning to walk again on his prosthetic leg. He doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to work as a tow-truck driver again. But he hopes maybe he’ll be able to find work warning new recruits about safety.

The fatal shooting is city’s 57th homicide of year

OAKLAND — A 43-year-old Auburn man found dead inside his tow truck that crashed into an East Oakland building Monday morning died from a gunshot wound, authorities said.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was found about 4:13 a.m. Monday inside his 2019 Ford F450 tow truck that crashed into a building in the 1800 block of East 12th Street at 19th Avenue.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, but Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s staff who examined the man’s body later discovered he had been shot.

Police said it appears the man was driving westbound along East 12th Street when something caused him to leave the roadway and crash into the building. Investigators shared few preliminary details, but did say they were not sure if that was where the shooting occurred or if it happened at another location.

No one else was injured. Police have not yet determined what the man was doing in Oakland.

The killing is the 57th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time, police had investigated 31 homicides in the city.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of suspects. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.

Tow truck driver fatally shot in Oakland is identified

The Auburn man was in Oakland on a repossession assignment

OAKLAND — A 43-year-old Auburn man found fatally shot Monday morning inside his tow truck was identified by police Thursday as Tim Nielsen, who was in Oakland on a repossession assignment, officials said.

But whether he was killed trying to repossess a vehicle or for some other reason has not been determined yet by homicide investigators.

Nielsen, the father of four children who was engaged to be married, was found dead about 4:13 a.m. Monday inside his  2019 Ford F450 tow truck that had crashed into a building in the 1800 block of East 12th Street at 19th Avenue.

It was not until his body was taken to the coroner’s officer that it was discovered he had been shot in the torso.

Investigators believe he was shot a few blocks from where he was found and was able to drive away before crashing.  Police have not said exactly where they believe he was shot.  No arrests have been made.

  13. man who was free on bond after being accused of firing numerous shots at another motorist in Spotsylvania County two months ago is back in jail after police said he fired a shot at a tow-truck driver early Thursday.

Devin Thomas Chewning, 20, of Spotsylvania was charged Thursday with attempted malicious wounding and reckless handling of a firearm.

According to Sheriff’s Maj. Troy Skebo and court records, the driver was attempting to tow a vehicle from in front of Chewning’s home in the 5600 block of Brentwood Lane about 1:50 a.m. when Chewning’s girlfriend came out to confront him. The vehicle apparently was not displaying the proper sticker to be parked where it was, police said.

Police said the woman assaulted the driver, took his keys and destroyed the key fob. Sarina Music was charged with assault, petty larceny and destruction of property.

Skebo said Chewning then came out of the home displaying a firearm. He fired a shot toward the driver before going back into the home.

A Mississippi community is rallying around one of its families after a Tylertown tow truck operator and his son-in-law were critically injured in a traffic accident Tuesday.

“Jeff Rushing and son-in-law Paul Coker were in a tow truck headed to do a pick up, as they had done together hundreds of times before. Jeff Rushing Daughter, Paul Coker Wife Posted this on her page:

Around 11:25 today they will be taking daddy back for his big rib surgery. They will plate them. They say it will take around 3 hours but also depends on how the person can tolerate it. We need it to go great and for his lungs to start inflating like they should. Pray for calm nerves for mama especially. Please lift him up during this time for prayer. We all know these two are still here for a reason! God isn’t done with them yet!

    UPDATED 06.11.21: 4PM EST

They were unable to do the surgery. I will try and update more later.

    UPDATED 06.13.21: 9PM EST

Both have had ok days. Paul gets very agitated when he wants to do something but can’t. He has another ct scan early in the morning. Please be praying there will be no more swelling.

Daddy is still set to have his surgery tomorrow, we’re not sure on time yet. He is resting well, his lung X-ray today showed they were still stable. Please please pray and pray hard he gets to have it tomorrow and it all goes well. We love those two so much and so ready for them to get better.

Thank you all for keeping us in your prayers, it means so much to us.

    UPDATED 06.14.21: 5PM EST

The doctor said that dad did good through surgery! They were able to repair the left side of his ribs and also placed a chest tube to help drain the extra fluid. He said that this should help him to start breathing better and work on getting the vent off of him. They are going to watch him over the next two days and then hopefully go in a repair the right side.

Paul’s CT this morning is still showing stable! He’s improving with each day and coming around to be himself( and if you know Paul Coker then you know what I mean lol). Please just pray for his patience as he has never been one to sit still very long.

Thank you all for praying so diligently!! God is so good and is healing them day by day and we can’t thank Him enough.

    UPDATED 06.15.21: 5PM EST

A week ago today our lives changed. Never in a million years did I think what happened would happen, none of us did. It kind of feels like we’re stuck in a nightmare.

