The mother of one of the victims in a Lafayette crash that killed two people and seriously injured a third has filed a wrongful death suit against the tow truck driver who authorities say was high on drugs when he veered into oncoming traffic on Route 15. The lawsuit, filed on Sept. 25 in Sussex County Superior Court by the estate of James Ziniewicz of Newton, says Joseph Crilley drove a tow truck "negligently, carelessly and recklessly" the evening of Aug. 5, 2019 when he crashed into Ziniewicz's Honda Civic hatchback. Ziniewicz, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene. Crilley, who lives in Hampton, was arrested 43 days after the crash following the…

Property owners and one towing operator are critical of the new rules. The night of May 6, 2020, Greenville, South Carolina Municipal Judge Mike O’Brien had to leave his family in cool and rainy weather for an hour and a half while he took out $185 in cash and tracked down his van that held two car seats for his young grandchildren. O’Brien, a long-time visitor to North Myrtle Beach who had just bought a condo in Cherry Grove, had taken his family to Snooky’s for his son-in-law’s birthday. At the time, restaurants had just started to open following the governor’s COVID-19 closures. Across the street, the Atlantis Pancake House was still closed.…

North Myrtle Beach passes new tow truck rules despite resident opposition, workshop to come It's hard to say how many cars are towed in North Myrtle Beach. North Myrtle Beach on Monday took to the first step in sending its old towing laws to the junkyard of defunct ordinances in an effort to crack down on predatory towing and ensure the city is aware of all private property tows that occur within the city limits. It was not an easy ride to get there as close to a dozen residents – including a tow truck company owner, homeowners’ association presidents and property managers – spoke against the ordinance. But councilors said they've…

Another tower down scenario is just a few days and is reported with very little details. A tow operator in South Carolina was killed this afternoon when he drifted from highway lanes into a parked Dodge vehicle on the shoulder of SC I-26 eastbound. The tow truck then went into the tree-line, struck a tree and the tow operator was ejected as he was not wearing a seatbelt. This is another (possibly) preventable scenario if the tower was wearing a seatbelt and wasn’t somehow distracted? The news narrative doesn’t mention whether or not a cellphone was an associated factor to the crash, but a newish Peterbilt typically won’t steer its way off the highway into a parked car. Ye…

Tow truck driver highlights "Move Over" law in wake of I-85 accident ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) - Tow truck driver David Hatley points to an American flag with a yellow stripe. He explains that much like law enforcement and firefighters, tow truck drivers have a brotherhood. He said when one driver is hit, it resonates with every driver no matter the company. "You're terrified that you lost a tow brother. That's how he felt after he saw this," Hatley said. "These guys are competition during the day, but we're still a brotherhood." That's why he was upset to see a picture of an accident come out of Anderson County. …
