TAUNTON (WBSM) — A Boston man arrested in Taunton with a loaded illegal firearm has been sentenced to state prison.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn said it’s the third time in a decade that Alexander Harris, 41, has been caught with a loaded illegal gun.

Harris pled guilty to indictments charging him with carrying an illegal firearm (third offense) and unlicensed possession of a loaded firearm. He was sentenced to serve five to seven years in state prison.

The charges stem from November 4, 2017, when a Taunton Police officer saw a white Kia Forte stuck on the top of the Cohannet Street railroad tracks at 2:45 a.m. Harris was standing next to it. According to the D.A.’s Office, Harris had accidentally driven his vehicle along the tracks, believing it was a roadway, and the vehicle became stuck.

A tow truck was called to remove the vehicle from the tracks, and per the department’s tow policy, an assisting officer began taking inventory of the items in the vehicle. Police said Harris was calm and relaxed until the officer began to open his trunk, when he then began yelling to the officer that he had no reason to go into the trunk.

NEW BEDFORD --The Raynham man who struck and killed two tow-truck operators on Interstate 495 has been charged with two felony counts of motor vehicle homicide by drunk driving, a spokesman for the Bristol County district attorney's office said yesterday.

Daniel M. Cummings, 21, of 25 Quequechan Circle, Raynham was also charged yesterday with negligent driving and failure to stay within marked lanes in connection with the Feb. 20 crash that resulted in the deaths of Jarrod J. Drew, 24, of Brockton, and Timothy E. Kelly, 23, of Bridgewater.

Cummings was seriously injured in the pre-dawn crash and was released from Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston Friday, the district attorney's spokesman Joseph DeMedeiros said.

"It was a pretty elaborate investigation," said DeMedeiros, who declined to further comment on the specifics of the probe or the charges.

Cummings will be arraigned before a judge in Attleboro District Court at a date to be scheduled, he said. Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Garrett R. Fregault has been assigned to prosecute the case.

The victims were employed by A-1 Affordable Automotive and Towing in West Bridgewater.

Kelly's vehicle had broken down, stranding him along I-495 southbound near Exit 10 in Norton, state police said. Drew had arrived at the scene with a flatbed truck to help his co-worker. They were standing in the breakdown lane when Cummings plowed into them.

Drew was taken by ambulance to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where he died of his injuries. Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cummings was Med-Flighted into Boston with severe leg injuries.

State police initially said Cummings would probably be charged with a marked-lane violation and they were looking into possible drunken driving and speeding charges.

Cummings had five prior motor vehicle offenses on his driving record at the time. According to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, Cummings had a seat belt violation in 2000 and two speeding citations for traveling 10-15 miles above the speed limit in 2000 and 2002.

On June 13, 2003, Cummings was charged by New Hampshire police with illegal possession of drugs and alcohol. The New Hamsphire Registry of Motor Vehicles informed their Massachusetts counterparts of those charges only hours before the fatal accident.

"We just put it in his record yesterday," Massachusetts RMV spokesperson Amie O'Hearn said on Feb. 20.

Cummings graduated Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School in 2001. He is currently a sophomore at Bridgewater State College.

Thanks so much to the tow trucks for their support the day of the tribute. You really touched my family that day with your support, respect, and time driving on 495 past the memorial. Tim and Jarrod are smiling in heaven right now. My cousin was Tim Kelly and I can't tell you how devastated and sad I am. I am sickened over this pathetic, worthless drunk who walked away from this alive after he killed my cousin and Jarrod. There is no punishment worthy enough for me. I miss my cousin terribly and I just wanted to express my thanks and let everyone know he loved being a tow truck driver. He not only was a wonderful, caring, loving cousin but everybody's friend as well.

Its been about 5 months since my brother Jarrod Drew, and co-worker Timothy Kelly were both killed on rte 495 in Norton MA.

Daniel Cummings of Raynham MA is being charged with the deaths of both men, who worked for A-1 Towing in West Bridgewater, MA. Daniel Cummings had a blood alcohol level double the legal limit. However, he pleaded not guilty.

