  6. Delegate Bob Long presented his wife, Rose Long, and Victor Appolonia, Jr. from Baltimore Towing, citations for their heroism for saving a family from an overturned vehicle during the summer. Both were driving through the area when they witnessed the accident in Dundalk.

Three people were trapped inside after the accident and gasoline was leaking from the vehicle. Victor and Rose had to force the driver’s door open so that the driver could exit the vehicle.

Rose assisted two children through the trunk of vehicle and continued to render aid to the passengers until the paramedics arrived.

“I saw the car flipped over and ran over to see if there was anyone still in the car. We started to pull on the driver’s door when we realized that there were two children coming out of the trunk area. We quickly helped them out and ran back to the driver’s door pulling on it, it finally opened, and a woman came crawling out,” Rose recalled about the event.

“We got her to her feet, I moved all three away from the car just in case in would have caught on fire or blew up, I assessed their injuries. A nurse came to render aid, I told her what I had observed, and she took over. I never did get her name, I hope that if she reads this, she will contact Delegate Bob Long’s office.”

Delegate Bob Long thanked both for rendering aid and said he is proud of their heroic act.

  14. Maryland State Police troopers are investigating after an AAA worker was struck and killed by a vehicle on I-70.

The man that was killed  is identified as Muhammad Shehzad, age 38, of Ellicott City. Shehzad was pronounced dead  at the scene by EMS personnel. Shehzad was a contractor for AAA, changing a tire for a motorist when police believe he was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. today, troopers at the Waterloo Barrack were  sent to the area of eastbound I-70, east of Marriottsville Road (Exit 83) for a crash. Responding troopers found two vehicles, a black Mercedes Benz ML350 and a white Chevrolet Express van, later identified as a AAA road service vehicle, parked on the right shoulder of the highway. A third vehicle, a black Chevrolet Colorado was located approximately 100 feet off of the right side of the roadway in a wooded area.

The preliminary investigation indicates Shehzad, later identified as the driver of the AAA road service vehicle was changing a tire on the rear driver’s side of the black Mercedes. As he was walking back to his vehicle, investigators believe he was struck by the Chevrolet Colorado.

Shezhad was wearing reflective clothing while he was working on the side of the road. His hazard lamps and emergency vehicle lights were also activated at the time of the incident.

Investigators believe the Chevrolet Colorado crossed over  into the shoulder portion of the highway when he struck the AAA vehicle and Shehzad. The Colorado continued to travel off of the right side of the highway, up and over an embankment and into a tree where the vehicle stopped.

The driver of the Chevrolet Colorado is identified as Peter Blakemore, 77, of Front Royal Virginia.  Blakemore was taken to the R Adams Shock Trauma Center by ambulance. He was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

All lanes of eastbound I-70 were closed to facilitate the subsequent investigation. The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded to conduct the investigation. MDOT State Highway Administration

personnel responded to establish a detour around the area.

“We are saddened to learn of the tragic loss of our contracted AAA tow truck driver, Muhammad Shehzad, who was on the side of the road doing his job changing a member’s tire,” said Richard G. Towner, Jr., Vice President, Roadside Assistance & Approved Auto Repair, AAA Club Alliance. “Our hearts go out to his family and others in the towing community who help people every day. We are grateful for Muhammad Shehzad’s service as a first responder. His tragic death highlights the dangers roadside workers face daily. As drivers, we all need an awareness of those working on the side of the road and act to create a safe space for them by moving over a lane ---when we safely can --to prevent possible tragedies.”

The cause of the crash has not been determined at this time. Nothing has been ruled out as a cause or contributing factor. All possibilities are being considered.

  15. Two charged with murdering Oakland tow truck driver during attempted robbery

OAKLAND — Two 20-year-old men have been arrested and charged with murdering a tow truck driver during an attempted robbery last June, court records show.

Aaron Hein and Marco Dragula, both of Dublin, have been charged with murder and attempted second-degree robbery in the June 14 killing of 43-year-old Tim Nielsen, an Auburn resident.

Dragula is charged with shooting into an occupied car and personally discharging the gun that killed Nielsen, an indication that police believe him to be the shooter. Hein is charged as a “major participant” to the homicide who acted “with reckless disregard for human life,” the criminal complaint says.

Nielsen, a father of four, was on a repossession assignment in Oakland when he was fatally shot during a robbery attempt, authorities said. He was found dead about 4:13 a.m. inside his 2019 Ford F450 tow truck, which had crashed into a building in the 1800 block of East 12th Street at 19th Avenue.

A police probable-cause statement says simply that Dragula and Hein were identified by witnesses, without elaboration. Both men are in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on no-bail holds, having been arrested Sept. 28, court records show.

Dragula has twice been charged with felony gun possession this year, in February and July. He was out on bail on both cases at the time of his arrest, court records show.

"The port is jammed full of containers with no place to stack more. The liberal media is blaming it on the trucking industry while the nation's store shelves are becoming bare... Well there's more to the story. Could Gavin Newsom and California's liberal trucking laws be the blame ?

The NEWS says the California port situation is caused by a driver shortage.

Not so fast: It is in part caused by a California Truck Ban which says all trucks must be 2011 or newer and a law called AB 5 which prohibits Owner Operators.

Traditionally the ports have been served by Owner Operators (non union). California has now banned Owner Operators.

Long term, truckers in California are not investing in new trucks because California has a law that makes them illegal in 2035. The requirement is to purchase electric trucks which do not exist.

And in the words of Paul Harvey, 'Now you know the rest of the story'”. ~ Don Helms
