RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA-TV) - When you think of a first responder, who comes to mind? Police, firefighters and paramedics usually are at the top of the list, but when a motorist plows through a building or icy winter roads lead drivers into ditches, and when traffic comes to a stand-still, tow crews are on-scene. Vehicle towing is a job critical to traffic safety. Tow operators clear roads of broken-down cars and recover wrecked vehicles involved in accidents. Towing careers also come with responsibilities like any job, but the risks that come with the field often overlap with the dangers some first responders face. Casey Oleson, a …

A 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee involved in a fatal crash on Interstate 90 Tuesday night drove onto the back of a flatbed tow truck before vaulting over the cab and rolling, the South Dakota Highway Patrol says. The driver of the Jeep, a 43-year-old woman, was driving east on Interstate 90 near Brandon when she collided with a tow truck that was trying to pull another car out of the median, Highway Patrol spokesman Tony Mangan said. The woman drove onto the lowered flatbed of the tow truck and the Jeep vaulted over the cab and rolled, throwing the woman from the vehicle, Mangan said. She was not wearing a seatbelt. The woman died at the scene of the crash. Her …

A Sioux Falls tow truck driver had frightening ordeal Tuesday on the interstate. It happened just north of the Dell Rapids exit on Interstate 29 around 10 a.m., when a routine call to pull a truck out of the ditch, turned out to be anything but routine. When the lights are flashing, no one should be dashing; especially when the roads are slippery like they were Tuesday morning. That's the message from Todd Munion, who drives for A Plus Towing, after he was nearly hit by another vehicle while on a service call on Interstate 29. "I just heard tires, a different sound of tires on the road, when I looked up he was doing 360'…

One of the hardest hit areas so far is central South Dakota. KSFY's Michaela Feldmann looked at some of the behind-the-scenes work crews do to prepare ahead of the storm. "They're bad the roads are bad," A second wave of snow is making its way through the Pierre area. "It’s going to be a little harsh on operations they’re going to experience a lot of blowing snow they’re going to experience compacted snow on the roads it’s going to be equally as hard for them as it is for all of us to get around," Pierre Area DOT Engineer Dean Vandewiele said. From the dash cam video/bus driver's view in commercial bus; this video shows a DAYTIME motorist driving up the back of a carrier. There's a semi in the slow lane adding to the equation suggesting the motorist may have been focused on passing the semi at highway speeds. In real-time, the motorist may have moved intentionally to the left so to have plenty of clearance to pass the semi. In a blink of an eye, the motorist was upon the carrier's location traveling at 60-miles per hour. http://www.kdlt.com/2018/01/08/car-vs-tow-truck-situation-stresses-importance-move-law/ Note that from a distance approaching the flatbed carrier's location, there's li…