Not only is this kid pleading not guilty to killing my brother, and Timothy Kelly, he has the balls to ask for his license back. He will be in front of the Massachusetts Registry Of Motor Vehicles for an appeal at a later date.

In addition, We were told by the D.A. that this kid, who is obviously out on bail, probably won't go on trial until next year, after the holiday season.

This forum isnt necessarily the place for me to express my rage, but I'm sure you all can just imagine the immense anger I have. And you guys should be outraged too. As tow truck drivers, you guys put your lives on the line to help people in need, and when two of your very own were struck down, the state lets the murderer free.

I will keep you up to date as time goes on. I'm trying to figure out in my head what the next step to take is. To maybe raise some public awareness about the trial.

I thought I'd share the following.

Over the weekend, I started work on a "tribute video" for Jarrod, using some pictures I found around the house. I finally finished the project last night. If you'd like to take a look at the finished product, I included a link below. Take care & be safe. Ryan Drew

"On February 19th 2004, I turned 22 years old. The following day, February 20th, my mother turned 47. That also happened to be the day life changed forever. That's the day my brother Jarrod was killed.

At 3 am on February 20th 2004, my brother Jarrod, 24, was working for A-1 Towing. He got a call from a co-worker Tim Kelly, 23, that his tow truck had broken down. Jarrod left his house that night, never to return. Never again to relish in the love of his girlfriend of 5 years. Never again to see his 2 year old son play with his bike.

Around 4 am that morning, as Jarrod and Tim hitched their trucks together in the breakdown lane of rte 495, a 21 year old drunk driver recklessly murdered them with his vehicle. Tim was pronounced dead at the scene, while Jarrod died on the way to the hospital.

I think about him everyday. And not once does my heart not break.

I am a better person for having had Jarrod in my life. And I will not let him down. "

This is certainly the place for your voice, we are fortunate enough that a family member effected by such a tragic event is among our towing family. Keeping us up to date concern and your loss in the forefront is of priority.

If needed I'm sure tow trucks will line the streets on the date of trial. A mass showing of support, an out pouring of concern of the magnitude to make national news would send a clear signal that our brothers and sister deaths will not be forgotten. Keep us advised, as the trial dates are set. post them here and in announcements. Most importantly Announcements.

MILFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a 24-year-old Taunton man was killed when his tow truck crashed on I-495 in Milford late Thursday night, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Crews responded to the overpass at Route 16 around 11:30 p.m. and found the cab of the truck hanging off the edge of the bridge.

The driver suffered fatal injuries, state police said. A 20-year-old Berkley woman was rescued from the cab and taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the truck was driving northbound when, for reasons still under investigation, it veered out of its lane striking the median guardrail and coming to a rest up and over it.

The truck leaked fuel onto the roadway below but has since been cleaned up.

A crane was used to pull the cab back up onto the highway and the truck was then towed off the bridge.

Both roads have since been reopened.

	No other cars were involved.

State police say they are still investigating whether speed or inclement weather conditions were contributing factors.

Councilors Liz Breadon and Lydia Edwards have filed legislation to modernize and reform involuntary private vehicle towing and relocation practices in Boston. The proposed ordinance would establish standards for private towing companies, bringing into line practices of some companies that vehicle owners, public agencies, and consumer watchdogs have viewed as manipulative and predatory. The regulations come at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the ability of residents to cover essential everyday costs such as food, rent, and car payments, and recent studies have shown just 39% of U.S. adults could afford a $1,000 unexpected expense.

The proposal, Ordinance Regulating Predatory Towing Practices and Establishing a Towing Bill of Rights will be introduced by councilors Breadon and Edwards at the Boston City Council meeting on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at 12:00 p.m.

Standards established by the ordinance include mandating that towing companies publish and display their rates, accept payment via credit card as opposed to solely cash, requiring a photograph of the vehicle’s parked position before towing, providing itemized bills detailing charges and reimbursement for damages related to towing or storage. The legislation also prohibits tow operators from cruising or surveilling private property without cause, as an involuntary tow must first be initiated by a request from a private property owner.

