Once again, I’m amazed at the Tow Times 2021 Shine ‘n Star winners. The graphics on these tow trucks are incredible, and they are rolling billboards for those companies. While I know the owners took extra care to paint, wash and polish their trucks before taking a photo and sending it in to the contest, I can see the pride they have in their trucks. Each truck shows the owners’ individualism and creativity in advertising their company names, and adding bold colors and stunning graphics of visuals like chains, the American flag, flames and pink ribbons. The grand prize winning truck from Hanna’s Wrecker Parts & Recycling features stars, and a graphic of the Bill of …

“How are you? How is it going?” People ask me this all the time, and my response is, “fine.” But am I really fine? Most often I’m tired, stressed and wondering where the day went. Life in towing is not easy. It takes a toll on your mind, body and spirit. The following poem is a great reminder to be easy on yourself, and maybe the next time someone asks, “how are you?” you might just say exactly how you are: happy, blessed, loved – so much more than fine! Be Easy on Yourself By Donna Levine “Our days can sometimes be very confusing. We seem to have too many things to do, too many problems to solve and not enough time to accomplish everything. We tend to forget that e…

From Geri Roskopf's Blog: I’m a tow operator, on my last call of the day. Thinking of what’s for dinner, whistling as I go out the door on my way. Pull up to the vehicle I’m going to tow, but don’t see the owner — not a good sign. Check to see if the owner is around. No such luck. Call the number. Will be back in five — said that would be fine. Waited and waited, 20 minutes go by. Asking my myself, “now? Really? Why? Owner shows up and throws me the key. Doesn’t say a word — not “hi”, “sorry,” or “here you go.” I shake my head, hook up, and do the tow. Check my watch — timing is not too bad. I…

Source: AAA news release: A new report finds unsafe driving behaviors, including red-light running, drowsy driving, and driving impaired on cannabis or alcohol, have declined in the past three years. Some dangerous driving behaviors have fallen more than others, with drivers still admitting to speeding and using a handheld cell phone, posing a danger on the roadways, according to new survey data from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Source: News release from the Wisconsin Towing Association to its members On October 20, the Wisconsin State Senate approved Assembly Bill 297, which if enacted into law, will create “Highway Responder Safety Zones” in Wisconsin. This is a major victory for emergency responders and tow operators in a continued effort to keep them safe when responding to roadside assistance or emergency calls. Under the bill, these safety zones would be initiated when roadside responders, including fire, police, highway departments, EMS or towing, are present and assisting at traffic incidents. Similar to current law construction zones, fines and penalties would be …

From Geri Roskopf's Blog: I was happy to see in the October issue of Tow Times with the results of the 2021 Tow Times Fleet Survey, It totally addressed some of the issues that have been on my mind. The percentage of companies having 2 to 4 employees was 37 percent, which included the owner, and 5 to 10 employees was 27.5 percent. These percentages give a good idea that a lot of towing companies are still mom and pop shops. It was interesting to see the percentages of what tow company owners were considering for their business for future options. The articled stated “About 46 percent are looking for an exit door, but another 40 percent …

I have my favorites, what are your suggestions? The image attached was taken at Mt. Vernon Restaurant which was located by the museum. Sadly, it is no longer there and event the old house it was in is no longer there. Does anyone remember it and did you eat there. I will add other restaurants like the popular City Cafe known for their cakes. If you have never been there, it's open 24 hours and a great late night bite. Huge Plates! Now what are your suggestions? Great Places downtown and on the other side of the river. Go... Oh, someone asked Bar B Q yes there is plenty of Barbq places. Microbreweries? Yes, there are a f…
