DAVENPORT, Iowa — Davenport police have arrested a man in connection to a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash that left a woman seriously injured.

52-year-old Granvell K. Ramey of Davenport has been arrested and charged with the following:

Serious Injury by Vehicle-Reckless by Use of Electronic Device

 Serious Injury Hit and Run

 Prevention Apprehension/Obstructing Prosecution

Duty of Driver – Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian

Use of Electronic Communication Device While Driving

The arrest stems from a March 13 vehicle vs. pedestrian crash in which police say Ramey was driving a tow truck when he struck a woman who had the right of way at the intersection of Rockingham Road and South Concord Street, seriously injuring her.

According to a criminal complaint, Ramey ran over the woman with the tow truck, causing injuries including a right femur fracture, pelvic fracture, left pneumothorax and multiple rib fractures.

Police say video footage from Ramey's tow truck and nearby businesses identified him as the driver of the tow truck.

Police say the video shows Ramey knowingly running the victim over, and then leaving the scene. Ramey conducted an improper turn at the intersection of the crash, with his tow truck not completely to the right of the center line while turning, according to police.

Video showed Ramey using his phone while driving just before the crash. Ramey deleted text messages and phone call records following the crash, according to police.

The incident occurred during a three-mile drive, in which police say Ramey drove at times with no hands on the steering wheel while using his phone and also committing several other traffic infractions.

Co-workers also identified Ramey as the driver. Police say Ramey admitted to driving the tow truck involved in the crash.

The pedestrian was identified as a 43-year-old woman. She was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. No update has been provided on her condition.

No other injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.

WEBSTER CITY — A Williams woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 35 near the 141 mile marker Wednesday night.

Joanna Rizzo, 51, Williams, sustained fatal injuries in the accident, according to the Iowa State Patrol. She was a passenger in a 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara driven by James Bergert, 58, also of Williams. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to crash reports.

Bergert reportedly sustained minor injuries in the accident.

A 2007 International tow truck driven by Anthony Nessa, 61, of Webster City, was traveling northbound on the interstate and while accelerating his truck, he was hit from behind by the Bergert vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation at this time. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and the Williams EMS assisted at the scene.

I am George Moore and my wife(Anita) and I own and operate Moore's BP Amoco, Inc. We bought the business from her dad 5 years ago. He had operated a full service station for 34 years, towing, repairs, car wash and fuel. When we purchased the business we remodeled the service bays into a c-store, updated the car wash and wreckers. We now have 3 trucks plus a service vehicle. One light duty 4x4, a med duty flatbed and a med duty wrecker. My wife works full time as a vets assit. and does a lot of bookwork for the store and towing. We enjoy country music, our kids,(2 boys 18 & 20),she loves to walk, and I love to spoil a walk after a little white ball.

Love this forum, I seem to learn something everytime I stop bye. How much easier it is to learn from some elses' mishap than to have it happen to you.

WASHINGTON — For 30 years, Moore’s Towing has helped the county during snow emergencies and snowstorms.

George Moore’s team consists of three employees and four tow trucks. Before a storm, they prepare the trucks by fueling them and making sure each is in good condition. The employees are on call when the weather is bad, Moore said.

The Washington County Communications Center will contact them when there are cars stuck in the street or disabled because of the snow, he said. Dispatchers will contact the tow trucks when there are vehicles interfering with plowing.

Moore said the day after the storm is the busiest, especially if there is a tow ban during the storm. They will get calls from private individuals when their car is stuck in a ditch or driveway.

On average, Moore said they will tow around a dozen vehicles during and after a snowstorm.

The heavy snow Washington had during the first snowstorm on Dec. 29 is much worse than the more recent light snow.

Moore said they have to be careful with the heavy snow.

Overall, Moore said the most important thing for people to do when they see a tow truck is to slow down and move over. If their vehicle is getting towed, it is best for the owner to be there with the keys.

My father in law Jim Munn and long time tower passed away 4-20-2020 from complications of diabetes and the covid-19 virus. He was 78 years old and had been in a nursing home for about 2 months when he got the virus. He was my mentor, boss, father in law, and friend. He left behind wife Oma, daughters Teresa, Anita, Dana, sons Danny and Russell. Four grandsons, and two great granddaughters. He was a very successful business man, father and community supporter. We had the honor to take his casket to the cemetery on our flatbed with an escort from our local law enforcement including city police, sheriff and rescue departments.

Hello from Iowa, I am new to the forum. I have owned my own towing company since 2009. We have 5 trucks in service now doing mostly retail and motor club work. I looked around the forums a bit and seems to be a wealth of knowledge here. I hope to learn a thing or two as well as share from my experience.

CLINTON, Iowa - A local tow truck driver is giving motorists a first-hand look at the perils faced in his profession with a harrowing cell phone video shot during a highway call.

"It's getting worse. There's so many distractions these days," said tow truck driver Tyler Petersen.

In the video shot last week, cars and semis are shown barrelling down the highway, inches away from Peterson while he prepares to tow a car.

At one point, he's lying on the shoulder of the road with a semi whizzing dangerously close. That semi driver then gives him the middle finger.

"In the video, I threw up my hands, the guy was flipping me off, like it's my fault I was almost hit by him," he said.

Iowa law doesn't mandate moving over for tow drivers, but police say it is a common sense, lifesaving courtesy.

"It's specific for law enforcement vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, police cars, but if you see flashing lights please move over," said Shawn Voights, Traffic Bureau Commander with the Davenport Police Department.

The 22-year-old has been towing cars for the family business for years, and says he shot the video to inspire others to think about the lives of tow truck drivers.

"People need to slow down and be more aware of their surroundings on the road. Pay attention. I'm not in hazard every day as much as people in bigger cities," he said.

"When you're in a ditch, who's coming to get you? We are."