Under the ordinance, the Boston Transportation Department would be tasked with proposing guidelines for “No Parking” signs for private property owners to provide sufficient notice of enforced towing. The department would publish and distribute a Boston Towing Bill of Rights to inform consumers of their rights when their vehicle is towed, how to recognize predatory towing practices and an unlawful tow, provide details on how to retrieve their vehicle and how to file a complaint of an unlawful practice. An annual report would be submitted to the City Clerk summarizing the financial statements of tow companies as reported to and regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities Transportation Oversight Division.

The ordinance follows the recommendations outlined in a May 2021 report by the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG), “Getting Off the Hook of a Predatory Tow in Massachusetts.” The MASSPIRG report identified existing protections in Massachusetts, including a maximum tow rate of $108, maximum storage rates of $35 per 24-hour period, notification of the tow company to law enforcement of an involuntary tow, release of a vehicle for an incomplete tow at a “drop fee” no greater than half the towing cost, and reimbursement for an unauthorized tow.

“Losing a vehicle, even temporarily, can have profound impacts on an individual and their family’s livelihood and economic stability,” said District 9 City Councilor Liz Breadon. “People who rely on their cars may lose access to work, education, health care, and social services due to an unexpected tow. We certainly need to get more cars off our streets and prioritize affordable, reliable, and accessible public transit and safer biking, but for working-class residents who have had to move further from accessible transit, having a vehicle could be their lifeline. We absolutely must strengthen our regulations to reign in predatory practices of bad actors in the towing industry.”

“Tow operators who cruise or hunt for cars to tow, without cause or first receiving a request from the owner or business, is just plain wrong and unethical,” said District 1 City Councilor Lydia Edwards. “Now is the time to outlaw predatory towing, when families can ill afford to be without their vehicle. These are common sense updates that would help fight back against an industry that is often seen as manipulative and unfair.”

“If passed, these new towing rules are important consumer protections for Boston residents and those who work in and visit the city. Under the best circumstances, getting towed is an ordeal, even when justified,” said Deirdre Cummings, Consumer Program Director for MASSPIRG. “For many drivers, however, the situation is compounded because the current consumer protections are weak and outdated. Preventing tow companies from only taking cash, requiring better disclosure of rates and itemized bills, requiring a photograph of the car before a tow, and preventing the practice of predatory towing are common sense yet critical consumer protections.”

PEABODY — Just as jury selection was about to get underway in Salem Superior Court Monday, lawyers for a towing company and the mother of a man who was decapitated when the car he was riding in crashed into the back of a poorly-marked flatbed truck, reached a settlement in the case.

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Daniel Walker was 31 years old and lived alone with his mother when he and longtime friend Michael Fowler went out for a night of darts and drinking back on May 23, 2013.

Over the course of the evening, which stretched into the early morning hours of May 24, 2013, the two men went to three different bars. As Fowler drove down Walnut Street in Peabody, he struck the flatbed Hino truck owned by Phil's Towing and Recovery.

Fowler, who later testified in a deposition that he'd consumed 27 drinks, pleaded guilty the following year and was sentenced to 2 1/2 to three years in state prison for manslaughter.

In 2015, lawyers Terry Kennedy and Scott Gediman filed suit against Fowler, as well as the towing company and the three bars — Courthouse Pub, the Swampscott VFW Post 1240 and the Salem Lodge 218 of the Loyal Order of Moose.

The suit alleged that Fowler had been grossly over-served alcohol at all three establishments in the hours before the crash — a "waterfall" of alcohol, Kennedy had called it. The suit also alleged that the tow truck, which was parked overnight on the street in violation of a city ordinance, had multiple safety defects including a lack of reflective markings on the rear of the bed.

By the time the trial was set to get underway this week, the three bars had reached settlements with Walker's mother, Diane.

Judge William Barrett questioned why the towing company hadn't reached a settlement. "I've seen this case before," Barrett told the attorneys, Jay Lynch and Ben Whitney.

Lynch told the judge that without knowing how much the other defendants in the case had offered as settlements, he did not want to negotiate.