They were on the way to pull out a concrete truck in Gillsburg when a car started coming into their lane so daddy swerved so he could miss them and that’s when it all happened. They were both thrown from the wrecker at some point and honestly we’re glad they were. I know everyone has seen it by now and if they would have stayed in it, they wouldn’t have survived. When I got the call I had no idea it was that bad.

Daddy never lost consciousness but Paul did and then was in and out of it. The first thing daddy was worried about was Paul and if anyone else was involved. That man will give you the shirt off of his back and will help someone anyway he can. And if you know him then you know just how silly he is too lol. And Paul is such a hard worker and anytime daddy needed him to go somewhere he was right there with him. If you’re good to either of them then they are that and better to you.

I miss my old Paul and he definitely is still there but it just takes a lot of time and patience with these kind of things. I wish I could take it all from them. I miss my “normal” life, and my kids, I haven’t seen them in a week. I’m hurt and sad... we all are. I’ve been having to stay in a hotel across from the hospital but thankfully mama can stay with daddy. We know your prayers are what have carried us through this far so please keep them coming. I will do an update this evening on them. We love you all

    UPDATED 06.16.21: 9PM EST

Paul Coker has been more awake today than he was yesterday. He still gets really confused but that has to do with the swelling still. Some things make sense he says and some things don't. I told him earlier that he has a head injury and we gotta get the swelling better. And he asked me how we gonna do that and I said with the Good Lord and a lot of therapy, and he said I’ll take it.

Daddy has rested most of the day. They tried turning the sedation off this morning and that made his blood pressure go up but they turned it back on and he settled down. Please pray for his pain. 15. VERDE VILLAGE - The quick reaction by a passing tow-truck driver stopped a small brush fire which was started when a pickup truck lost a wheel on State Route 260 near East Prairie Lane late Saturday morning, according to the Verde Valley Fire District.

VVFD firefighters mopped up the small fire after a couple from Maine lost the tire traveling in the west-bound lane.

The fire may have started by some of the sparks caused by the axle dragging on the ground, a spokesman said.

Fire departments have issued extreme fire danger warnings and believe that conditions are only going to get worse as the drought continues.

The tow truck driver used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire while it was still small in size, the fire department explained. No one was injured.

With Northern Arizona’s drought conditions, several fire departments, municipalities and forest agencies, including Coconino and Prescott, have issued Stage 1 fire restrictions to reduce the number of human-caused wildfires.

Two tow truck operators, attending to a broken-down heavy-duty vehicle, were killed when a second truck mowed into them on the N2 freeway near Umhlanga, Durban, on Monday night.

Kyle van Reenen, spokesperson for Emer-G-Med, said the tragedy unfolded at around 10pm.

“Reports from the scene indicate that a heavy-duty vehicle had experienced mechanical failure and had broken down in the area.

“While a towing operator was in attendance, a second heavy-duty vehicle collided into them.

“Two males believed [to be] from the towing operation were found deceased at the scene.”

Van Reenen said a truck driver suffered moderate injuries, was stabilised at the scene and taken to hospital for further care.

“SAPS were on the scene and will be conducting further investigations.”

  17. A 77-year-old woman was killed Thursday morning when she was hit by a tow truck

Betty Pack Newton and her husband were traveling down U.S. 74 near Main Street in Mooresboro at about 11:15 a.m. when their car broke down.

Living about half a mile away, Newton got out of her car with the intention of walking home or getting help. Her husband was still in the driver's seat when she stepped onto the four-lane highway and was struck by a tow truck that was traveling east on U.S. 74.

The speed limit is 55 mph in that section of road, and the truck driver wasn’t able to avoid the collision, according to Trooper B.D. Theis with the N.C. Highway Patrol.

“He did everything he could to try to avoid her, but he couldn’t stop fast enough,” he said.

No charges have been filed in the incident.

  18. Person Rushing to Aid Another Involved in Minor Crash Killed by Passing Tow Truck

A known person coming to the aid of a woman involved in a minor crash in Irving early Friday morning was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross several lanes of the highway, police say.

Irving Police said officers were working a minor crash in the westbound lanes of Texas 183 at about 7 a.m. Friday when a friend or family member of a woman involved in the crash was struck and killed by another vehicle while trying to reach her on foot.

Police said the individual parked their vehicle on the eastbound side of the highway and then ran across several lanes of traffic to reach the crash on the westbound side.

The person managed to cross all of the eastbound lanes but was struck by a tow truck while attempting to cross the westbound Express lanes.

While the person hit by the tow truck was known to the woman, police have not yet confirmed their relationship.

Police said the tow truck driver will not be facing charges in the fatal crash.

Several lanes of east and westbound 183 were closed while both crashes were investigated. Both roadways have since reopened to traffic.