Kennedy told the judge he did not want to name a figure and end up bidding against himself. He also criticized the insurer, Safety, accusing the firm of "not taking this case seriously," and offering "very tiny money."

"You two have been around the block 100 million times," Barrett told the lawyers, shortly before asking them to talk some more while court officers and a clerk collected and assembled juror questionnaires.

About an hour later the lawyers returned to the courtroom, where Kennedy disclosed that they were closer but not in agreement. The judge then sent the lawyers back out to a conference room. About 15 minutes later they were back to tell the judge they had reached a settlement.

Lynch, on behalf of the towing company, declined to comment, citing the confidentiality clause in the settlement,

"No amount of money can replace her son," Kennedy said outside court after speaking with Diane Walker. "Hopefully the amount of the settlements will send a message to establishments that they're going to be held responsible when a tragedy happens because someone was over-served, and a reminder for people who own commercial vehicles that are inherently dangerous that they have to be more conscious of the danger they present."

Less than a year before the Peabody crash, a Danvers man was killed while riding in a car driven by a Salem woman on Boston Street in Salem, when she collided with the rear of a flatbed tow truck. The two crashes were just a few short blocks apart.

However, lawyers for All-Star Towing were able to convince a Salem Superior Court judge to dismiss a civil lawsuit that was based on a claim that the tow company was negligent because the truck was parked in violation of a city ordinance. The Appeals Court upheld that dismissal, agreeing that the rationale behind the ordinance was more about aesthetics than public safety.

During Monday's proceedings in the Phil's Towing case, the judge alluded to that case and, prior to the settlement being reached, asked for more information.

A vehicle on Chestnut Street was being repossessed and the tow truck operator told police that a man came outside while he was trying to tow the car and threatened him. The tow truck operator said the man looked like he had a weapon in his hands.

Firefighters helped extinguish a fire involving six vehicles at a tow lot in Boxborough, Massachusetts, early Wednesday morning.

No injuries or structural damage were reported, according to police.

The fire at CBK Automotive Repair on Massachusetts Avenue was reported around 5:21 a.m., fire officials said.

Ken Carroll, who has owned CBK Automotive for 30 years, said he got a call from police as he was headed to the scene.

"The flames were probably about 25 to 30 feet," he said. "I'm glad that they kept it away from the building."

Once a firefighter himself, Carroll said he jumped into action to help Boxborough firefighters get the situation under control.

"I hit it with the dry chem and as soon as it killed the oxygen, they killed the water and foam," he said.

Fire officials said the bulk of the fire was knocked down by 5:54 a.m.

Caroll said six cars caught fire. All of them had been towed there and were already damaged from crashes or other incidents.

The CBK Automotive building and tow trucks were spared.

"I thought it was going," Carroll said. "But there goes 2020, you know?"

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Carroll speculated that it might have been a shorted wire or something similar. Police said they will be checking surveillance cameras to see if they can get any clues as to how the fire may have started.

This is one I ran across today and do not have enough information to forward on as a news story. It involves a Tow Truck and a AAA Members death from a gun shot. It is unclear if the tow truck driver was on the scene at the time of the shooting. Since this was likely a regional story perhaps a member has more info.

The Statewide Towing Association has expressed concern over the vulnerability of its members amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Drivers frequently come into contact with people without the protective equipment that other first responders have. But the organization has now received word that tow drivers have been given permission to receive the free COVID-19 testing at sites for first responders.

On Monday afternoon, Statewide Towing Association President Bill Johnson received notice from the Office of Public Safety saying that tow truck drivers with a Department of Public Utilities certificate and that are engaged in public authority towing are now able to go to the first responders testing sites.

The decision comes after an email was sent to Lt. Governor Karyn Polito.

“We are out here on the front lines and are the forgotten,” wrote Johnson. “I am sure you are busy, but I really did not know whom else to reach out to.”

The sites are located at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro and the Eastern States Exposition, home of the Big E, in West Springfield for testing if they show symptoms.

“I got confirmation yesterday afternoon,” said Johnson who has been working closely with state government officials. “We will be allowed to [be tested at the sites].”

Lt. Governor Polito didn’t comment directly on the decision but the Executive Office of Public Safety sent out a statement.

“As thousands of people are tested every day across the commonwealth, we are constantly assessing the demand, capacity, and capabilities of the priority testing sites in Foxborough and West Springfield,” said a spokesperson for EOPS.

Red’s Towing, Recovery and Transport in West Springfield covers the entire New England area, picking up stranded passengers that have had their vehicles fail, regardless of the weather, time of day or pandemic. However, the owner of Red’s, Gary Sheenan, has been increasingly concerned over the risks his staff are having to take on a daily basis.

The Statewide Towing Association was formed in 1970 by a handful of concerned towers to advocate for the Massachusetts towing industry. They have grown to represent 160 members across the state.

They have been able to supply 57 towing companies with masks, gloves and hand sanitizer who have asked for help on a case by case basis.

Red’s received two boxes of gloves, one box of 10 N95 masks and a bag of 10 bottles of hand sanitizer. This won’t last long with the daily pick-ups the drivers do and Sheenan has found it difficult to source this protective equipment from elsewhere.

“We’re pretty much left to fend for ourselves. Everywhere you go you can’t find anything you need,” said Red’s Operations Manager Ben Scott. “Even disinfecting the truck, the wipes are slim pickings.”

Sheenan expressed that he would buy masks, gloves and PPE tomorrow if he could but he can’t find it anywhere. He told MassLive that it’s all being bought up by the state for hospitals and other emergency services.

It has been reported by Roadside Rescue & Transport of off Massachusetts that they got one of the scariest calls for service that a Tow Truck Driver can receive.

To respond to a Motor Vehicle Accident involving a Tow Truck with the reports of the driver down !

Radio reports were that the driver was struck while outside of his truck servicing a vehicle. They stated with lumps in their throats their team responded to the crash involving 4 vehicles. The Tow Truck had been struck from the rear pushing it into the vehicle that the driver was servicing. The Tow Truck driver was hit by the Jack and thankfully only sustained minor injuries. While the driver that struck the tow truck was also injured.

The tow truck driver told police he stopped on the side of the road because of a potential issue with one of the vehicles he was towing.

HANSON — A tow truck driver was injured Tuesday afternoon when another driver struck him after he pulled over to check on the vehicles he was towing, police said.

Police from Hanson and Halifax responded to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian on Monponsett Street (Route 58) about 12:45 p.m.

Officers learned the victim was a 37-year-old Kingston man who is a driver for Bridgewater-based Chuckran Auto Parts.

Police say the man pulled the tow truck to the side of the road to check on the vehicles he was towing.

“While getting equipment out of a compartment on the side of the truck, a vehicle heading south clipped the driver,” said Hanson Police Chief Michael Miksch.

The tow truck, which had one vehicle on its flatbed and was towing another behind it, was “positioned partially in the breakdown lane/roadway,” according to a crash report written by Officer Billy Frazier.

“No dome emergency/yellow lights were activated on the tow truck other than two red lights on the rear roof of the truck’s cab,” Frazier wrote. “No signs or traffic cones were positioned in the area.”

The tow truck driver told police he pulled to the side of the road due to a potential issue with one of the vehicles being towed.

The victim was taken by a Halifax Fire Department ambulance to Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital with “what appeared to be minor injuries,” Miksch said. He was released later on Tuesday.

The driver of the car that struck him, a 59-year-old Halifax man, has not been cited or charged in connection with the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by Frazier.

LAWRENCE — Should you car break down somewhere in the Merrimack Valley, a strong-willed young woman may very well be at the wheel of the tow truck that comes to your rescue.

Roanny Colon, 33, started doing business a few weeks ago and has already started making her mark on the local scene.

A man at Walmart in Methuen was experiencing car trouble and noticed Colon's 2006 International 4300 ramp truck in the parking lot. When he saw Colon seated in the cab, he exclaimed, "Oh my! It's a girl!"

Colon recalled he was grateful, however, when she hooked up his car, loaded it onto her truck and towed the troubled vehicle out of the parking lot.

Colon, who does business as La Patrona – that's Spanish for "the boss" – has 10 years of experience in the towing business. She had a towing business in her native Puerto Rico, where she was also known as La Patrona, but Hurricane Maria put a rude end to it two years ago.

A wall collapsed on her tow truck and destroyed it. Colon, her three daughters and many other residents of Puerto Rico left the island and came to Lawrence and other cities on the mainland.

Colon had years of experience in her business, but she was in a new environment and needed help in making a new start. That's where EforAll came into the picture.

The E in EforAll stands for entrepreneurship. EforAll helps people who have the vision to start their own companies but lack capital and the knowledge of the intricacies of establishing a business, such as setting up a payroll system and obtaining a tax identification number.

EforAll has had considerable help from the Deshpande Foundation, which is led by Andover residents Gururaj and Jaishree Deshpande. EforAll has a program for those whose first language is Spanish called EparaTodos, with the E standing for emprendimiento, the Spanish word for entrepreneurship.

After her arrival in the Merrimack Valley, Colon was among 14 candidates selected for the 14-week Accelerator course, in which students learn "how to navigate the system," according to Andres Silva, program manager for EparaTodoes in Lawrence and Lowell.

EparaTodos has helped Colon deal with the "legalities of setting up a business," Silva said. These include acquiring a tax identification number.

The classes have also helped Colon promote her business. She has a website, a Facebook page and she's on Instagram. The official name of her business is La Patrona Services LLC.

Her husband, Giovanni Mercado, is a mechanic. He helps her keep her truck in top running condition, she said.

With winter on the horizon, Colon plans to expand into another field of endeavor that is still dominated by men: snow plowing.

WALTHAM, MA — Massachusetts State Police are investigating after local police sent them a photo showing a dog sitting on the back of a Waltham-based tow truck as it drove down Interstate 95 near Totten Pond Road. The photo was shared hundreds of times on social media.

"I am so sick to my stomach over this," wrote Stephanie Isaac, who was one of many who posted the image to her account talking about the dog, which appeared chained to the back of a Ramsay's Tow truck.

Shortly after, Ramsay's Towing posted a response on social media.

"We have just been made aware of the photo that is circulating on Facebook," " reads the post. "We do not support the drivers actions and he was terminated immediately."

But state police said they're working with the Animal Rescue League of Boston on the investigation and aren't yet sure who the dog belongs to. Investigators received mixed reports about whether the dog belonged to the tow truck driver or the person having a van towed.

Having an animal improperly secured does come with a fine, according to State Police spokesperson Dave Procopio. But the bigger potential question is whether this was animal cruelty, he said.

Investigators are looking into whether the animal was put in danger in such a way that meets the criteria for animal cruelty, said Procopio.

"It's immoral, it's not right to the animal," he said. "And quite likely illegal, too. And the Animal League and our investigation will determine whether anyone should be cited."

Mike DeFina, a spokesperson for the Animal Rescue League of Boston, confirmed the rescue league was helping with the investigation.

"But because the investigation is in the very early stages, ARL cannot comment at this time or speculate on what charges may or may not result from the investigation," he said.

Overall, animals being improperly secured in a vehicle is something typically handled by local law enforcement during traffic stops, so it's not a circumstance that the Animal Rescue League is directly involved with often, he said.

"However this is something that seems appalling and extreme and ARL Law Enforcement along with Massachusetts State Police will be vigilant in discovering the circumstances surrounding this photo and whether punishment beyond a citation is warranted," DeFina told Patch in an email.

When Jay Senior pulled his tow truck back into the yard at Early’s on Park Avenue to unload an abandoned blue Chevy van he was moving from a few blocks down the road, he got out to see something unusual.

“I got out and about 300 flies came out” of the van, Senior recalled, explaining there was a hand-sized vent on the roof of the van. “The amount of flies in the van was unbelievable. The front windshield was covered.”

As the flies cleared the van, Senior smelled something rancid.

“It was horrible,” he said. “It’s hard to describe, it was so bad.”

Senior called Worcester police, who made a disturbing discovery. There was a body inside the van.

Sources say the body was male and was stuffed inside a plastic container.

When the first officer got to the scene, he could tell there was something wrong, Senior said.

“The police officer smashed out the window on the passenger side,” Senior recalled. “And then they made the discovery.”

There were two plastic containers inside the van, according to Senior. One was sealed and the other contained tools, he said, adding that there were other items, including gas cans, in the vehicle.

Worcester police have described the death as suspicious. An autopsy was slated for Thursday.

Marlborough police confirmed Thursday morning that the van was reported stolen in that city on May 7.

The owners of the van let a friend borrow the vehicle more than a month ago, according to Boston 25 News.

The couple who owns the van told the television station they lent the van to a friend who then “disappeared.”

Irene Barry, who told Boston 25 she owns the van with her partner, Jim, haven’t seen the van in six weeks.

Barry told the news station someone besides her friend was using the van.

“I just hope it’s not him," she said.

Wishart said the arrest followed tips his department received after issuing a call earlier this month for the public's help in identifying a tow truck and its operator who was suspected of an assault on March 29 in town.

Salsbury was charged with seven crimes -- two counts of aggravated rape, three counts of rape and two counts of assault and battery.

"These incidents are still actively being investigated and other charges may be filed in the future," Wishart said.

Driver Seriously Injured After Head-On Collision With Tow Truck In Saugus

A 38-year-old Saugus man was critically injured after a Toyota Camry collided head-on with a flatbed tow truck Tuesday. Police responded to the intersection of Lincoln and Palmer Avenue in Saugus around 12:40 p.m.

Firefighters on scene used the jaws of life for 20 minutes in order to extricate the injured driver, the fire department said.

He was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital.

According to D&R Towing, one of their truck drivers was involved. The 57-year-old man from Hudson, N.H. was shaken up but okay.

The company said the truck driver had little to no time to react as the sedan swerved into his lane.

BOSTON (CBS) — A man in a wheelchair was not hurt after he was spotted in the Prudential Tunnel during rush hour Tuesday morning.

State Police said they received multiple calls around 8:15 a.m. about “a man in a wheelchair in the Tunnel/Route 90 west, at the bottom of the Clarendon Street on ramp into the tunnel.”

The incident was recorded on MassDOT surveillance video in the tunnel, showing the man in the wheelchair in the right lane, along the right wall as traffic went by him.

Eventually, a AAA Tow Truck Driver put on his hazard lights and shielded the man from traffic until first responders arrived.

I saw one car flew by and that’s when I was like ‘he’s going to get killed,” Waylon Mills told WBZ-TV.

The man, a 56-year-old from Boston, was transported to Tufts Medical Center for evaluation. State Police said he did not appear to be injured. His name was not made public.

Mills said he has never seen anything like this before in his eight years on the job.

“Nobody is expecting to see a guy in a wheelchair on the Mass Pike,” he said. “It was a push [wheelchair]. I saw him using his foot and hand to get it going.”

WEYMOUTH, MASS. (WHDH) - A typical work day took a terrifying turn for a Weymouth tow truck operator Friday, when a driver in the right lane got too close and hit his hand.

Christopher Rotz said his hand was clipped by a moving car’s mirror while he was helping a driver on Interstate 93.

“I got lucky but people have been hurt way worse,” Rotz said. “People decided not to move over, as usual, it’s very common.”

Rotz said the mirror went flying. He eventually picked it up on the side of the road.

Rotz said the breakdown lanes are a lot smaller because of the snow and he barely has enough room to load cars.

“There was a lot of snow. The breakdown lane is just about half what it usually is,” Rotz said. “My truck was already in the travel lane.”

Rotz said he had a bunch of close calls in the past but was never clipped.

“We all, as tow operators, definitely hope that people move over, definitely appreciate it,” Rotz said.

The company that Rotz works for said if he had been a few more inches to the right, he would not have survived.
